Do you want a super villain? Cause badmouthing a philanthropic kabzillionaire who loves to make rocket ships, flame throwers, and submarines is how you get a super villain.4 points

Your bro may have been screwed in the past, but that is not what the current AFI 31- 2110 says. As of 26 Jan 18, Table 5.2. 365-day Extended Deployment Declinations/3-Day Options states if you have 19 yrs TAFMS as of notification date or RDD of a 365 you may request a retirement and opt out of the 365. AFPC could deny your retirement request and send you on the 365 but you are not getting separated instead of retired. After 19 yrs TAFMS your two options are establish a retirement date or AFPC denies your retirement request and deploys you. If you have less than 19 yrs TAFMS as of notification date or RDD of the 365, you may request separation and if approved would not get a retirement. (Forgive me I quoted above Figure 5.2 instead of Table 5.2 that replaced it.) As for getting out as soon as you can no argument there. Bottom line, until you have an established retirement date the power to let you retire or deploy you is still the AF's decision.2 points

The lack of knowledge that they exist is a pretty big issue, that coupled with no leadership to use them. Last I remember there were a pair of civilians who maintained them but no one knew how to fly them or what the 11-248 was. It would go a long, long way towards helping cadets/the AF if there was a pilot there who ran the program and/or led classes on basics of airmanship or gave the cadets some basic things to practice. Basically they just need someone to focus and teach the cadets, the rest will work itself out.1 point

If you are close* to an AD retirement, it is entirely worth it. The savings on family health insurance over the course of an airline career are absurd. And the cash for life makes year one pay palatable. *-within 3 years or so....depending on how bad you’ve got it.1 point

The chump change appears to be working. And handing it out as flight pay doesn't give the Air Force what it wants - predictability. Almost every 12B I know in my community is taking the bonus at $25K/year, many for the full 9 years. The other thing to keep in mind is that all those 12X folks taking the bonus means a whole lot of 12X folks who can't 7-day opt a 365. Which should help relieve some of the bleeding, if not all of it. Any of the LAF taskers can be filled by a 12X just as easily as an 11X.1 point

DoD is capping gi bill transfers at 16 years. If you're going to do it, do it now. https://www.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/1573240/dod-announces-policy-change-on-transfer-of-post-911-gi-bill-benefits/1 point

Similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Apparently everyone before me had dwell time or a good excuse that the CC believed, so he said I’ve been picked, and I leave next week. I informed him that I have no ADSC and will be going right now to separate (before an official notification), and I was at 18 yrs then. When I informed him that there are many dudes that have an ADSC and couldn’t say no, it was like he had never thought about that concept. Don’t assume your CC knows anything about the regs. Other replies are correct, 179’s are totally up to the wing CC.1 point

Every eligible CSO/WSO that I know is taking this bonus (which was long overdue). I find it hilarious because I keep hearing “it’s not about the money” for pilots. This is a case study of you offer more money, you get qualified people to stay. I understand that CSO’s aren’t going to the airlines, but it is interesting.1 point

2! I was planning on staying beyond 20 anyways so it was an easy kill for me. Little extra jangle in the pocket never hurts. Cooter1 point

My current assignment: Layover in Frankfurt Germany. My functional (me) is telling me to enjoy some beer and feel sorry for you guys stuck in the active-duty clown show. I truly hope every one of you find an escape hatch to the Guard or Reserve, or, just bail entirely. Good luck folks, this cold one is for you! Edit: Before this 6-day trip, I had 11 days off. Every single day, playing with my kids, taking them to lunch, saw Incredibles 2, a few days later Ant Man and the Wasp, made them breakfast almost every day, lots of “quality” time with the wife, honey do list complete, etc, etc. After this trip, I have 5 days off. God bless you all. 🍺1 point

Think syllabus standardization. If academy pilot-select cadets had pre-UPT training at the academy, that training would still need to be taught to the ROTC/OTS studs. No real savings in time. Best case is the ROTC/OTS studs get the same training at their UPT base prior to starting UPT. About the only thing someone needs to do before UPT is maybe learn ops limits/boldface, and show up willing to work hard and learn. If a reasonable percentage of students can't learn the info in the time allotted in the syllabus, then either the time allotted or method of instruction needs to be corrected. Otherwise, it's like saying you need to do sos correspondence before you go to sos in-residence.1 point

I'd rather separate and get an airline gig and hope to get hired on with a guard unit to finish my 20 than to waste away in the desert for another 7 months. YMMV but i've done enough deployments in my time to know when it's worth it and it's not.1 point

Dam inspector: The dam is leaking and it’s losing water Dam engineer: well we need to find the holes and fix them so the dam doesn’t break Dam General: just keep adding more water so the lake stays at the current level1 point

Personally, I would never go for an online degree. It has no prestige behind it. Ever heard of Phoenix University?1 point

I joined the ANG during the internship of my Family Medicine residency. The Guard was very flexible but my program was too and allowed me to participate in UTA weekends. I was able to get good years in each of the three years I was in residency training. I don't know how flexible the AF Reserves will/can be. I was even able to convince my residency program to credit me an "medical officer indoctrination" elective for OTS/COT.1 point
