So the draft outline for the script for Top Gun 2 has leaked (probably Trump and/or Russians. Same thing, right?): "TOP GUN 2: This Time It's Non-Gender Specific" Having been caught up in the 'Fat Leonard' supply scandal, former Rear Admiral, now Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is given his final assignment as the Commanding Officer, Naval Fighter Weapons School, Miramar Naval Air Station, California. Having been the number two graduate of his class in 1986, 'Maverick's' has unique insight into what the daring young aviators have to face in flying their high-performance, stomach-churning aerial chargers in modern air combat. SCENE 1: 'Maverick' is shown being given a ticket by the Shore Patrol after he was caught driving his Lexus on the flight line road trying to keep up with an F-18 doing touch-and-goes, exceeding the station's 25 mph speed limit by nearly 8 mph. SCENE 4: Having sweated their way through the CBTs, the 2017B class makes its way over to the Miramar All-Ranks Club where the SARC and Alcohol Prevention offices check their IDs at the door, carefully noting their data, and placing their CAC cards in the file to be retrieved on the way out, after the mandatory breathalyzer and room sweep checking for sexual assault victims. Finally making their way to the near-empty bar, as the Isley Brothers "You've lost that lovin' feelin'" begins to blare from the speakers, the four heterosexual men are accosted by the irate school instructor that looks remarkably like Kelly McGillis. But not the hot, wild-haired Kelly. No this the haggish, yet with an Adam's apple, Kelly who instantly begins to berate them for building the modern world. SCENE 5: Meanwhile, in an unnamed Middle Eastern country, the despot that rules that arid, worthless land gases and kills his citizens. Despite it having absolutely no strategic value to the United States, the President, fully backed by the hawks in Congress dependent upon the defense contractors in their districts, sends a short-manned carrier battle group to the region. Why it's short-manned, especially in pilots, is never questioned. Class 2017B receives its orders to man, er, person-up the carrier's flight department despite not having worked up or being current in carrier operations. Stepping into their F-35Cs, they find out that "this helmet is too heavy." This ejection seat is "too tall." But this all-seeing, all-knowing fighter is "just right." Flying an Alpha strike (not your father's Vietnam Alpha strike of 50 jets), this one has four F-35s and two UCAVs, our class of heroes flies into the double-digit SAM rings where they all synch their Blueteeth to some Starbuck's selected folk-rock tunes and proceed to ISR the hell out of the dirt. They return to the boat, all take the three wire, shut down. And hand in their separation papers since they each got a call from major airline. AND CUT...

Data point: 11M, patch, 11 years in ops squadrons, 1000+ combat hours, clean record, highly effective instructor, NATO staff.....not selected. Any doubts on what the USAF values?

The 135 has landed with the nose gear retracted twice without any major damage. It is entirely different if a 135 hits a bunch of cows with the nose gear on a touch and go.

It's a little difficult to explain the differences between IFC I and MFS. Some of the differences are historical. For example, the IFC I does not require a corneal topography. That is because decades ago, corneal topography was not readily available. Thus, it was done at Brooks (now Wright-Patt) as part of the MFS. Also, the MFS includes color vision and red lens testing as part of the eye exam. I believe that was due to the fact that there was some inconsistency on how these tests were being administered at the local bases so they decided to have them done as part of the MFS. Finally, there is a computer based "Neuro-psych" test that is part of MFS simply because the testing software was not available anywhere but the ACS (Brooks/Wright-Patt) or the USAFA. If you've had an IFC I completed at your local base, you will come to Wright-Patt for the MFS (Medical Flight Screening) exam. Generally, this will consist of the items listed above. You will almost never have your eyes dilated. However, if there are any questions lingering from your IFC I exam, they will be re-evaluated at Wright-Patt, including dilation in rare cases. Most folks have a combined IFC I/MFS done at either Wright-Patt or USAFA. It's typically the OTS folks who come for a MFS only. Let me know if you want more info.

I hope we never have another major war. With the way we treat our warriors, hope may be the only defense that remains.

1. Not a statistically significant sample size, less than 20 for either. 2. MXG and MSG O4s usually meet their IPZ board on their first, or sometimes second squadron command. Any flyer is, at most, an ADO in this window. 3. MX and support organizations absolutely dominate flying organizations in terms of OPRs, awards, decs, and PRFs. Unfortunate but true. 4. The USAF promotes (or claims to) based on potential to serve in the next higher grade. Viewed through that lens, strafing a Taliban stronghold and saving an Army platoon carries less weight than leading a squadron of 200 Airmen. Unfortunate, but true. The USAF doesn't make this a secret though, yet we (aircrew) still suck at writing for success.

From what I've seen in the past, senior raters try to use their [edit: excess] DPs to push through good folks who otherwise wouldn't get a serious look--too many years flying the line (especially in the same Sq), or Art 15/LOR for shenanigans as a CGO.

When was the last time we actually won anything: Desert Storm? How did we win during Desert Fox, Operation Allied Force, OEF, OIF, Operation Odyssey Dawn? Don't even get me started on where ISR goes despite tons of sorties. Maxing out your people to fill databases for analysis doesn't make any sense. When a war kicks off, there is no golden damn BB...cough Korea. Adversaries aren't stupid anymore. Look at what tactics were employed against us during OAF. Then we watched how much of their equipment that actually survived the operation.

If you have been passed over, get the F out and find something else. It's like holding on to a high school girlfriend that breaks up with you when you go to college, its all good in the end.

Speaking of UOQs and BAH, what's the current word on "geo-bacheloring?" Almost certainly not bringing my spouse to UPT, am I going to be forced to live in dorms? Can I live in dorms and get some sort of partial BAH? Or just split a rental house near base with a couple other students?

Having survived through cuts beginning back in 2006...I think a lot of folks have been keeping "options" warmed up on the back burner. Buuuuullllsshiiit I would take that non-continuation letter, frame it in carbonite, send copies to an attorney, the Washington Post, and an unnamed trusted agent in case I were to befall "an unfortunate event", and demand my separation pay under threat of contacting all 535 congresscritters. Turn the news off, go outside, and do something manly. If something newsworthy happens, it will show up in cartoons or you will be called to deploy. Being "hyper informed" and wringing your hands on the Internet will not change the course of events.

So, who is smart on how much the bonus is really an ADSC? I've seen some AD dudes in my guard unit lately planning on getting out of it. Case 1 - passed over for O5 and hoping to get passed over again. He says then he can separate and pay back the unearned portion of the bonus ("earned" 25/yr since signing, so ultimately pay back the difference between that and the sum of the up-front and annual installments he's banked so far). Is this how it works for passed-over dudes? Case 2 - similar dude claiming that even if he promotes APZ he can do the same. To me, this would mean anyone can get out of the bonus if they pay it back. Any truth to this? Can one really peace out ~4 yrs into the 9 year bonus if they have the coin to pay back?

That was my biggest problem with it....we don't book ANYTHING thru DTS so to slip some weak ass "catch all" claiming the condos/houses aren't up to fire code is asinine.......

Maybe, but as the software develops and is updated, the 35 will get a bit sportier I suspect. The aircraft with the operational software load is not a pig according to the OT&E community, referencing the article from the Norwegian test pilot here. It's just different than a Viper/Hornet/Harrier and will need the TTPs developed to fight accordingly in the WVR arena. Probably not as maneuverable as a Viper with the GE engine but with LO, sensor fusion, good maneuverability and an HMD with high off foresight weapons, it's setup for success. Not that my rantings on BO.net add up to anything but I've come to accept the F-35 as a large part of the future of the USAF and likely the AFs of many of our Allies, hating on it reflexively is pointless, it is done.
