But does it automatically shut down the motor in-flight? My guess is that requires pilot input. Wouldn't the pilot want to be the final arbiter over whether to shut down the radar? What if he's in the middle of an engagement when it starts to degrade? He may still be getting *some* capability from it.1 point

In this day and age of aviation technology which the F-35 allegedly belongs to, you would think that the radar would be able to sort itself out. For example, during engine start, if a motor on the 787 encounters a problem, it will stop the start, motor the engine, and reattempt start 3 times all by itself before it gives up. You would think an electronic glitch on the radar would easily trip a function to reboot the system itself.1 point

I ended up doing mine with Cobra Kai. Nothing but positive things to say about their whole program. IPs are all retired fast jet guys, German, Italian, and Danish - all very experienced instructors that know how to teach and have the experience to get you ready, or to tell you if you need more time before busting a check ride. They have 2 Barons available for training, but we only flew one because it never broke. I met both examiners that they like to use, and both were really nice guys. The guy that I checked with was very big picture. We had to deal with some pretty shitty weather all week, and these guys flexed to get us all done, successfully. Even with dealing with weather and modifying profiles to make it work, I walked away from my checkride feeling like I was over prepared (which I view as a good thing!) All in all, it was a legit training program with a legit checkride at the end, and you will be prepped for success. Highly recommended!1 point

So, how does this check against the AMC is burning out crews, being gone too much and reduce crew requirements argument? Not trying to ruin anyone's good time, Lord knows we all need it. QUALS - I play a lot of Battlefield 4 and there's jets in that.1 point

59 years ago today, the prototype for the mighty -135 flew its first transcon test. Check out the 10th picture for ol' Tex Johnston's briefing style...!1 point

It doesn't matter what you flew in UPT, because you were never officially qual'ed in that aircraft (no form 8). So AFPC views PIT as an initial qual, which means you pick up the full 3 years. As far as block 16, read a little closer - it says "...(no) break in flying between AETC non-MWS aircraft..." The way I (and other personnel it's I've talked to) read this is if you switch trainer airframes within AETC (i.e., switch from t-38 to t-6 for a command opportunity, etc) then you don't pick up a 3 year adsc, even if it is an initial qual. There still is the problem with notes 1b and 1c being contradictory (my situation, posted earlier), but basically, if you are getting an initial qual (i.e. Your form 8 says "INIT" on it) you will pick up a 3 year adsc, even if that takes you past your 10 year UPT commitment. I don't agree with it, but when I tried to fight it, I lost. YMMV.1 point

I don't get it. Are you saying I lack sufficient motivation to assist in needless foreign rabble rousing while being stationed in low income, low population areas where I'm not able to fully enjoy my 20s, 30's and half of my 40's? I guess you're right. However, pay me more and promise me $45-50k for the rest of my life (to do nothing) and I'm willing to 'make the sacrifice'. No world wars going on right now that require a Patton or a Mitchell. Just bullshit conflicts that we instigate, just because... Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk1 point

I went over there as a non vol staff weenie. The orders were a gift on my 18 year, 360th day in the AF (no shit). Pretty much every prior E gets hit with these so I knew it was coming. I let it roll, because I wanted to roll the dice vs not having to serve a sentence at the 'Deid. I flew quite a bit as a "guardian angel" which means that while the IPs are trying to teach the Afghans to fly airplanes, you sit in back, ready to cap one that gets out of hand. I'm a 39 year old dude, and not made to run around with full body armor on every day, yet that's what I did. Even as a staff weenie, I still had an Afghan counterpart that I was trying to "mentor". As far as the flying goes, the Afghans are pretty terrible at it as a general rule. If you have never had the opportunity to teach a C-130 "AC" that he needs to keep one wing low when landing in a cross wind, this is your opportunity. Everything you do is dangerous. I raised my rifle with intent to shoot over two occasions in the one year I was there. I didn't end up pulling the trigger for different reasons each time, but the threat was still there. Had a truck bomb go off right outside the base gate one morning. If I had not been lazy, I would have been right by it on my morning run. Two of my former office mates were killed two weeks ago when their helo Caught a mooring cable from an aerostat on a routine visit to headquarters. Getting out of there in tact both physically and mentally is about luck, not skill. The mission is pretty hopeless, and you will come home disgruntled at both the Air Force and the 16 years of terrible foreign policy our country as a whole has had. Oh, add on to your 365 two months at lovely McGuire AFB under GO 1 for Air Advisor training, where you will receive a code on your SURF saying that you can do that and are highly susceptible to having to do it again. Overall, I'd take the Deid any day over that place. I promise I will write more coherently when I have not been drinking. Please feel free to fire away with further questions. That job + all the extraneous factors going on in the AF I joined 20 years ago made me push the button for retirement. I'm done. They took away any love I might have had left for our service. Sorry I can't speak more to the guard/reserve aspect, but I might be able to come up with what I remember when I have not been going shot for shot with my wife for every kid at our door who is that bitch from Frozen.1 point

When I was a captain I despised the thought of being an exec. When I was a major I politely declined the wing exec job when it was offered to me. Now that I'm a lieutenant colonel I hope that I can mentor the captains in my sphere of influence well enough without the understanding that I might have gained from that exec job. My job is no longer to be the best operator in the unit. I can damn sure hold my own but my time is better invested in developing the next set of leaders. It pains me to say this because the only thing that really matters is how you execute when the mission gets tough, but looking back on it I think spending 1 year out of 17 as the exec might have been worth it.1 point

So the AF pulled a bunch of bullshit on Vetter (and on a lot of other dudes), he decided it was best for him to get out vs. eat the "Capt until 20" shit sandwich and somehow he's putting himself ahead of others? I don't know Vetter personally, but I do know several good dudes in the same situation he was in - none of them were shitbags or bad officers, they simply got thrown to the side by an AF who doesn't give a shit about anyone. Let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks those who get out pre-20+ are selfish, screwing others, don't understand the meaning of service, etc. We certainly need good dudes to stay and be good leadership in the future, but those who do not want to take that path are not bad officers or putting themselves above others. They did their time and gave a shitload more than 99% of this country - good on them, they deserve a "thanks" at minimum, not this bullshit.1 point

Dood, you got passed over for Major? That must have been an epic party! That said, you can poo poo the WIC PRF stuff all you want. It's actually difficult to compete when you're in the 57th wing. Not so much just making major, but schools and O-5 is a different animal when you're surrounded by weapons officers and the thunder birds.1 point
