Thats because as the military tries to get back to that and out of the COIN mindset you’ve got very senior people at this point who only ever saw what that looked like as a 1LT if at all making decisions on what that training looks like. I watched a full bird Col tell the OPFOR to change what ADA they had in an exercise because Greyhound presented too many problems. Like day 1-3 we couldn’t support his ground elements because they wouldn’t give us what we needed. Day 4-6 everything’s awesome because these ZSU-23’s are a cake walk.... There are way to many senior military leaders who think it’s more important to keep replaying the scrimmages they know they can win and shine in the “look how awesome my guys are.... I made that happen,” game.3 points

Most of the higher levels of AF leadership come from the CAF. It is my oppinion that building partner relationships is one of the weaker competencies of the CAF community. I say that having worked on two combined staffs as a CAF background myself. CAF leaders simply dont get the international exposure early in their career and by the time they hit the operational levels they are programmed to believe the USAF can go it alone. I can't count the number of times I've done a combined RED FLAG and listened to bemoaning that our PN Air Forces were going to hold us back, limit our TTPs, or otherwise detract from the exercise. There is no excitement to build those relationships. Simply put, I'm not sure this priority will change in the near future. (Disclaimer: I'm not saying this is everyone in the CAF, there are exceptions. This is just my perception of a generalization as a whole.)2 points

That’s the crux of why fans are mad about this season’s writing. Even though the GOT world gives writers the ability to explain away physically impossible plot tools (the scorpions, fast traveling) using “magic”, they choose to ignore both physics and magic.2 points

Anything is possible...never say never. I did just exactly that...but, it’s not the way the system normally works. Lots of “luck”, timing, and a $&@“ loaf of work the AF didn’t ever deserve, but the people did...and also being kinda awesome. Probably mostly awesome. Everyone is “hand picked” for their DO position. ~Bendy2 points

Proving once again that shoe-clerk is a state of mind, not an AFSC.2 points

To be clear, I’m not arguing the merits for or against this idea. Fact is, it’s taking hold, and it won’t be going away. Regardless of what AFSOC wanted, there is a solid argument for more highly capable crews in SOCOM, and that was the one shot at relevancy for AF CSAR. They failed to seize the moment because old school though prevailed both on the rotary and fixed sides. If I were a betting man, I wouldn’t put money on AF CSAR being in it for the long haul anymore. At least not how we recognize it today. They need to adapt, accept more mission sets, and realize the AF’s way of doing PR, CSAR, is becoming obsolete in a resource scarce and A2AD environment. Found it. AFPC can’t guarantee a payback ADSC from Initial qual if you’re that close to retirement.1 point

Well, if it makes y'all feel better, I'm not in a DO position, and the OG/CC looked at me like I had a dick on my forehead when I asked if DO was a possibility after leaving my current job.1 point

Bragging. You and Pawnman should just get room and leave the rest of us out if it. Plenty of us as an O-4 DO in a flying squadron right now. You’re definitely not “special” or “hand-picked”1 point

Apply for a command board? Or who gives a shit? While I don’t know what you’d do at Edwards...probably that. Just get ready to drive 40 minutes to work and back, ~Bendy Edit: or go to Saudi if you like seeing the world and don’t mind being single...or like that flavor of life. Why am I even posting right now? Oh yeah, same reason so always do...check.1 point

I was a DO of an OSS, then asked to be a SQ/CC of a non flying GSU. Boss asked what I wanted to do after CC stint and I told him I wanted to fly again. Leave for new a/c qual in the fall. Helps me get current again and then I’ll make a decision on retirement then airline or go DSG and airline. Kinda nice to be able to have a little control over my future. Over 139 days triggers a PCS vs. TDY. Two ways around that are either have a specific waiver for that course (i.e. WIC) or have at least a 30 day break in formal courses, at which point you can be TDY up to 179 days. An example for the latter would be a couple months of TX, break, then AC qual course, totaling no more than 179 days. This was years ago, but I stayed on base during an extended TDY while getting BAH for the PDS my family lived at. One note is if you leave the Navy and move your family to Mildenhall, but DON’T sign into base prior to going to Altus, you will require SAF approval to receive Mildenhall OHA. This is an MFR request routed up the chain. The easiest answer is sign into Mildenhall (e.g. complete the PCS), then go TDY. If you go TDY enroute and stash your family in some other place (not Altus) you will have to do the MFR request to get their local BAH. Otherwise you will receive the “standard” rate, which is not that great.1 point

Other way to look at this is developing the brain trust of experience now to solve a problem that very well may be 10 years away. We got out Butts kicked in previous conflicts specifically because we didn’t look at emerging threats and continued to fight the last fight or ignore a real gap. Happened in the Air with MIGs over Vietnam, happened at Sea with minesweeping, and happened on land as we pursued the worlds best battle tanks and APCs for a standup fight while ignoring the IED. find the deadliest system we could encounter and match our best people against it until we figure out how to kill it. Otherwise F it let’s play the same exercises our dads played at NTC and Red Flag in the 80s and hope nobody buys or builds anything newer than SA-8/Mig29/T72. ...partial rhino resemblance? ..Not to assume Israel's Legacy Herk namesake. And it is grey...and can probably sneak up on some poor fool like a 'gray rhino'1 point

I always considered myself extremely lucky and felt very humbled to have been trained by some of the guys who flew this mission. Getting to listen to their stories first hand during sims was always an awesome experience.1 point

Have you ever had anyone go outside the flying world and become a DO as an O-4? For example, I was handpicked for my DO position.-1 points

Reddit users meet with CMSAF So, those same Redditors who asked questions during the AMA were invited to the Pentagon to talk face-to-face with Chief Wright. This link is a summary from one of the attendees.-1 points

I asked AFPC what can I do next because I don't feel challenged enough in my DO position. Everything just feels really slow. I was offered Staff, C-12s to Saudi, or Edwards. They noted I have 3 short tours already and asked if I was married. I am single going on 19 years. The functional didn't specify why, but I can't crossflow to another MWS. I'm on a 3 year stab tour, but AFPC said I can leave after 2 years. I just need my non rated CC's blessing. Figure I would ask her in a few months. AFPC needs a response by Jan 2020.-2 points
