  1. Hey man, the bandwagon is going the other way right now

  2. I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I sure wish even half this level of scrutiny would have been levied on the previous President when he was candidate and then during 8 years in office. Bill Ayers, IRS targeting, Fast and Furious, pallets of cash sent to Iran, Hillary selling uranium, unconstitutional Obamacare changes, etc etc. Those are just a few off the top of my head. The disparity is disgusting and it should enrage any American citizen. I’m all for holding leadership accountable, but accountability should be equitable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  4. As a follow up, for anyone who’s having trouble accepting/can’t sleep at night with the thought of such a toxic and dishonest leader in our ranks, have no fear. The incoming AFSOC/CC is well known for 3 things: 1. Interpersonal skills generally associated with people on the spectrum. 2. An intense dislike of pizza, Santa, kittens, and pornography. and perhaps most importantly 3. FIRING THE SHIT out of anyone he deems an incompetent or lacking in integrity (the CAT-5 incident mentioned above being the one round off paper in an otherwise very tight shot group over 25+ years). Slife won’t give a fuck how many times scissor me timbers has been yelled or what level of diversity is represented, he’ll can her ass quicker than Clark Griswold climaxes over the thought of Light Attack in the USAF if he thinks she’s dishonest. It’ll probably work itself out.

  5. No, I was more referring to your vast knowledge of the courtroom. Or, more likely, lack thereof.

  7. Leave reg mainly. It can be mitigated, but you still have touch work every 4ish days (depending on how you swap alert) to stay stay legal. Other than that, as long as you've done the proper paperwork like Smokin mentioned, I haven't seen any good/logical reason why someone couldn't do this. I've had a few leadership types at DAL quote things like AirGuardian mentioned, as well as a few other minor things which are all totally bogus. What it boils down to is there were a few management types that just can't stand the thought of dudes being paid by two masters. Sadly, the worst one (now removed from that position) is a former AF Reserve pilot. On the other hand, I don't understand why you'd want to ruin the best gig going (part-timer) by trying to work both gigs full time....WAY too much work!

  8. No one in the Gunship community that I’m aware of has anything bad to say about her as a leader. She did a good job at the 4th and several people, male and female alike, consider her a mentor. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  11. I’m truly amused every time I hear some sort of blame shifted to seeing/not seeing IR strobes and how apparently that is the big discriminator that makes or breaks good CAS tactics in the AF. The premier attack helicopter on the planet cannot see and does not care about IR strobes. As they routinely execute CAS and CCA from altitude and standoff as was intended from ranges that require the gunner to build and develop SA without it maybe that’s not the crutch to be leaning on. Also they can’t do better than an 8 digit grid in slaving to a given grid/target. Yes, this incident was entirely a failure on the idea of CAS being and easily thrown together action. CAS is supposed to be integrated in detail. Detail is something completely lacking in our modern 24/7 bus schedule version of building an ATO to support the coin fight. I doubt the crew even had a CONOP of the mission they were supporting much less a scheme of maneuver.

  12. The media is tracking this, they could make a whole lot of hay out of it if they want to. Thankfully they didn’t see the negative Obama patches I’ve seen floating around. The libs starting kicking out ROTC programs from universities in the 90’s due to don’t ask don’t tell, of course the more liberal colleges obliged (I got caught in the middle of it, college I wanted to go to kicked ROTC out). All that was left was ROTC detachments a conservative schools, 25 years later you get a lot of more conservative officers running your Air Force. I’m not complaining, im in that group, but the “chickens” have definitely come home to roost.

  13. Nothing...but that’s not why we do what we do (which of course I know you know that and aren’t implying otherwise). Of course the irony is not lost on me when some chief who hasn’t fought a second in his life gets a bronze star on his way out of CENTCOM. I had to argue directly to the one star wg/cc at BAF why the JTAC I wrote a MSM for deserves it...official recognition is broke and that was the day that cemented my decision to go Guard (certainly not the only reason, just the 1069th reason).

  14. You guys are both right in some respects. As of just a few years ago, the hubris is quite well. I knew gunships would be a rough fit when I got orders there (rock bottom on my dream sheet) and frankly struggled throughout much of my 3 years in the assignment. So I'm likely as far away from a knee-jerk gunship apologist as anyone who spent significant time in the community would be. That said, I don't recall any occasion where we did not have SIGNIFICANTLY better SA than everyone else, despite being saddled with equipment as ostensibly aged and inadequate as we had. Mark1 isn't a very popular figure on the board right now, but his points about the USE of the equipment on the gunship vs newer/fancier installations is spot on. Without knowing much detail on AC-J development, I'd hope and expect that it's a marriage of newer tech, similarly rigorous training, and maybe a moderation of the overarching "we're awesome, everyone else sucks" mentality. Cheers

  15. The answer is training....lots and lots of training. The gunpig is not exactly a human factors ergonomic masterpiece. The AC-130H had the FCO and Nav on the flight deck but isolated form the pilots by a blackout curtain, the sensor operators and EWO were down stairs in a booth. The AC-130U has the NAV, FCO, EWO and sensors operators all downstairs in the BMC...yet somehow both platforms trained their way to excellence. I am not bashing the Buff...just one data point early in the war, I have a second data point but no need to dogpile. These are great Americans and they have since professionalized their contribution. In the end the thing that typically makes the U.S. military stand out from the rest is not the platform but the people and the training. Train like you fight and fight like you train...joint CAS can be a beautiful thing.
