Marines will add VTOL before it's over and then it won't be able to fly within 35 miles of a thunderstorm.4 points

Not my place to offer advice, but... That check of the month club is not something to just write off with 4.5 left. Hurts now; pays off for a lifetime later (been there, done that). Not ever a 14N, however, there are lots of either meaningful and/or personally rewarding niche jobs out there for 14Ns. Worked with 'em lots - Green door stuff, three-letter agencies, etc. that The Man has to fill but doesn't care about. Get in there or somewhere like that, do a good job, and your post-AF career will take care of itself. The clearance(s) and contacts are worth $$. Don't just toss 'em. This isn't about The Man anymore; this is about you and your family and what is best for them. If you have post-AF plans/dreams, by all means, disregard all. If not, set yourself up now for doing well after hanging up the uniform. Big Blue doesn't care now and won't then. Hang tough; it's not personal (however much it feels that way), just numbers on a excel somewhere.3 points

I don’t think there’s anything especially difficult about flying anything these days. Fighter, bomber, transport etc etc. its the mission specialization. Kind of like graduating Med school. Anyone can do it. But then doctors specialize. That’s what makes our Air Force great. We have people who are word class experts in their field. ISR, tac airlift, Air refueling, bombing, Air to air.2 points

Exactly; It’s an Army Uniform that the DoD is adopting to save money for deployed Ops. If we all willing stop wearing our Flight Suits to work because there is a “new shiny” option available, it’s our own fault when they get replaced. As Charleton Heston said “From my cold dead hands”!2 points

Why would anyone wear A2CUs to the office in garrison? If we start doing that en mass, then we’re giving them an excuse to take our bags away. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Just to confirm what several people have rightly assumed, the FACT program is essentially a 2 year T-38 FAIP tour with a U-2 interview at the end. It’s by no means guaranteed because if you can’t land the jet (or we don’t trust you to handle missions by yourself), we don’t want you. I’d assume they’d be assignable anywhere in the CAF, to include going to IFF (with 2+ more years of T-38 experience) if they don’t make the interview. But it’s a good shot at joining the Brotherhood while spending a couple of years flying jets in NorCal. I’d have put it at the top of my dream sheet for sure. I’m excited to see who they bring out, and how they do.2 points

You guys all realize the first post in this thread was like 14 years ago? We are at least 3 lawsuits and 4 government shutdowns away from the first piece of sheet metal being stamped out. Shit gonna change2 points

The big disctintion is the fact you can have 2/3rds of 5 people (minimal for a panel) to send you to confinement for a long time. That’s how the military system prevents hung jurys.1 point

I can't speak for the loadmasters, but the copilot got a PCS to another C-17 base (don't know where CP is now) and the AC got picked up for a unique opportunity which he took. Its a shame because I only got the opportunity to work with him once and he was far from the "reckless cowboy" Allardick accused him of being.1 point

As Moose said, there are only a handful of U-2s and U-2 drivers. There are what, 3 combat AC-130 squadrons, crews of 7-8 ish, plus the training units/test stuff. Fairly sure y’all are the largest community in AFSOC. I’m sure the U-28s, CVs and everyone else would love to hand pick everyone in the community, but it’s just not feasible.1 point
-
AFSOC is a huge MAJCOM vs a relatively small U-2 community. Especially when you consider the growth in AFSOC over the last 15 years. It’s simply way too big an operation to be selective like that. There are selective units out there but that’s a different animal1 point

The pilots need to stop saying that it's not about the money because money is part of it. Quality of life is everything and money is a significant part of QOL. So are flying more, shorter deployments, less queep, etc. No one is leaving the AF at 12 years with the plan to fly for the regionals for the rest of their career, so money is absolutely a significant part. Hard to get mad at HAF for believing what pilots are telling them.1 point

To piggyback this thought: professional pilots should be able to ID their weak areas and brush up on them. At some point every UPT student has met MIF on the basics and if they lack, then nobody is to blame but that subpar individual.1 point

They have been taught the basics. If they retain it or not is another question. Don’t believe them every time they say, “I’ve never heard that before.” I saw that excuse plenty as an FTU instructor when I absolutely knew they’d covered a particular topic previously. Retention is on the student1 point

ACU = Army Combat Uniform = Normal uniform of Soldiers in the Army, available in Multi-Cam, OCP and UCP A2CU = Army Aircrew Combat Uniform = Pilot Two Piece that shows off how fat your are or are not. When you ditch the Velcro straps because they don't reach you are ready for CW4+ or O5+. Currently available in UCP and Multi-Cam -- OCP coming to a warehouse near you soon. OCP = Operational Combat Pattern (aka Scorpion W2, close to Multi-Cam but with slightly different pattern - unless they are laying flat next to each other it is hard to tell) UCP = Universal Camouflage Pattern -- designed to universally stand out in all environments. It does actually work fairly well in the IR spectrum, but in a woodland environment it is useless. The sad part about the A2CU in Army circles is that we ditched our bag in order to have them. Reasoning: we will look more like the guys we live to support. End result from careerist: "A2CUs are not authorized at <insert event>, wear your ACUs instead so we blend in". Of course now they are considering bringing back said bags and the morale patches that were also a casualty along the way -- in order to solve morale problems/pilot attrition. Or maybe that is just the pipe dream. Edit to add: but the FREE (fire resistant environmental ensemble) jacket is probably the best thing since the poncho liner that the Army gave me. I still worry how leaky the two piece is in a fire vs the bag or if they had invested in making something more functional vs fashionable.1 point
