The missile world has, historically, had a strong tendency to discourage questioning of the status quo. Someone questions whether we really need to do things a certain way, and they get told some variation of "it's that way because it's always been that way" or "stop complaining and suck it up, you're in the military" and now they've got a reputation for being a troublemaker. Point in case: a few years ago at the club, someone raised a concern to a local commander about a certain new policy that had been implemented, that was widely seen as unnecessary and cumbersome to the crewforce. Rather than address the concern, his response to this was to ask everyone at the table how long they'd been in the Air Force, then told all of us that he had more time in the AF than all of us combined and that he thought it was a good idea, so deal with it. And, over time, the people who have bought into the status quo get promoted, get command, and perpetuate the cycle, and the people who questioned it get disillusioned and get out. (There's exceptions, but that is largely the way it goes.) As a result, we have numerous leaders that don't listen to or address our concerns, but instead tell us to shut up and color and report up the chain that everything is fine. So if I were LtGen Wilson and I really wanted to know what was going on with the ICBM crewforce... I'd be bypassing the chain too, because nobody's going to say anything honest if they think there's any chance their commander will find out they said anything negative to a higher-up. It's going to be interesting to see what people end up saying when the fear of retribution is removed. When the CSAF/SECAF were making the rounds a couple weeks ago, they met with the junior CGOs separately from our leadership - and from what I've heard, the junior CGOs gave them some very candid opinions about certain commanders and the cultures they promulgated.

Sorry for the thread revival but I got "Chiefed" by a young female 2Lt about 3 hrs ago. My back was turned and I heard "Airman.......Airman" and I didn't bother looking since it's been about 12 yrs since having that directed at me. When I did turn she then corrected me on the wear of my Flight Cap. She seems to read the reg that it has to be straight all the way down, when in all reality it says straight with the nose. And then she stood there waiting for a salute, so I move the all the things I was carrying to one hand and render a salute. This sort of thing hasn't happened to me in years, it just took me by surprise. Might be time to go. Too bad TERA wasn't offered to MSgt booms.

I find it interesting that we have an entire thread dedicated to how ed up the Air Force is, but when an outsider lobs some spears at us, everyone rushes to defend the organization. To be perfectly honest, I trust Gates' assessment of things more than any leader I know in the Air Force and I share his distrust of the service. Maybe he has a personal grudge, or maybe he spent just enough time in the service to know how myopic, inbred, and close minded we really are. I was happy to see Moseley go, but not so happy to see Stephen Hawking's long lost brother take the reins (honestly I expected him to be a little smarter). However, I think we're missing the forest for the trees here. The problems in the Air Force do not stem from our preoccupation with F22s or our reluctance to embrace UAVs, they come from our unconscionably pathetic ability to produce real leaders of substance, intelligence, and vision. Or, alternatively, maybe our problems are forced upon us by a system that is hopelessly corrupt and self serving and beyond the influence of any single man. Just finished "Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years of Lockheed" by Ben Rich and Leo Janos. Absolutely incredible book that gives an extremely in-depth look at the years of blood, sweat, & tears it took to get our most secretive aircraft off the ground. Rich talks a lot about the extraordinary technological breakthroughs they made during the Cold War and how he couldn't go home and tell his wife about them. He also gives great insight into the AF Acquisition process, specifically some of the problems associated with limited budgets, extensive oversight, Pentagon bureaucracy, and maintaining a cloak and dagger over such massive top secret projects like the SR-71 and the F-117. This. We had similar problems with getting not terrible beer and the club. We were required to use the club and required to purchase a minimum amount of crap (I think some food and a keg or two.) Our class just decided to min run the club festivities and give them as little money as we could and have a get-together after with everything we wanted. If you attempt to just show up with your own kegs and play the Lt card, it's been my experience that they will take your kegs. They'll feed some line about how you can get them later after the party and never give them back.
