So, I was off this past Saturday. Scheduling called me to ask if I could help them out with a DFW turn. I didn't have anything to do, so I took the trip. I made $2k to fly 6 hours...on top of my Reserve guarantee for the month. Plus, they gave me two more days off later this month. To those who decide to stay in...you are being underpaid for your services.6 points

They scoff as a function of their own dissonance; confirmation bias. Vetter's post contained all of the essential elements: -Choice of whether or not he would help--no obligation to be a "Yes Man" -He chooses to live in base, substantially improving his QoL -He may choose to bid another base when he becomes more senior -He then may choose to relocate, or commute if if that is more advantageous -He was immediately rewarded for helping out -He may at some point trade some QoL for an earlier upgrade; seat, iron, or both -OR, he may get kicked to the curb at the next market correction or merger. Who the fvck knows Based on his posting history, he (like a lot of us) might trade a sizable chunk of the above for more time in a USAF tail, but not at the expense of being marginalized and commoditized on some spreadsheet2 points

This is the form you will need to complete if you've had PRK or LASIK......https://www.wpafb.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-150310-028.pdf Most people will complete their flight physical 6-12 months before they expect to start UPT training. Note that the wait time from surgery to consideration for a physical is 6 months, not one year. You will want to get copies of your pre-LASIK/PRK exam, a copy of the surgical report and any post-op exams that include a refraction. The waiver will occur when you have your physical and will be handled by the optometrists and flight docs. You don't have to do anything other than get the documents I described. I'm not clear on your current status. If you are on orders, there is an application process even if you are going to a civilian doctor. If you are a traditional reservist, you do everything on your own. Let me know if you have further questions.1 point

I definitely agree about the self-righteous attitude that has become much more common lately. I hope he was fired for something like what you described; given the normal standard of (any) media outlet today it's probably somewhere in between. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

All this talk about the bonus and why we serve and here I've been sitting in a waiting room for the past hour to get my wife a new ID card. Would 1,000 extra a month cure this? Would 5,000? I've been in 10 years and it always gets more painful. If I hear "my system is down" or "they just updated our system and lost all your information" again I'm going to go nuts. "Let's just give the pilots more money, that'll do the trick." One word, WRONG!1 point

In the Hawg community we had a low altitude step down training program that eventually got you to operating at 100 feet. Academics included items like task management priorities and visual cues. Biggest things I remember was the "Time to Die" charts, i.e. if you are at X feet with Y bank rate less than Z G's, your sink rate will kill you in 6.9 seconds. The other was "If you are turning and not heads up looking where you are going, you will die via ground impact." After the academics, we did several flights using those techniques to get the qual. So, the information is out there already in briefing form..somewhere.1 point

Not sure about what you're looking at specifically, but when it says MAJCOM I believe it's referring to the promotion rate for that MAJCOM. For example, a P in AFSOC got you what was really a 22% promotion rate (or close to it). Other MAJCOMs do better. Some worse. AFSOC doesn't take care of people and if you are new to the command and not an AFSOC baby you are f'd.1 point

Chang isn't a leader. He's a nobody and he knows it. He doesn't have any "spreadsheets". That said, got to give him props- he's trolling you guys hard, and you guys are taking the bait every time.1 point

Chang, I did my 69 page masters thesis 5 yrs ago on how to retain RPA pilots. I surveyed about 50 of them. Your data and mine seem to conflict. Listen Chang, I've never flown an RPA, I love my AF/country, you name it. I would have stayed in without a bonus so listen to someone who is not your bitter dissenter. I've had buddies go to RPA's who were some of the most upbeat, positive dudes I ever met. They took the assignment and I remember their fini flights...none were USAF RPA haters. One guy was excited. 5 yrs later, 100% of them are out. The stories they told me of shift work, denied career opportunities, horrid family life etc. made me appreciate my 179. Chang, I urge you and other leaders to get in touch with the "actual" pulse of the USAF. There is a huge disconnect somewhere with what you are seeing vs the reality of things. Despite your assumption, this forum is a pretty good cross section of what I hear in sq bars across airframes and the USAF from all ranks and backgrounds (no this is not just a pilot problem).1 point

Smokin, Agree. However, in the Airshow scenario, the rules in the US are written to really minimize this possibility. Putting a jet into the crowd at an Airshow in the US is unlikely. The last US Airshow spectator fatality was 1954. Before someone corrects me, the Reno Race accident was not an Airshow. Night and day.1 point

Know a few guys who bailed at 18 yrs - they're doing great and enjoying life. Money isn't everything, job/life satisfaction matters a lot more to many of us.1 point

Do the math, di1630: Take the number of throttles in your cockpit, Multiply that by the number of ejection seats. Then take THAT number and multiply it by the number of vertical stabs. If your final product is anything greater than one, you play the skin flute.1 point

Easy there. How about you put away the "jump to conclusions mat"? The facts are: the airplane stopped working, Tuna got out safely, noone on the ground was hurt, said airplane crashed in a field. All else is just hearsay right now and you should know better.1 point

As someone who has designed the aerobatic box for airshows, I'd like to see how they set this up over a stadium. My friend in attendance said they did not do the Bomb Burst. I guessing that the combo of mountains and other LimFacs makes it not feasible. Another friend said the show was delayed due to POTUS but looked great I'm also curious to know if TBird1 gets a phone call from someone with 4-stars about having a performance with POTUS in the crowd. I'm guessing there is some additional external pressure in this scenario, even for a demo team. I cannot remember how long the team was down after the 2003 Mountain Home crash, but I hope there is a Block 52 somewhere getting red, white, and blue paint, and a smoke system installed so they can get back to what they do best.1 point

You mean the comments from the masses on "Russia today" aren't overwhelmingly sympathetic and pro-us? shocking.1 point
