I entered active duty in November, 1974. The draft was just winding down. The USAF never drafted anybody, but both the officer and enlisted groups were full of people who joined only to avoid the draft. You don't want to go back to the draft! These 'avoiders' didn't want to be there, most hated the service, and most did the minimum required to get by. Insubordination was rampant, and nothing could be done about it. It was bad in the Air Force, and I'm sure it was much worse in the Army. The military isn't some kind of reform school or social experiment. Baring some existential threat to the CONUS the last thing the military needs is a bunch of draftees!!!!!2 points

This luggage tag, presumably owned by "Viper Driver Tweak" was found by an associate of mine at the aeropuerto in Erie, PA. It is currently being held hostage by the Swedish Bikini Team, who are threatening to suffocate it with their boobs and/or thighs if ransom demands for its return are not met. If you know Tweak, and he cares enough about this $15 bag tag to save it from certain death from overexposure to soft, delicious Nordic flesh, contact me to help arrange to get it back. Photos/video of the bag tag torture threats unavailable at this time.1 point

I was there as a stud in 2010. Based on what I saw, QoL and ops were pretty good compared to AF UPT, but that was a long time ago now. I’m glad to hear it’s still a thing.1 point

Not in favor of the draft....right now...in times of national emergency is another discussion. What I do find interesting is that we as a country continue to discriminate based on race by requiring only young men to register for Selective Service.1 point

What I'm saying is forced labor is the exact OPPOSITE of liberty, which is the principle on which this nation was founded. That fire is being constantly tended by our all volunteer force. If we have the need for a larger force, then we must offer better incentives for people to join or stay in. Do you not think you'd be degrading our security and vigilance by forcing people to join the military against their will? How much resentment towards the government would some of these people start to harbor? How many would then turn to extremism? We have enough issues with discipline of those that voluntarily joined, imagine how much time we'd be wasting having to manage those that do not want to be in.1 point

Than you all for making my point for me. You're pissed about being forced to pay taxes, forced to pay for health insurance, but you're ok with forced labor. Isn't listed anywhere in the Constitution or Declaration of Independence. The word Liberty is. Maybe you should look it up in the dictionary.1 point

You will be paid as an E3 from day one of your enlistment. Even though you are technically an E1 in basic training you will still receive E3 pay. You will sew on E3 at the completion of BMT. You will be getting E3 pay during drill before you leave to basic as well. The state pays for your drill status checks and the federal government pays when you are on orders during BMT and technical training also when you are on MEST training days. Your job is bound by the law to hold your position while you are on orders with the military. Hope this helps and good luck!1 point

Duty to your country. It's not demeaning or dehumanizing, it is service your country is calling upon from its citizenry. This is a two way street, nations serve their citizens and citizens serve their nation, voluntarily or when called on. We've lost that in recent decades and have been draining the fuel tank of national cultural virtue without putting anything back in, it's time to top off the tank. I know that it (mandatory service) has never been perfect, the wealthy and connected sometimes got deferments or preferential postings thru unscrupulous actions but that doesn't mean that concept of mandatory service, specifically military service, was not overall beneficial to the country, directly in acquired military manpower required or indirectly in other ways (character development, intermixing of normally disparate groups, a unifying experience shared by generations, etc...). I see your point but mandatory military service is not forcing someone to perform economic activity from which someone else will profit (that's slavery) this is service to the nation. Honestly, I don't think we (the military) really need it and it may not have the effect some of us would hope it would have on the youth impressed into service but I would not dismiss it out of hand.1 point

what do you call forcing someone to pay money? theft or taxes? you're playing word games. labor or money for the common good isn't the same thing as slavery and theft.1 point

The all-volunteer military has resulted in never-ending conflict. The price of war is low. The eternal trickle of military involvement feeds the military-industrial complex, which is chairman-ed by retired generals mostly who know best how to manipulate the machine into industrial profit. The country must devise some form of civic service. Otherwise we will continue to have elected leaders send our volunteer men and women to die in fights where the largest military force in the world has no business fighting.1 point

I have no qualms with pulling shooters from other platforms to stand this program up. My beef is the authors claim that his MC-12 experience gives him the cred to be a first-in flight lead/IP for this program.1 point

Something you should consider is to never pass up an opportunity for Uncle Sam to pay you. Whoever talked about the weight is spot on. Buy the truck and a small home gym. Move that shit first time...make money on the process. Hell, if I was single and a shiny 2Lt again, I’d buy my ass a 5th wheel or some shit. Pay off that MF in the first couple of years then BOOM...something you can use for a long time. Buying a trailer of your own is something that the AF will eventually buy for you through moving costs.1 point

you're using the term "liberty" as if it is a unconditional right with no boundaries. surely you must acknowledge that total liberty, total freedom cannot exist when a nation of 350 million individuals want to thrive, advance, and to defend themselves against exterior threats. in the course of those pursuits for the common good, nearly all individuals are going to be required to make some involuntary sacrifices. Every law is a restriction on liberty and freedom of the people whom left to their own devices, would act conversely. but I think you would agree they are required for our nation to endure. if we agree (and perhaps we don't) that at least some limits to individual liberty and freedom are required for a nation to function, then we only disagree on where the limits are placed, and that's subjective. You can't just point to the Constitution and say it contains the word "liberty". what we seek is a nation that provides the MOST individual freedom and liberty for the most people while still ensuring the nation as a whole continues to succeed. since the time period immediately after 9/11, i believe we're seeing a breakdown of our national values and our national identity. a thing i've learned from my military service is that overall, the connection in values and identity I shared with my military coworkers far exceeds anything i've ever seen outside the military. Why? because we share common experiences, adversities. the amount of personal sacrifice for something dictates the value you place on it. I think it is no coincidence that we are seeing a decline in appreciation for our nation as we're also seeing a decline in the rate of voluntary military participation (sacrifice). I will say i do not believe in "serve or prison" in most cases, but I think compulsory national service could be heavily incentivized, and it need not be military. Our security and prosperity was earned through a great deal of sacrifice and a great deal will be necessary to maintain it. A lot of work needs to be done and if you want to enjoy all the great aspects here, you should be required to do more than simply exist. all the free-loading libertarians should be required to do their part.0 points
