Now that you are running a side business, do you you conduct business on the phone while walking in uniform, Lieutenant?3 points

We (AFRC 135’s) are going to 120’s in country, 5 months total orders. NAF confirmation, Wing, OG, etc. This is a huge issue to those of us that have fought for decades to keep the reserves as good as they can be. The OP started the thread IMNSHO to get the word out as anyone considering what used to be a good gig in the early 00’s is now maybe not such a good deal. But seriously- who the eff are you to tell people to ‘GTFO’ a forum because we are bringing attention to an idiotic policy that will be catastrophic to squadrons that we love? Heads up to people on this thread. There was an mfr to raise the upt age from 30 to 33. To those who are age critical that gives you extra time to apply to units now. MFR for UPT Age Limit 33.pdf3 points

If you have to choose between the two because of start date conflicts...get your foot in the door with the airlines. The af is hurting for pilots and there will likely be plenty of opportunities to get back into the ftu at a later date.2 points

In U-2 News: former U-2 pilot and 1 RS/CC, Mike "Sooch" Masucci, became an astronaut yesterday. For those that know Sooch, I'm sure we'd all agree that VG picked the perfect guy for this role, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. NASA should have picked him for the Shuttle when they had the chance. https://www.ladbible.com/news/news-amazing-footage-shows-virgin-galactic-pilots-soar-into-space-20190223 He becomes the 2nd U-2 pilot in to space... and the 1st to go to space after earning the U-2 Solo Patch.2 points

Yep. It's the 30s and 40s where it gets to be problematic.2 points

I was walking across the parking lot at NAS Fort Worth JRB and "got pulled over" by what passes for security and informed of the new rule saying no walking and talking on my phone. If there ever was a clue that there were too many people making rules without real jobs that enhanced our mission to kill people and break their stuff, this was it.1 point

Wow, I haven't been on this forum in months and I randomly decided to log on today and you posted this 30 minutes earlier. It's like an omen. 😂 I'm almost 30 and had thrown in the towel on this. Looks like it's time to start back up!1 point

https://www.defensenews.com/interviews/2019/02/27/us-air-force-chief-on-the-f-35-quarterback-new-and-improved-f-15-and-future-of-light-attack/ What’s going on with the light-attack program? We’ve been very consistent about the strategy from the beginning. First and foremost, this is all about allies and partners. The National Defense Strategy says that we’re going to invest and increase our relationships with current allies and partners, and build more allies and partners. And because so many are fighting violent extremism at their borders, this was our approach to say: “OK, how do we support the National Defense Strategy by building a weapon system?" We learned in the past that if it’s good enough for us to buy, it tends to be good enough for our allies and partners. And many of the international air chiefs, tell me: “Hey, Dave, I got this going on in my country, I’ve got to deal with it; I want to join you in a fight, but I can’t afford F-16s, I’m never going to get F-35 and I need something else because my weapon systems I’ve got right now are getting older. What do you have to offer me?” The second thing is that as we build the Air Force we need, I have no place I can go within the United States Air Force to trade away capacity to build light attack. It has to be additive. It does do some things inside the Air Force that are very helpful, but it’s not a requirement inside the Air Force. This is a requirement for our allies and partners that we’re working towards. So given those two fundamental assumptions, we opened up to industry to this experiment. And I cannot thank the two companies that joined us enough for their partnership today because they’ve been extraordinary and we’ve learned a ton. Some countries may be better to have an unmanned option; some countries would be better to have a rotary-wing option; some countries want to do a fixed wing but turboprop; some countries want to do fixed wing but turbojet. So we were able to start experimenting with just one of those. So now what can we do to expand the experiment to look at, what is the right mix? And how do we bring allies and partners in right now with us — not just periodically parachuting in? For us to issue an RFP would set an expectation that we’re ready to go to selection when we’re still working our way through what the strategy would be. That would be, in my mind, a bit irresponsible. I talked to both the CEOs, and we want to make sure we strengthen the partnership we already built as we go forward.1 point

If you want to fly as seldom as possible, WB reserve is your best bet. Those guys can go multiple months without flying. Of course it throws your "shortest legs possible" requirement out the window but, hey, nothing's perfect. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk1 point

I know a former U-2 guy that got 173 credit hours of flying in January... at about $170/hour.1 point

