  1. Why the fuck should I get additional time for going to white jets? I’ve lived up to my decade post UPT commitment. AFPC fighting me for 6 more months post commitment tells me all I need to know. Get fucked.

  4. Fun fact: The moon landing scenes in First Man were filmed on the same sound stage as the actual moon landing.

  5. I submit building a basement on a sandy ocean pennisula at 0' MSL that can pump out 10' of storm surge is much more expensive than making an airplane flyable.

  6. Understood. It's also a retirement ceremony and can be as much or as little as required wrt the presentations -- the retiree still gets all the paperwork from the current Prez. The So What is that it ain't about YOU (as the commander), it's about the retiree. This particular commander saw something that wasn't there, and ultimately got relieved for his reaction to it. It's a pattern... Better CYA than push the envelope - even in perception. It's pathetic - indicative of a guy focused more on the queep and looking good (similar to accosting people for walking across the grass - zing!) than shit that actually matters. Chuck

  8. You’re right, it does matter and absolutely needs to be corrected. But it should’ve been corrected months ago with a swift “No!” From CSAF. Again, I’m not affected by this policy SNAFU, but it seems like dumb ass policies without oversight is situation normal. It probably has been since the 40s.. just seems more magnified now.

  9. The same reason I sometimes park my car in flood zones and chase hail storms. Daddy needs a new whip.

  12. I can speak for the -135 community only... Civilian contract covers all initial (Altus) and continuation (most big -135 bases have 1 or 2 sims on base -- continuation sims: 4 sims per year focusing on a different system). Each day there are periods of open sim time (referred to as "government time") where the sim is available for USAF use (check rides, whatever). USAF IPs run the sim during these periods because there generally isn't any formal syllabus training going on (except for some AR training at McConnell, or tactics, or stuff like that). Pilots can use these "government time" periods to slay beans, work on proficiency, etc. And now, back to your regularly scheduled Track Select thread. 😄

  13. Non-compliance with...the AFI? Because the AFI is pretty clear that you shouldn't be writing your own OPR anyway. So if you're already passed over and running out the clock on retirement, go ahead and fight that battle. What are they going to do...pass you over again?

  14. Probably be better off building earthen structures that have that dome shape like the hurricane houses you see leftover from the 70s. Don’t need to be huge, just big enough for 2-3 planes... build 4-5 of them for the small number you always expect to be down. Same basic principle of a HAS just set out from the onset with storms in mind not 500lbs bombs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. I thought First Man was good. I'd warn that if you're expecting a movie like others you've seen on the space program, e.g. a docudrama like Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, etc. it's not quite that genre--it's a biopic. That is, it's not as much about the moon landing, the space program or the cold war--it's about the life of Neil Armstrong. I'd say it did that very well and it's clear they made an effort to keep it historically accurate (some creative licence here and there but I don't think any more than Apollo 13 had). The camera work hits and misses. The X-15, Gemini and lunar scenes were excellent (saw it in a dfx theater with really good sound--recommend). For the dialogue scenes though, they overdid the grainy "home movie" style with too many shaky, blurry, zoom-in closeups, really distracts and gets annoying. They shot most of it on film to give it that grainy look, but then switch to IMAX for the lunar scenes--a good call. What I'd heard about the flag controversy was that some pundit didn't like that they weren't wearing the flag on their uniforms....when a simple google search reveals that the original Gemini uniforms had no flag. Manufactured outrage.

  26. You should read 13 Days to Glory by Lon Tinkle. Those guys stayed there fully expecting to be relieved by a larger Texan force. When their situation became clear, they all chose to stay and fight to bleed the Mexican army and give the new government time. It’s one of my favorite stories from the Texas Revolution, right behind San Jacinto and the ass whooping that Sam Houston put on the Mexican army. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  27. While that would be perfect for most of us in a perfect world. However how can we write your/our retirement dec without all the fodder from the opr’s?

  28. I just want to stop writing my own OPRs since I’m passed over enough times to never get promoted again. Because that would be better that the waste of text that they are with no push line since they’ll never get me promoted.

  30. Best way to implement static close outs would be with young ranks and let it permeate up and phase out as the majors and above get out. Inalready have 15 years of old system. Seems too late to change

  32. Since probably 90% of Baseops wasn't born yet/then,...humor me....I actually look forward to seeing "First Man", despite the Hollywood spin. I vividly recall watching the landing as a Cadet. The Vietnam war was pretty much in full s..t, and we were all looking forward to getting into the game. Little did we know back then...but that's another story...However, we were beating the DRPCBs to the moon. I have had the honor of meeting both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Once as a cadet, and later flying Neil and his wife to Athens in a MD-11. Anyway, sadly we are again in a s..t show, but it was far worse in the late 60s and early 70s and we will get through this.
