  1. It was inevitable, the same thing happened to the Nazis when they brought back Hawaiian shirt day...

  2. Which is why I advocate getting rid of the ability to pursue AAD at a certain rank. What can/can't be seen on a SURF/DQHB can change in the blink of an eye.

  3. Our average Longbow built in 03 or 04 already has 7,000 hours on them. That is a lot for a RW. Watching the budget lines being drawn (we are losing 2-4 Aviation BDEs), I don't think we have the money for it. This falls into the good idea fairy category with little to no possibility of fruition. Most probable COA is the AF just retires the aircraft and nobody gets it

  4. The fact that my family that works law enforcement in Maryland has basically told me that the inner harbor isn't really safe anymore is telling.. There used to be places (well a few) that were cool, and some places that were on the up turn. I'm thinking that it sounds like the whole place is about to get nasty, kinda like an insurgency the outcome of that outburst of violence will determine whether Baltimore takes a dive into Detroit land or ends up looking good. A shame, I really like Fell's Point and Federal Hill.

  5. There’s something to be said for high capacity magazines... A guy walked into a crowded bar waving his 1911 Colt .45 ACP pistol with an 8 round magazine and yelled, "Who in here hasbeen screwing my wife?" A voice from the back of the bar yelled back, "You’ll need more ammo."

  6. While you're right I really hope it does happen, because witnessing the cluster of epic proportions that results from having the Army manage their own fixed wing CAS will put this stupid idea to death once and for all.

  7. Avoid the H. Active duty is trying to divest itself of them as quickly as possible. Options then are J school if there is a spot (pipeline is pretty much at max production), UAS (there is still a need for bodies), or some other aircraft. I've heard of everything from C-17 to AFSOC to MC-12. Luck and timing, and a push from your boss that will probably barely know you helps. As for deployments, I can only accurately speak for the Js. Units are doing six month deployments and then not deploying until it's their "turn" again. This is obviously going to be subject to change as A) more units convert to J and B) the drawdown proceeds in OEF. You will almost certainly go to another C-130 ops assignment as a J guy. Hope that helps.

  8. Historical note for the younger dudes who don't remember the last time this happened: A whole bunch of Captains followed the CSAF's advice that they should focus on their jobs and families rather than getting a Masters....and then a couple years later, Jumper retired and and Mosley (the next CSAF) promptly reinstated the requirement to have a Masters for Lt Col (and unofficially did so for Major again). Sometimes you have to be careful which CSAF vectors you choose to follow.

  13. Once again the idea of passing the A-10 to the Army is making its appearance. Interesting review of the history of USAF-US Army agreements on fixed wing support aviation (Key West Agreement) and the claim that the USAf never wanted the warthog in the first place. I think the first time I heard this topic raised was in 92, after the Desert Storm when the concept was floated in QDR. I guess the increased cost of the F-35 makes keeping the A-10 difficult to justify. The question would be, does the Army really want it, and if so can they maintain it. I assume since WOs successfully fly and employ highly complex aircraft such as the AH-64, the MH-60 and the MH-47, they would probably have the ability to fly the A-10 effectively. Not so sure about their ability to maintain multiple squadrons (battalions) of ejection seat equipped fighter and their associated weaponry and targeting systems... Could be fun though... https://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2014/01/22/save_the_a-10__give_it_to_the_army_107047.html

  14. I was not clear on that post. By beloved WWII nose art, I meant that nose art means a lot to me. I wasn't being a smart ass. I think it is a shame that we are removing nose art from our culture. My grandfather flew B-17s in the Bloody 100th and I own nose art. I did not like directing the removal of "Camera Shy" at our wing, but I did it and moved on. It is now not appropriate. It was at the time, but now it is not. We should preserve it in our museums and as a proud part of our heritage, but not as a part of our current culture. Specifically, the nose art that was acceptable in WWII is not acceptable on our aircraft today. Or on posters in our workplaces. I think it is unfortunate. I absolutely do not feel the same regret when it comes to stupid ass word games, sexually offensive traditions or most of the bullshit that was taken off the walls during the "purge". None. That doesn't mean it isn't the right thing to do. Do you think the Sweet Lemonade video at Balad contributed to the hostile work environment and sexual harassment experienced by TSgt Smith? How about the Doofer books and Fighter Pilot Song book she got from the vault? Do you agree with the findings in the CDI and IG report? Many of her allegations were unsubstantiated due to lack of evidence. Most of the substantiated allegations were for a failure of leadership. Were those commanders wrongly judged due to civilian pressures?