That is an interesting question I've never considered. I'm really having trouble thinking of one. Only thing I can come up with is the scenario is that you like where you live, don't want to commute, and there is a regional domicile you can drive to, very quickly. That's about it. Even with that, regional contracts are at the whim of the majors they contract with, so that domicile could disappear at a moment's notice. I agree with Social about travel benefits. You'd always have higher priority on your own metal anyway, if you wanted to travel beyond where your regional goes. If travel is your thing, there is a lot to be said for cargo, and getting miles for deadhead. ACMI for that matter. Or big picture, I make enough money that I can just buy the damn tickets.1 point

Just wanted to update everyone, got picked up by my home F-16 unit today. Was the only one to be selected! Just wanted to thank everyone on here for all the tips and tricks throughout the whole process, helped tremendously. Cheers!1 point

Hell, you just described my short tenure in the CAF (we called it CBP but it's the same shit), and the morale crush that lead up to 2007, and we all know what happened then. Now granted, I was an interloper in that community since day one (had zero intention of flying heavies any longer than necessary) but still, that make-work shit was also antagonizing the lifers too. I didn't join the flying vocation because I wanted to fly airliners, so the opportunity costs of stay/go were not the same for me. That said, it is certainly tough to reconcile this daily hassle when cats with my flying resume are getting paid $138/credit-hr second year plus B-fund and not getting sweat about pee tests, PME finger wagging, dealing with the "what are you stealing from me today?" patronizing environment wrt participation requirements and daily schedules (aka BONA FIDE Active Duty), let alone special bad deal projects like these TSP/CBP or worse, invol IA make-work pedestrian deployments. Thing is, it doesn't appear to me that they have any intention on giving an inch in the manner in which they go about these taskers. And I'll be honest, if we can't get traction on these QOL issues in THIS civilian hiring environment, then seriously, wtf are we even doing discussing this. It appears as though there's enough Reservists out there who are content with their lot, if Wings seem to be able to continue to peddle green manning slides to the Command in the midst of these taskers. I suppose I can see the fighter guys eating bad deals to "still get to fly a fighter". I certainly had zero intention of behaving the same when I was fighting perennial vocational-narcolepsy at the helm of a bomber or nuke vault. I can't speak for the MAF guys but I figure the dynamics would be similar, especially with airline job in hand. To each their own, but I don't see things getting better, if they haven't done so already in present hiring.1 point

Ok? I’m not sure what being 15 has to do with this. The thread is about women being drafted into the military. And I provided an example of women in the military. But I’ll let you know how I feel when my non-existent daughter turns 15 and doesn’t get drafted or join the military...because she’s 15.1 point

Maybe it’s not representative of society at large but I’ve had co-ed bathrooms and showers on multiple deployments and it’s been a complete non-issue.1 point

To be clear... this is not sport bitching. These are legitimate concerns and frustrations being aired by people who are doing a job they love with people they consider a family. However everyone has a limit and 120s in the 135 AFRC will hit that limit for a lot and there will be a noticeable result. How many of you out there already have problems getting an AFRC 135 tanker for a local, much less a drag, when you need one? How much harder will that be after 120s are a reality? Blanket statements, stating that military flying is the best way to a pilot career is a biased statement and poor advice. Anyone rushing for a UPT slot needs to understand that the pilot job market has changed drastically in recent years, and what was true yesterday doesn’t make it true today. The pilot job is a true market with all the fluctuations and emotions driving it that move other markets. The only constant is change. I can promise you that the likelihood of your sponsored squadrons tempo today won’t be the same as when your return from training 2+ yrs later. Doesn’t mean you should run the other way! The reality of today, is if you want to be an airline pilot this MAY be a good path for you but then again it MAY not be. You will have to determine that for yourself by seeking conversations with honest opinions. And have enough wisdom to realize that a person further into life has a different worldview of someone in their 20s without a wife or kids. Now back to 120s please.1 point

Mids pls delete all garbage not concerning the KC-135 120-day deployments. This is still developing, and there will be updated to talk about once the final message drops. Everybody else, make a new thread. GTFO here-1 points

No justification needed. If this forum turns into a free-for-all like APC, I’ll be gone forever tonight. For now it still provides some useful information in between sport b!tching by maintaining a usefully organized & searchable narrative. It’s not rocket surgery.-1 points
