Fun fact: The moon landing scenes in First Man were filmed on the same sound stage as the actual moon landing.5 points

Last thing the AF needs is to give a little authority to some hoity-toity Maj who thinks he can go fixin things that don't need to be fixed with all his fancy book-learnin'.4 points

I submit building a basement on a sandy ocean pennisula at 0' MSL that can pump out 10' of storm surge is much more expensive than making an airplane flyable.2 points

I dunno. I kinda feel like the inconvenience of me always flying around that airspace far exceeds the necessity for someone else to fly in circles within it.1 point

Asking if we have erred strategically in placing such a large fleet of expensive assets in harm's way is a valid question. It's an ORM problem akin to a preflight ORM. There is a level of acceptable risk with each mission and with each basing decision. Looking to see if this risk was appropriately evaluated is pretty much what we do anytime there is an aircraft mishap. We have plenty of AF assets in tornado alley. Lots of others sit in other beach-side hurricane zones. Some sit on earthquake faults. But, just like any aircraft mishap, we need to look back and decide if the risk was worth the price. In this case, it was potentially an extremely steep price.1 point

They don't "need" the overwater airspace as much as I need to fly direct from FLL or MCO to MSY or HOU.1 point

I mean... Wright Patt spent like 8 million dollars to build a bathroom on the golf course back in the 90s, so while it’s totally possible to spend that much I’m almost sure it’s because we’re stupid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

They gave me the authority to stand up a new test unit and do O-5 things, but that experience doesn’t really matter apparently. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Already an asspain to get to for a TR and the Raptor/WESP need the overwater airspace.1 point

No one is arguing that these jets take a lot of maintenance or that this is the reality for tactical jets. But saying “this is how it’s always been done, sorry we weren’t able to hurrivac 10% of our nation’s premiere 5th gen aircraft” and going on business as usual can’t continue. Maybe it’s not such a smart thing to have aircraft disassembled in phase checks on the Florida panhandle during hurricane season. When you purchase a fraction of the fleet size needed, you can’t treat these aircraft like every other fighter fleet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Why hasn't the coastal areas taken the far east approach to the annual storms they deal with. You go to okinawa and everything is cement or the equivalent. I was at Tyndall for first assignment and we hangared 2-3 times for pending storms. We would put 10-20 F-15s in the available hangars and head to the dorms to party.1 point

Yeah I was just going off what was here and active stateside. Even if that monster could lift a Raptor it doesn’t help if it requires us to take it apart and move it here with 1 of a dozen available AN-124 charters.1 point

Yeah looking at this if we’re thinking “are we taking an unnecessary risk” I think the smart Lowest cost highest payoff universal move is building on site protection. HAS, Purpose built hangers, whatever... I think this might make a military that has 20 silver bullets parked in Missouri that cannot be replaced go “hey maybe I can spend some cash on a better garage for my stuff.” for the cost of 1 B-2 or 2-3 Raptors..... what could you build...1 point

About 20-30k lbs over any reasonable slingload. 53K is the heavyweight champion for sling load, and even it barely trips the 30k mark.1 point

No personal offense... it’s a terrible idea. As the storm comes closer inland and gets over shallower waters the rise and fall in sea state increases drastically. This would be where any commercial cargo barge or slow wide flat decked ship you could crane and lash airplanes too would be. Boats don’t push inland during storms for good reason, unless you’re in a harbor that gives protection you’re better off out to sea where the wave action is less eventful running pumps wide open. Add to that a vessel like that isn’t made to go fast, so unless you’re keeping it at the place for a rainy day (bad pun unintentional) it’s very unlikely by the time you’d recognize the danger and issue the order to move it would get to you, get loaded, and get clear. I can speak for the -135 community only... Civilian contract covers all initial (Altus) and continuation (most big -135 bases have 1 or 2 sims on base -- continuation sims: 4 sims per year focusing on a different system). Each day there are periods of open sim time (referred to as "government time") where the sim is available for USAF use (check rides, whatever). USAF IPs run the sim during these periods because there generally isn't any formal syllabus training going on (except for some AR training at McConnell, or tactics, or stuff like that). Pilots can use these "government time" periods to slay beans, work on proficiency, etc. And now, back to your regularly scheduled Track Select thread. 😄1 point

