https://www.jqpublic-blog.com/another-commander-sacked-air-force-unrecognized-ethical-tailspin/ "In February of this year, the commander of the 19th Airlift Wing relieved Lt. Col. Blair Kaiser of command of the 30th Airlift Squadron, an active duty C-130 unit embedded within the Wyoming Air National Guard. The news came as an absolute shock to Kaiser and his 200+ airmen. He’d just returned from commanding a deployed squadron in Afghanistan, a job he’d done with great distinction despite having been dispatched on short notice almost immediately after being given command of the 30th." Looks like there may be another case reminiscent of Lt. Col. Perry.2 points

It could be worse... at least I'm tall enough to ride the six-flags rides. Here are my favorite nav jokes: "Never trust a WSO who doesn't wear glasses" "What's the difference between a gay guy and a nav? The gay guy has a future in the Air Force" "What do you call a nav who has been retired for five years? A GS-12." "Why do we give leather jackets to navs? To better contain the smell."2 points

Ok. Here's the skinny fellas.... I. The contentions of working as a commuting TR are highly dependent on the unit. The units will establish their willingness to pay for the reimbursement of legal traveling and lodging costs for their non-local members depending on how difficult it is for said unit to staff their place. Units in shithole locations, or alternatively units with airframes that are not cool (i.e. not fighters and whatever else shit) will tend to exhibit greater willingness to endure the cost of traveling TRs and the paid travel gravy train. Those units that do not have such need, will likely not play that game and thus resort to the more typical commuting restrictions fighter units have been known for since forever. Figure out what type of unit you work for. The intent of the ARC was based on hometown unit models; the reality of Congressional pork belly has been an effective subversion of that intent and as such the hometown outcome is not universally true. Thence the reality of traveling cost for TRs in shitty locale/shitty airplane units. II. Some units originally affected by the 2005 BRAC and other force restructurings that led the iron dislocated from their current/qualified members, have been allowed to reimburse commuting TRs for travel to perform IDT status, which in normal units is NOT a reimbursable expense to the member. Lodging cost reimbursement in the form of unit direct billing however, IS an entitlement for non-local TRs while performing IDT duty in all units, not just units approved for "IDT travel" reimbursement. Paragraph I caveats apply to whether or not you find yourself employed by either type of unit. At any rate, the IDT travel reimbursement is 12 vouchers a year, up to 300 dollar actual cash value last time I checked, all receipts must be included (i.e. you can't get away with not submitting receipts under 75 bucks when it comes to an IDT travel reimbursement voucher). III. GTFO with that bullshit about traveling to work for free on RPA/MPA or AT status God damn it. Lodging only weekends while on a "1" status, living like god damn riddle kids out of a crash pad a la regional airlines because the unit promised you mandays if you play good house------a'. Mother blue loves that. Whoring out your skillset because you love wearing that bag. Rule#1 of the Reserves: you don't show up to work when not in status. Rule #1a: you certainly, DO NOT, travel for free when you're entitled to travel reimbursement, as some sort of a precondition of being given work. Travel entitlements and lodging are the price of freedom and when you give it up to play soldier for free the rest of the bros take it in the checkbook. We don't want to go back to the Country Club days of the Guard/Res; stop that shit. Your unit must have given you the spiel before they decided to hire you. If the place is located in a shithole and people can't make a lucrative living close by, then that's the price they got to pay to get you to work. Otherwise you buck up and move to the location and pursue your duty without the traveling reimbursement or per diem entitlement that's absent to a local area guy. But you do not wipe your ass with the JTFR and set an erosive precedent at the expense of your brothers. I'm a middle-of-the-road guy by age/rank but an old timer by Reserve longevity and nothing fires me up more than some of the folks within the current crop of AD separatees, anxious as hell to get out of AD but then turn around and turn the Reserves into a low-tier regional airline operation with their work-for-free shenanigans. If you actually want to make it to your 20 year letter you should have a vested interest in internalizing what I'm saying. Y'all want to keep the Reserves a place that's reasonable to not only work in, but to get to. Some new hires are coming in with the touch n go mentality of "ill just do this to finish out my loose ends then I'm outta here" and it's screwing up the place for everybody. Don't be that guy. Be honest with the unit, have a plan, and do not forego your travel entitlements if the unit agrees to hire you as an outside-commuting area guy. Hold the line god damn it, I feel like a teamster rep drawing it in crayons for some of you guys. Congratulations to all those parolees and welcome to the ARC, where flying, getting paid and not upsetting your civilian employer is our priority...well, at least that is my commitment to my TRs, as one who has BTDT myself. Good luck to all of you making the transition.2 points

