  1. Sad situation when filling a DS position is even on the radar. At the Wings I served in, that didn't exist until just a few years ago. But now there's so much queep that Wing CCs feel the need to shack an otherwise mission-flying O-4/5 as the queep master for the Wing. UFB.

  2. Don't worry, they are. Until very recently, the high-time guy in my squadron in terms of C-17 hours was a first assignment Captain (ahead of both the CC and DO). We just don't have any gray beards anymore, and it's stunning how fast that's changed. I've only been doing this for four years, but when I got to my first squadron, we had a Lt Col chief pilot in the squadron whose career had consisted of five consecutive C-17 tours. He knew everything, or it at least seemed that way to a new Lt, and he spent virtually all his time flying locals with the new kids to get them smart. That doesn't really exist anymore. If we exclude attached dudes and guys up at the Group/Wing, I think the squadron currently has one assigned Major and zero assigned Lt Cols who aren't the CC or DO. There's just no one left.

  3. Basically it is a bullshit position created solely for the purpose of managing the extraordinary mountains of queep that are now required to be generated on a daily basis.

  4. Don't sweat it man. There's no intent for you to show up to UPT "up to speed." Just don't be the guy that shows up and says "well during my PPL flying we did it this way"...that is where you'll get in trouble. There are differences in military and civilian procedures, but aerodynamics don't change. Take the limited stick and rudder experience you have and build on it. The procedural differences will be easy to transition, especially because you've only got 50-60 hours of flying Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network Forums

  5. You mean attempting to convince guys to ignore the jackpot of luck and timing to forego an airline seniority number while simultaneously drawing military retirement pension and stay AD AF instead? Good luck with that.

  9. Probably the wrong forum (there's one specifically for Guard/Reserve stuff), but yeah, you probably stand a very good chance if you score decently on the AFOQT and TBAS, aren't a tool, and have decent records from your enlisted time. You are closing in on the age when some units will not want to hire you. 30 is the magic birthday at which you must have started UPT, unless you receive a waiver. The process to get to UPT is long enough that many units will require you to be no older than 28.5 to apply/interview, so you've got a limited window to find a unit, or go unsponsored Reserves. That said, if you're not picky about airframes or locations you can probably find a heavy unit that will take you quickly, and/or give you a waiver if you need it.

  10. Volunteer to be a road guard on squadron runs it gets you out of the pack which lets you stretch out a bit and set your stride. In the middle of the pack you cant see pot holes coming up in front of you in the dark when most of the runs happened and if you have uncoordinated people around you they start stepping on your feet especially once everyone is fatigued. If you do road guard avoid the temptation to cut across corners as there are holes in the fields. Otherwise all the above advice is pretty consistent with my experience in October 2016 in the 24th TRS, emphasis is on avoiding injury.

  12. We are our own best enemy. As aircrew, it'd be safe to say 96.69% of us are Type-A, workaholic, do what it takes to get shit done (while adhering to tech order and regulatory guidance) kinda people. It's pretty much what got us here. There is no other option, but to get the job done no matter what the cost (sanity, family life, off time, etc) no matter what time of day. It's in our culture and most of you've probably been in long enough to realize this, but the standard we're held to in the USAF and the stardard we maintain no matter what the cost is nearly unmatched by any other community in the service. You can remember that and take pride in that every time you get up in the morning and slap your wings on a fresh bag. Not everyone can do what we do. Some have tried and a lot have failed, which pissed me off when comm weenies want to wear wings to be part of the winged club. off! I don't care what job you do in the military, but do it like your life or someone elses life depends on it like we have to. Like Mx has to. Like AFE has to. Whether it's weapons on target, gas in the air, cargo over a drop zone or the gammut of other fine flying missions we have in the service, we maintain a standard. A very high one and it's taken for granted by leadership. It becomes the norm and we're expected to eat shit and like it. Yeah, there are other communities that have it as bad or worse. I believe it and I don't discount their misery. Everyone has a voice. If you want a chang, you pretty much have three options. You can talk with your feet (there is nothing wrong with this if that is your decision). You can take the bonus, stay and do everything in your power to try to change things for the better. This, unfortunately takes a lot of drive that at this point, most of us don't have. I believe this duty needs to be taken on by our young CGO's. Unfortunately this is the only thing they know. Lastly, take the bonus, stay and STFU. Bitching about things on here, to your wife, in the squadron bar (if you're still allowed to have one) or on the road in front of the young'ns does nothing (although it is nice to vent). We are a crippling force if we get our voices heard in mass. People are walking. That is a very effective tool for gettings things changed. Leadership has no choice. You can make shit roll up hill if you push hard enough. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

  13. Most of the rest of the world does not understand how developed the SOF fires machine has become...they still think in terms of the AOC or CAOC running the fight with 3 GO's, 10 O-6's and 50 O-4's working the same permissions that a single dude in the JSOAC can pass. Sadly, BLOS and VDL have become pass fail, but they do act as an insurance policy in multiple ways. Sorry bra, I don't talk to the CAOC unless I want to know why the tanker is late...AGAIN.

  14. I got an email in response to a ticket from an A1C asking me to justify why our NIPR computers should work by providing how many people use them, how often they deploy, how many pilots/officers we have, and what our squadron's mission is Pretty sure it was probably a Russian hacker. So we've got that going for us.

  15. For those who bank with USAA and don't already play the credit card rewards game, this is a great one-card solution. https://www.usaa.com/inet/wc/bank_cc_limitless_cashback_visa_signature BL: limitless 2.5% cashback on every purchase, no annual fee, the only catch is you have to direct deposit at least $1K monthly with USAA. Even for those with a handful of rewards cards already I think it has a place. I applied and was approved 10 seconds later and it doesn't appear like it's affected by any kind of 5/24 rule like Chase. Adding to my roster of travel cards and will be used for anything that doesn't qualify for a higher rewards rate on another card.

  18. When do you expect this "sensor parity" to occur? And please explain why it will "clearly surpass the U2 in capability," especially after you just said you're a "mission manager" who doesn't fly anything. Who is flying it, and what do they do when the mission requires a little old-fashioned pilotage? If you think that is a pointless question, then I'd venture to say that you really have very little knowledge of the U2's capability as compared to the Global Chicken's.
