This. Again, leaders need to step up and make decisions. If the AFI is getting in the way, commanders need to have the balls to say “Ok, ignore a, b, and c for now and let’s get the mission done”. Their next phone call should be to their boss: “Sir regulation X is preventing my people from doing their jobs efficiently. I’ve directed them to ignore certain provisions. Here is my supporting documentation. Don’t like it? Feel free to replace me with a yes man. Delta is still hiring.”4 points

We did. But when every airman/NCO/SNCO in the afe chain responds with “well sir, the AFI says...” then I give all that feedback to the oss/CC (who seemed receptive) and went on about my business. I don’t have time to 847 every damn afe reg, and since I can’t order people to use common sense, not sure what other recourse there is that is worth my time. I tried to used the CSAFs “if it doesn’t make sense, stop doing it” mantra, but good luck finding a SMSgt who will let their shop actually violate an AFI, whether it makes sense or not.2 points

While I tend to agree, I can also see the flip side of the coin whereas the constant rotation of personnel causes equal issues... The better solution is actually having an end game to this ridiculous and endless "conflicts" we've been engaged in for the past 17+ years. At this point we are just throwing fuel on the flames and not actually working to a solution to put the fire out. I know that's grossly simplified, but until that happens, there will be no "fixing" the USAF or any other services...2 points

Sounds like on opportunity to instruct young airmen on their mission in the AF, and if they didn't respond appropriately, then have a talk with the life support officer. If we can't fix broken shit in the ops building ourselves, how can we expect big blue to fix broken shit outside the ops building?1 point

Don't forget to run a thorough ORM review. If the compressed timeline is driving the crew to a high enough value, it will probably require a phone call to the waiver authority (OG/CC?) at 0400. Enough of those phone calls from guys while they're standing at the clearing barrel on speaker phone, and I think your boss will come up with a new policy.1 point

PIT is backed up because we only cut 8 sorties from the syllabus. So if you could hurry up and PA already and suck less maybe you would all graduate on time. Never mind the record weather attrition. Jump in on our new VR simulators, you should be ready to graduate in a couple of hours. Innovate harder for f#$% sake. Sorry I gota go clean my pant's now, as a blue kool aid drinking guy I am any time any one says innovate I climax immediately now.1 point

Unless you’re an 0-6 or higher, in a command billet, nobody needs to be doing a year deployment, period. I can understand needing that continuity at the 0-6+ level....outside of that you’re damn hard pressed convincing me there’s any good reason someone needs to spend a year over there. You tell me what job exists at the 0-3 ~ 0-5 level that absolutely must have the same human being in it for a whole year. I call BS on that noise.1 point

Because while the 365 was the best example of the problem, it was not the actual problem. A better way of putting it might be: "I'm not willing to commit to an undetermined yet assuredly significant time away from my family, for a cause that is no longer obviously patriotic, led by people who are not concerned with minimizing that time away, compensated in a way that does not recognize dissimilar contributions, in an organization that prioritizes the bureaucratic process over the operational skill set. The 365 was just a bold, underlined version of that statement I think, but plenty of tanker pilots trapped in 2-on 2-off Qatari hell will tell you it still exists in smaller dose deployments1 point

No uniform shots, selfies, other people, etc. Smile. - Your title should be relevant to your desired (civilian) role, not Flight Commander, Director of Staff, etc. Eliminate any military jargon/words you can throughout - Customize your LI URL (linked.com/pete.mitchell vs linked.com/8723gl431gbf9o718345*#kj3214) - Quantify your accomplishments in your positions...OPR/EPR bullets have great info, just make sure it's translated to civilian-speak - Personalize connection requests if you don't know the target There's a lot of info out there (just google 'LinkedIn tips")...let me know if you have any other questions.1 point

2! Not to derail this into a PMP thread, but do not go into the exam without knowing this process chart and these formulas cold. I wouldn't have passed if I had done just the Syracuse courseware and not done substantial other prep.1 point

YMMV. I told them I was only available for one location...the one close to my house. Wasn't a problem. Also, when I interviewed folks for Amazon, that was NOT one of the questions I asked. (In fairness, that question might be asked by the recruiter or HR). "Too many 12 hour days"....yup....like every day. Holiday season (Peak) is the worst...16+ hour days 6 days a week, but it's all part of the "wonderful" experience. Big 2 on the PMP. I've found it to be very helpful post-AF. However, I found the Syracuse program to be crap...didn't prep me to pass the exam. Some of it may be my fault for treating it like a CBT, but still. (The exam is no joke...don't expect to pass without a lot of studying). I did a 1-week Boot Camp for $2K. Passed the test first try. Consider the Boot Camp + $500 exam fee + yearly PMI membership to be an investment in yourself. PMP + MBA + military = $$$. (And having Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple, etc on your resume/LinkedIn helps a lot as well).1 point