To Monday morning QB leaving F-22s behind. First you would need to know how many parts were stripped off these jets so the others could leave. Maybe they had to strip them down to fill up spares kits that were flying to Wright Patterson. When did all mx stop, the Wing CC ordered a mandatory evac? I'm sure ACC gave them OK to leave them, knowing there was not enough time to cann parts from Langley jets to get them to at least NMCA status for 1 time flights to a mx facility. Having driven to Mexico Beach from OKC for my last beach vacation last June I remember thinking it must be a bitch to get out of here in a mass evac, So families and troops not accompanying the fleet had to be given days notice to get out of Dodge. Now we have a F-22 wing that is homeless, it has to start flying soon to keep up on pilot quals. Most of its support equipment is FUBARd since the AGE stuff you use on F-15's and F-16's will not work on a F-22. I'm sure Dayton Ohio is not a ideal location to run fighter ops, nice museum though. I do not foresee Tyndall closing since it has the QF-16 drone mission and everybody and our allies use it to to do live fire training over the gulf.1 point

I thought First Man was good. I'd warn that if you're expecting a movie like others you've seen on the space program, e.g. a docudrama like Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, etc. it's not quite that genre--it's a biopic. That is, it's not as much about the moon landing, the space program or the cold war--it's about the life of Neil Armstrong. I'd say it did that very well and it's clear they made an effort to keep it historically accurate (some creative licence here and there but I don't think any more than Apollo 13 had). The camera work hits and misses. The X-15, Gemini and lunar scenes were excellent (saw it in a dfx theater with really good sound--recommend). For the dialogue scenes though, they overdid the grainy "home movie" style with too many shaky, blurry, zoom-in closeups, really distracts and gets annoying. They shot most of it on film to give it that grainy look, but then switch to IMAX for the lunar scenes--a good call. What I'd heard about the flag controversy was that some pundit didn't like that they weren't wearing the flag on their uniforms....when a simple google search reveals that the original Gemini uniforms had no flag. Manufactured outrage.1 point

Having been in Hot, Africa Hot (realz Africa), the 2-piece is the bikini of uniforms. Back home, bag all the way. It was a defiance at one point in time (Blues Monday) and is my rebel uniform. Want to thow a subtle F.U. at the man, sport that verboten patch. That and pull and zip and I'm off to work. So, occasions dictate the clothes, wear accordingly. Out1 point

You sound very angry towards people In bags or who want bags. To address some of your salty points, I don’t need it to validate myself in life, but thanks for your unsolicited concern. I got plenty of things besides a piece of green clothing for that. I just prefer it for its functionality, comfort, and appearance compared to the alternative. I started in a bag in the army, then A2CUs (BDU version, ACU version, and OCP version before I got out a few years ago). OCPs worked well with all our army crap. Still preferred the bag though. But as an Air Force guy now, I don’t care about army kit, or army policies, or army anything, and most of my Air Force bro’s don’t either. Maybe the helo guys do but I haven’t talked to many of them. I have no use for a 2 piece now. Fortunately I don’t see bags going away from the ejection seat community so this doesn’t really affect me. But you can keep your 2 piece since it suits your retarded army base policies and it’s easier for you to take a shit and go to the field and play army and all that fun stuff. But all my army bro’s would love to go back to a bag. And no, your point saying the only ones who want a 1 piece are guys who haven’t worn both is patently false. I, and all the dudes I went through army flight school with in bags, much prefer that to a 2 piece for everyday wear. If OCP A2CUs work for AMC or helo bro’s here, cool...whatever makes the mission happen and makes life easier for people. OCPs as a non flyer duty uniform look 69x better than ABUs. I welcome that change and don’t care about looking like the army in that regard. As stated, there’s a reason the Air Force left the army, and a reason many army guys still leave (try to leave) the army for the air guard/res. Of all the dudes who have hit me up on here asking with transition help, I’d say half have mentioned the thought of wearing a bag again as a positive thing, and wish the army would go back to that. The view on flight suits by the army, both in their wear and associated rules, some of which you mentioned, is a microcosm of the shit culture you guys have to deal with. Glad I’m out. Enjoy. ✌1 point

I've been searching variants of "100th FS, 176th FS, 187th FW, 115th FW UPT application/videos". Some of you guys are hilarious! Wonder if there are any tips or critiques we can share on those videos. Surprised that a lot of people went over the 3 min max time limit! Thoughts?1 point

Since probably 90% of Baseops wasn't born yet/then,...humor me....I actually look forward to seeing "First Man", despite the Hollywood spin. I vividly recall watching the landing as a Cadet. The Vietnam war was pretty much in full s..t, and we were all looking forward to getting into the game. Little did we know back then...but that's another story...However, we were beating the DRPCBs to the moon. I have had the honor of meeting both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Once as a cadet, and later flying Neil and his wife to Athens in a MD-11. Anyway, sadly we are again in a s..t show, but it was far worse in the late 60s and early 70s and we will get through this.1 point

How recent is your info? I heard formal release is alive and well. Not sure who's correct since it's coming from the casual guys. I'm done with IFT so I figured it wouldn't hurt to passively read it so that by the time I get there it sticks.1 point