Cincinnati guy here. -Roughly between Dayton and Cincinnati (~45 minutes away?) is Red Stewart Airfield. It's a mom and pop grass strip, where the training fleet is two Cubs, a Champ, a Taylorcraft, Decathlon, and a Stearman. Check it out, it's a great little place. Go get some tailwheel time. If you're there from August 30-31st, their airshow/fly-in/pancake breakfast is going on. As long as VFR wx prevails, they'll have a nice turnout. -Cincinnati proper is 1 hour south. Reds baseball games are very reasonably priced. On the Cincinnati side, eat/drink at the Moerlein Lager House or Yardhouse. You can walk across the bridge into northern Kentucky. There is a legit Hofbrauhaus there, along with other bars and entertainment. OTR (Over The Rhine) is the up and coming renovated part of downtown, but beware, hipsters abound, and it's still somewhat shady. Nearby downtown, check out: Eli's BBQ (it's BYOB, and great food), the Wurst Bar, or Brew River Gastropub (great beer selection, they brew some of their own), and of course, Cincinnati Skyline Chili (which you can get in Dayton).1 point

Cannon isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but it is pretty miserable. The only halfway decent thing about it is the people. You have to drive at least a couple hours to eat or do anything decent. I would take pretty much any base in the States other than Minot over Cannon.1 point

My view is that lying through your teeth and being a faker F-tard should remain a protected form of expression. Now that doesn't mean it shouldn't be called out and that the bastards shouldn't be "Martinized" ...just that it should be free of criminal penalty.1 point

I knew this would happen when I saw an influx of Mormon officers joining the ranks 15 year ago. They are all policy makers now! (just joking Mormons) Seriously? WTF is this AF coming to?! Are the WG/CCs really still wondering why the clubs are failing? Back when they were happening places, clubs were making the majority of their revenue on alcohol....period. Take that away, and don't be at all surprised that the clubs are going broke. Doesn't matter how many memberships you get...if you dry up the club, you can kiss the clubs goodbye. I remember a time when the overseas clubs (Spanghalem/Ramstein) were happening places. GoGo dancers. Shit, even when I was young LT at Vance, they were still letting the girls from downtown on base to partake in the club festivities. (I know, that isn't saying much, but as a single LT...booty is booty). Not only is this not my Dad's Air Force anymore...it is looking like it is not my AF anymore. Time to take my drinking problems somewhere else. Times a'changin fellas! Good luck everyone else...we're all counting on you!1 point

Im from Dayton so I can try and help with the fun part. Kinda depends on what your scene is but there are really only two good locations to go out on a Friday in the area. 1. The Oregon district - This is in downtown Dayton about 25 minutes from the base when you factor in the time to get on 35 and head into the city. Mostly the combination of drunk college girls and guys from UD and hipsters from who cares because they are hipsters... Lot of bars down there ranging from the Dublin Pub which is a little expensive for an Irish bar to little hole in the wall dive bars. 2. The Greene - This is a new (last 5 years) upscale bar and shopping area off of I-675 in Beavercreek. Takes about 20 minutes from the base to get there. Lots of more higher end (IE higher prices) stores, upscale theme bars (The Pub, Bar Louis, Adobe Gilas), a really good theatre that serves booze, and a lot of nicer restaurants as well as a comedy club that gets major headliners sometimes. Other than that the only fun thing to do in Dayton is pack a bag and go the hell somewhere else.1 point

Schriever is 9 miles from Peterson, doesn't have a commissary or BX, no restaurants, and you have to drive to Peterson for pretty much everything. Schriever is 11, Pete is 28. That makes sense.1 point
