  1. You should post pics of your Fiance' before we can give you good advice...

  2. This is an interesting discussion. I didn't have the benefit of a "baseops forum" when I decided to join the military, I was naive compared to the rest of you. In any case, I joined to fly for my country. I gave up a very lucrative job at IBM to do it. I didn't look at the retirement plan. I didn't know much about the work week schedule. I didn't really know jack. I DID know there was a multi-year commitment. I found out I'd make about $26000 my first year. Cool For me, it didn't matter. It could have been a 20-year commitment, and I would have signed up. Probably not a "wise" decision for many reasons... but it's the one I made.

  3. The differences mainly stem that I signed on the dotted line as a single guy in college. Now, I'm in my 30s with a family. Things I hadn't considered as positives: - Health care for life in retirement - The retirement cash flow - Vet's benefits for myself, wife, and children Things that I used to not care about, but now matter quite a bit: - How much I'm home - Missed birthdays/holidays - My kids being able/unable to get to know their grandparents ...to name a few. Don't get me wrong: When I was 20, I didn't think that a career in the military would be a cakewalk. Now that I'm watching my daughter grow up (way too fast!) right before my eyes, I think hard about why I do what I do and whether or not it's worth it. It's still worth it, of course. However, it's definitely NOT your normal civilian career. If my pay/benefits were changed to reflect what's "normal" for a civilian career, you bet your ass I'd have to re-evaluate my current plan to give 20+ years of service.

  4. What squadron...doesn't matter. What were their names....doesn't matter. What tail numbers did they not give to the tanker.....doesn't matter. Your need to verify a war story on the internet .....doesn't matter. It probably isn't true. What matters then.....my ice cold Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. That matters.

  5. Your assumption that my friend was a pilot was incorrect. I left out the fact that he was a support guy due to the inevitable spears that would be thrown. You don't know me. Since I was both enlisted and officer support prior to becoming a pilot I have a deep understanding and respect for those functions and the people performing them. I also understand the weaknesses inherent in that culture. Leave is an entitlement authorized by congress. It should be used to keep the military member's personal and professional life in balance. How you use it should be determined by you and your boss within the rules congress and your service have set. If your boss doesn't like your plan, he can always say no, but that's between you and him.

  6. I have UTFSF but haven't been able to pull up an old thread with any good info. I'm seeking some help from fellow Exec types, former Exec types, or casual UPT types that might be able to give a little input. I'm trying to find good/somewhat recent examples of Duty Titles that have been used for junior CGOs who are on casual for an extended period. We have several 2d Lts, 1st Lts, and a couple Capts that have been doing an administrative assistant type role and we also have a couple who have been assigned as the lead casual. I'm curious about what Duty Titles folks have had in the past or know of. Any input is much appreciated.

  8. Strafe was in the first week of Desert Storm. 58 FS (or I suppose TFS in those days). 1st time was against trucks which they actually hit. The pilots did not report it but AWACS reported the event. The second time, in a 24 hour period, same squadron, on a Candid, on the ground. One of the Eagles was almost shot down by an SA-6. The Candid did have a wing knocked off. Next day, ATO stated "F-15 NO STRAFE." Gen Horner apparently was not happy about the whole thing. No, I was not there in that squadron but I just walked down the hall to talk to the guy who was there when it happened. I was busy flying from the LIK where our F-16s were told not to strafe with the gun prior to dropping bombs. F-16 drivers, imagine if you will: roll in, AG called up, go DGFT, strafe while stepping on the rudder to spray 20mm everywhere (and I mean everywhere), then go back to AG and put the pipper on the tgt. The leadership at the LIK was not impressed - directive came out "no more F-16 ground strafe prior to dropping bombs." The guy who started it did it because his old man flying Jugs in WW II, would strafe with the guns while on a bombing pass as it caused the bad guys to duck rather than shooting at him. Whoda ever thought? Does this derail this thread?? Edit: spelling....

  9. When I was at Columbus, my duty title was Assistant Executive Officer; that's what went on my LOE.

  10. There's no documentation of you not being a complete retard. If you weren't dumber than shit, there would clearly be open source confirmation of that fact. Please provide proof with source.

  11. That's a pretty bold statement you know, without actually being able to verify that they are dudes or angry... This seems to be the recurring problem.

  13. IIRC, AMC policy is min charge of 50% to fly with it, then 10% for every hour over a five hour flight. 100% charge required for >10 hours of flight/duty day. Charge the fucking thing before the first flight of each day. Problem solved.

  15. Standard liberal logic. Killing a baby and a terrorist are the same thing. Except killing babies is okay and "murdering" terrorists is not. Also, she called the A-10 a bomber.
