  1. RAB, as an outsider, I think you are mistakenly taking offense to the local vernacular. "Dude" is NOT a term of disrespect and, I can assure you that no one here means any disrespect to your kin, quite the opposite in fact. Go read some of the past threads involving casualties, I doubt you'll find any names in there either, maybe a callsign or two, but that's it. I'm not here to play the blame game, but I can tell you that the Air Force has an unfortunate habit of crucifying people simply due to circumstantial proximity to unfortunate incidents. We're not trying to blame people here, we're trying to support our bros here who are being thrown under the bus. No, I don't have a lot of the facts, but based on extensive experience with this shit, I can certainly tell you that there is an extremely high probability that this court martial is built on bullshit and a sense of self preservation of a lot of "leadership". Furthermore, as tough a pill as it is to swallow, you need to understand that people make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes cost them, or someone else, their life and that's just the business we're in. And if you think Francis was the first guy to take a fall on the DZ.... So, next time you feel the urge to roll in hot on a bunch of dudes who sacrifice more on a daily basis than you probably have in your entire life, slow your roll, ease up off it, try to learn up yourself and understand who is actually on your side. Honestly dude, I am truly sorry for your loss, but understand that there are a ton of Francis' bros out there who got to go home to their kids thanks to the tireless efforts of a lot of the guys on this forum. Respect that. Big ups.

  4. If you are in fact related to the deceased soldier, I am sorry for your loss and for his family. I have read and reread this thread multiple times because something is rotten with this situation. I think leadership is missing the forest for the trees, but I do not have all of the facts either. However, I do not believe any posts have disrespected the deceased, or placed blame on him in any way. Even mentioning this as a possibility is ludicrous and shameful as mentioned above. It seems these days that there always has to be a scapegoat for something that goes wrong in the military. Some deserve the punishment they receive, but others are thrown under the bus so leadership can be seen as taking action.

  5. ^^This hints to the fundamental problem. The common denominator at work across the Air Force is that very few seem willing or capable to pause long enough to consider and understand the (any) problem, big or small, before they take action on it. One of my favorite distillations of 'leadership' can help illustrate what I mean: "General von Moltke divided the entire officer corps into four distinct types, depending on their mental and physical characteristics: 1) mentally dull and physically lazy, 2) mentally bright and physically energetic, 3) mentally dull and physically energetic, and 4) bright and lazy. Type 1: The officers who were both mentally dull and physically lazy were given simple, repetitive, unchallenging tasks. Type 2: The officers who were both mentally bright and physically energetic, Von Moltke felt were obsessed with micromanagement and accordingly would be poor leaders. Therefore, he never promoted this type of officer to the status of commanding officer of the German General Staff. Type 3: The officers who were mentally dull but physically energetic, Von Moltke considered dangerous. To him, they were walking, talking mistake generators that required constant supervision. Because they created messes faster than could be fixed, these officers were too much trouble and were dismissed. Type 4: The mentally bright yet physically lazy officer, our hero, is the type of person Von Moltke felt should ascend to the lofty heights of ultimate command. Why? Because he is smart enough to see what needs to be done but is also motivated by laziness to find the easiest, simplest way to succeed. And, of course, such an officer would never sully his hands with details, vastly preferring to delegate those concerns to the eager beaver types." We have too many type 3 officers in positions of power and influence. I don't know why, but it seems to me that these types are heavily rewarded/regarded in the Air Force:

  6. DTS will send you another debt notice with the revised (or original amount in this case) debt amount. If the amounts are the same you can pay using either notice. The Pay.Gov option seems to be working well for people. You will request the refund from CITI separate from the payment to DTS.

  8. In that case, tradition had all ready been thrown out the window. SQ/CCs have no rank/authority in the bar, especially at a naming. The Mayor is the ultimate and final authority for all bar activities.

  14. We had the airport manager from a podunk airport about 10 miles NW of MXF call the SOF desk one afternoon raising hell because "[we] just flew right over his airport less than 300 feet". Quick thinking Captain who answered the phone..."Really, when?...Less than five minutes ago?....Good." Airport Mgr:..."what do you mean, 'Good'?" Capt: "Well sir, we don't have a single airplane in the air right now." Airport Mgr: "Well who was it then?" Capt: "I have no idea." click

  15. This might be old news to some but it was new to me so I thought I would share. I'm separating in a few weeks and had my JPPSO appointment last week to plan my final PCS. I entered active duty in Atlanta but I am moving to Connecticut for my final move so I assumed I would be paying money out of pocket for the extra distance. However the payment is calculated differently than I realized. First they calculate your Max Government Obligation, which is based on the total amount you are allowed to move for your rank. So in my case as a Capt with dependents I'm allowed 14,500 lbs to move to Atlanta and that is the MGO. In reality I'm going to be moving around 6,000 lbs to Connecticut. I assumed that they would calculate the cost for moving my 6,000 lbs to Atlanta then I would have to pay the difference for moving further. Since they use the MGO not my actual weight that means that since moving 6,000 lbs to Connecticut is less expensive than moving 14,500 lbs to Atlanta I actually won't have to pay anything. That was pretty good news for me. Just thought I would add the info to this thread in case others were under the same impression I was.

  16. Separating in Lieu of Court Martial is not considered a felony conviction, but it is basically the same discharge rate considering it is a dismissal. If Jared wants to call me, I'll be up for a few more hours. I am OCONUS tomorrow and cannot be reached after that. He needs to hire a civilian lawyer. His ADC, no matter how good she is, cannot give him a fair shake against the government. Tell him to PM me, and I'll give him my phone number to tell him why.
