  1. Valid point points...however. There is no denying decisions at the very top, particularly strategic ones are often a choice between two uncomfortable paths. I liken it to decisions made by senior generals in wartime who know men will be lost in combat and find a way to disconnect from reality as they make choices that will most certainly send men to their death in an effort to save a country or a way of life. What gets me is the double-speak, the slight of hand, the outright lies as he says one thing to your face then goes behind your back to advocate a lower hours requirement with Congress. Be a fucking LEADER, stand up and tell the truth to your men and women...Ive done what I can within my power and I am left with no other choice to save the service. I know Goldfein, Rand, and many of the others and I don't simply understand why they surrendered their integrity.

  3. Approved. 11F, 6 months off (UPT is my furthest out ADSC). I had a hiring letter, but no mention of position number, so I think the letter of intent to hire is really what matters (though I'm sure a position number doesn't hurt). Mine also sat at SAF for 7 weeks, but only took about 2 weeks from SQ/CC through AFPC to get their parts done. I learned this week SAF/PC conducts boards every so often for PC apps. So, how long your app sits at SAF is dependent on when it arrives there (right after a board just concluded vs. a week prior to a board). That explains why some people had theirs at SAF for 3 weeks and others had it there for 7 weeks.

  4. Hell or High Water is really good. Great storyline and acting, and a really accurate look at the hardships of life in rural West Texas. Good action sequences as well, without sacrificing realism or the storyline. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network Forums

  5. Recommend approval at all levels. Things that may have helped, just my guess: 1. Letter of intent to hire into a full time job (the AF isn't losing me to the airlines, I'm just swapping component). FWIW, this was a 2-liner basic MFR, no position number. 2. In my personal statement I talked about how I'm going to a TFI unit and will still directly impact AD fighter pilots, as well as explained how my current squadron will not experience any net loss (my replacement is already here, he's just waiting for me to leave to take my position) 3. Asking for 6 months probably increases pk over asking for more, at least for 11F. But maybe this is now a moot point with the new "counter offer" policy.

  6. I completely disagree, in fact it shows a lack of leadership and courage if he didn't have the will to push back to "someone on high." Instead he's made it clear to ALL his people that he doesn't trust them to be responsible. Not something that subordinates respect or make them want to follow.

  7. I don't see what difference it really makes. I've always preferred going off base to drink. and they can't stop that. even if you want to have a promotion celebration. just have the official ceremony on base and cut chalk and take the real celebration somewhere else.

  8. Depressing but likely a reason that could get them to the party (around 14 years late depending on your opinion of when we should have realized we were running a marathon and not a sprint). It's going to take a public brow beating ala the SECDEF Gates chiding the services and specifically the AF that spurred Project Liberty and got an FMV surge. Not judging the efficacy of that project but I cite it as an example of an event that shocked the AF into action. If a SECDEF, Senator or other serious politician publicly humiliated the AF or threatened to send the mission to the Army, that might spur action. Just buy one AF... if we can not figure out how to buy a light turboprop or jet, crew it appropriately and not crash the AF then we might as well hang it up and head to the house.

  9. I gotta say, very cool of the Colonel to give his approval for civilian family members permission to drink alcohol (responsibly). Didn't know they needed his permission, but what a nice gesture.

  16. A close second of movies I am anxiously awaiting this year... I am just not sure if they'll do this one right or not. For one, Ryan Gosling. Two, no Ridley Scott. Third, I am sure the special effects will be CGI, something the original avoided to its credit. Fourth, no Vangelis (although Jóhann Jóhannsson has done some decent scores, I doubt he'll get anywhere close to equaling Vangelis. I still listen to the original Blade Runner soundtrack!). Still, I hold out hope out hope that this sequel is worthy of the original!

  19. Finally, a practical use of baseops. A year ago, my wife and I found what we thought could be our forever home. We took the many recommendations from here on NBKC and although the guy listed here had moved up in the bank, he sent us to Jackie R. who did a great job. However, the very elderly sellers refused to even consider the offer because it was a VA loan. Not to mention they were pretty proud of their offering and set a very unrealistic, uncompetitive price on it. A collective WTF? from us and NBKC, but ok, if the color of our money is good enough, best of luck selling elsewhere. Fast forward 11 months and the house is still on the market. Funny how a year of nothing can change minds. The couple accepted our offer with no dickering. We closed this past Monday. Most painless closing I have ever experienced. So, a well done/bravo zulu/sierra hotel to NBKC and Jackie R. Texas hill country, here we come!

  26. I wore the issued Aramid socks (the thick, off white ones) with silk liners for winter. I had a full set of silk liners so I wore them all... Of course I owned them prior to, I wouldn't have bought them just for that. I wouldn't go buy anything- except MAYBE a Camleback- and even then, find the cheapest, no frills model so it will fit under your ALICE pack. A lot of people say headlamps, but pop on your BDU cap and see if your little issued maglight will fit in there with your enormous mellon- if it does that will work just as well. Having said that, a lamp is only like $5, not exactly breaking the bank. They will give you knives, matches, rabbits, tent makin stuff, MREs, etc... I wouldn't buy anything crazy, and even though there are lots of things you COULD take, remember you'll be humping it all out and back and REPACKING it every morning. Takes time if you've got a lot of crap. On flight suits. I wore BDUs in the field and a FS to prison. Many people did just fine with a FS the whole time, but I'm glad I didn't for one reason. Every camp site had a SH*Thole. Not a privy or crapper or anything else, just a hole in the ground full of sh:t (one exception was filled just shy of overflowing with a 50/50 mix of water and sh:t). I liked being able to remove my top and only have to worry about keeping my balance over the hole, not wheather or not I was dragging my sleeves... Hope this helps.
