  2. That a C-5 person of any rank is tied to JFE definitely belongs in this thread. All MAF is not equal, nor representative... just like the CAF. Chuck

  3. The 0-6 acting air boss (C-5 Wing queen) at JFE for the WIC...first thing she mentions to the soon to be WIC grads is how she doesn’t like the grooming standards (referring to the moustsches). No wonder the CAF doesn’t think highly of the MAF.

  4. In the mid 90s, the USAF decided the B-1 was too hard to maintain and gave them to 2 ANG units. They were embarrassed that the Guard brought the MC rate way up. On Sept 10, 2001, they announced that McConnell would get KC-135s (they went away 5 years later) and Robbins moves over to help with JSTARS. The attacks on the US the next day didn’t change any minds- we retired 30 jet with the stated goal of using the savings for upgrades on the remaining jets. The B-1 is an extremely capable jet that was never resourced or maintained adequately. So now we will retire them to buy a new, complex bomber that will get the same half assed support going forward. Great plan Air Force

  5. Shouldn't have been that big of a surprise. Our (ANG) mx force is ridiculously experienced and skilled.

  6. DEROS and your current career field should not matter when it comes to this board. Someone lied to you last year. I got confirmation on this from both my assignments officer and the board GS-13.

  8. I was fortunate to partner with three other dudes on a Lancair “Legacy” as a mere LTJG, and after that partnership ended I recently purchased an RV-6 with my brother after I pinned on LT. He enjoys the plane when I’m on deployment, and I get to fly it when I’m in the US. General aviation allowed me to double my overall flight time last calendar year and introduced me to a whole new set of people I would never otherwise have known.. If you are at all considering flying “recreationally” before, during, or after the military you will not regret it!

  9. If you don't want to fly helos, I would recommend focusing on the ANG, AFRES, and active duty USAF. A significant percentage of student naval aviators track to helos (this includes USN and USMC), whereas in the Air Force, a student typically has to request them specifically and there may/may not be a slot available. In the Air Force, your options are plentiful. This is nice as a T-6 student when you realize that either A.) the rigors of high performance flying is awesome and you want to take it to the next step in the T-38, or B.) you realize that throttling back a bit and flying a heavy around the world with a crew is your cup of tea. Both are great lifestyles, and the Air Force is going to let you stay in the cockpit the longest (probably for most of your career, if you want it that way). From talking to USN/USMC bros, it's far more difficult to stay in flying assignments as your career progresses. Good luck!

  10. I'll take "Contract A-4's" for $800, Alex.

  11. I'd say that most guys are interested recreational flying but are too cheap to put up the cash to fly. Here are a few RVs at a fly in, two air force pilots and a Army pilot.

  12. Looks interesting, but it'll have a tough time beating Rush as the premier motor racing movie!

  15. Highwaymen on Netflix was pretty damn entertaining. Costner does a really good job at being an old dude with a gut, and the ambush scene on Bonnie and Clyde is freakin aggressive.

  16. And the very worst people I’ve worked for have been crossflow dudes. The point? As was said, Heuristics are bullshit; judge the individual. *break break* ... and curtail the Phoenix Reach program. You want to fix shit in AMC then stop the fixation on guys who know little about a lot, and start building expertise. While there’s value in having SOME breadth, save the generalism for the generals. AMCs obsession with breadth baffles me (and pretty much everyone outside AMC). I’ve watched guys my entire career pursue “broadening” over expertise - and actually tout how little they know about how many things as some kinda strength... THAT is bullshit (and there are more than a few nauseating general officers out there spewing the same nonsense). Truly oblivious and out of their depth... When the balloon goes up you don’t call in the generalists. Chuck

  19. Okay my question might be a little dull but my question is genuine. I have been doing research but I am kind of stuck on a point. So my question is what are your suggestions for schools for flight training and particularly ones that offer a bachelors degree? UND, Embry Rittle, and Bridgewater is all out of my state and I don't see the point of going out of state, if I can find a college in state that would be much more affordable. Im in Virginia. Also another thing I have been researching is whether I should join first then go to college or join later out of college? And will they still pay the tution? What are my options cause I can't seem to make up my mind on this part either. Thanks for your help.
