The day after that goes into effect is when it comes to light 98% of the military is gay. Who knew. Of course that’ll piss off all the C-model drivers because their niche is being threatened and now they’ll just be seen as mainstream.3 points

I don't believe In-Res IDE in of itself means a thing-big blue doesn't give a crap about what you learn at whatever IDE program (unless maybe you do a fellowship at the White House/Congress/Pentagon). All big blue cares about is that you were identified as the top 25% of your year group. The AF doesn't consider my masters degree from AFIT as IDE in res because I wasn't identified as a school select when I completed it. If I was a school select, I could have received deliberate development credit for the degree. It's not about learning the information, but about a stratification. In res IDE credit used to be a way to quickly identify that strat, but it sounds like with more programs that give that credit (remember when AFPAK hands were supposed to be the top 10%, get IDE credit, and fast track to promotion...), there's another decoder ring floating around with how to ID that strat.2 points

Yeah both FAOs received in-res credit on SURF and still passed over. Besides FAOs being undervalued... 1. not all FAO jobs are equal. 2. part time FAOs don't help promotion.2 points

I think the frustration is that that the stratification happens when you're a senior captain, and if you're slightly below average or a late bloomer, well, you're fate has already been written and you just don't know it. On the flip side, if someone is on the golden path, they're pretty much set unless they are a complete piece of crap, and even then they may get to wreck havoc as a sq/cc before the AF figures out they are toxic1 point

I've done both. Most of the questions are similar, but in a joint board interview they will ask you your preference of airframe. I'd be prepared to answer honestly while keeping in mind that there will be representatives from each airframe on the interviewing panel. Focus on the reasons why you want to fly your first choice rather than focusing on reasons you don't want to fly the other options represented, if that makes sense. In other words, don't shit all over the planes/squadrons that aren't of interest to you. Good luck!1 point

Or you’ll be TDY enough that your expensive Seattle residence will be vacant half the year. As a new guy, your primary concern should be being nearby and available. Trying to work only 2-3 days and commuting an hour (or more) on the I-5 to live near downtown on LT pay would not be a smart financial decision.1 point

Bingo. I knew a guy who was selected to teach ACSC for three years. But because he wasn't a school select, they wouldn't give him in-residence credit for the year he did ACSC in order to prep him for the job of teaching the class. Counter-arguement - there are a LOT more people who get picked up for IDE in residence than get picked up for an FAO Fellowship.1 point

Interesting. I think it may have been a little more complicated than that. FAOs in the 2005 year group and on were considered for in-residence credit if they accomplished a certain combination of rigorous deliberate development which includes language training, postgraduate school training, 6 months of in-region immersion, and ACSC in correspondence. Not everyone got it. From 2007 on everyone should get in-res credit since the program has been restructured. Now if you’re saying these guys got the in-res credit as reflected on their SURF, but got passed over, then I am a bit surprised, but not shocked. Few people know what FAOs bring to the table. That, and follow-on jobs can vary greatly. Will be interesting to see what the stats are for this board and also if FAO promotions really tank in the competitive category system.1 point

FWIW, there are at least 2 FAOs that didn't make the cut. The board was supposed to count Monterey as in-res IDE for the FAOs.1 point

Cool I know one of the guys ATZ with a DP who didn’t get promoted. I don’t understand this at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Some of you may remember some of my story over the last few years. Quick recap, even tho I was a TPS grad/instructor nav, I was RIFd in 2014. I separated, became a GS and IMA, but then had it all reversed a year later through the BCMR (basically I should have never even been eligible to meet the RIF board). I knew when I accepted coming back that I was likely eternally screwed. I got lucky and I was put in charge of a new unit and got Sq/CC equivalent on my OPR/PRF. But that didn't overcome my weird looking records with a year missing "per SECAF", and not enough strats earlier on. My IPZ was moved one year behind my peers and I was still passed over, and then passed over again last year. But in the meantime I managed to get myself into a PhD slot, so I at least had that going for me. Well, against all odds, I made it this year! Not sure what the tipping point was, although I hoped it meant even more of my APZ bros were getting selected (from the stats it doesn't sound like it). So I know it doesn't help the folks who didn't make it this year, but there is hope out there! I know I'm not the typical example, but I had enough "negative" stuff in the record that I didn't think anything would overcome it (and neither did any of senior leaders I knew, and I only ever managed to get Ps because they were afraid even a DP wouldn't be enough). I am surprised there isn't more discussion here of what is shaping up to be the most important election cycle of my lifetime. I don't think the difference in the two political parties has ever been more wide. Democrats are offering everything under the sun in an effort to snag voters. Free healthcare for illegals. What happens when word gets out that illegal immigrants will get that free health care? More seriously sick illegals start showing up. Disease shows up. That will just add to the burden that is already being placed on this country. Homelessness is a huge problem in this country. Look at what is going on in California right now. Where do you house the additional hundreds of thousands of unemployed and homeless people who have crossed the border illegally? 100 billion dollars for blacks that are living in poverty, unemployed or underemployed who don't have the means to buy a house. This is meant to close the race/wage gap? The government has tried this before with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And my guess is, regardless of race, if you are living in poverty, are unemployed or underemployed, your credit reflects that. Are we really going to give folks with bad credit and no job/low paying jobs 25 grand to buy a house they don't qualify for or can't afford? And is this not the definition of racism? Giving government funds to a specific race? And see my statement above about the homeless illegals. We will soon be giving them money to buy houses too. Free college tuition? No student debt? I think this one is brilliant on the part of the Democrats. They know that our education system indoctrinates young folks with liberal views. Especially, our colleges. The more young people they can get into that indoctrination system, the better. Aside from that, a bachelors degree becomes even more worthless because everyone has one and tuition rates skyrocket. Reparations for descendants of slaves. Reparations for gays. How does that work? How much and to whom? If the check is big, I bet you see a lot of new gay folks. I am not saying I would slob a knob for 50k but I know some folks who would. Medicare for all? Kicking 140 million people off of their current healthcare? Sh!t, it wasn't that long ago that the Dems were running on "keeping your healthcare and doctor". That sure changed quick. The good thing is that your average American is not on board with any of this. The only folks who are, already vote Democrat. These policies aren't swinging any votes to the left or away from Trump. So far, Trump has been guaranteed reelection. Rest assured, there are people hard at work right now working on the next fabricated scandal to take Trump down. It'll be even bigger than the Russian collusion story. They are just waiting on the right time to drop it. It'll be 6-9 months before the election and perfectly timed. That is all they've got. Free sh!t and made up scandals.1 point

Doubt it. Who they’re from matters in the sense of that person’s credibility (even if only perceived) gleaned from their position to an extent, but also how well they know you/I think they can accurately write you a LOR that isn’t canned. You don’t need a letter from a general to get interviewed. Review your cover letter and resume...those two things need to be well written and sell you. They are generally the first two things that guys skim; if they don’t catch my attention in a positive way, higher pK your app is tossed to the “relook at later” pile vs. the “give this man an interview!” pile.1 point

That needs to be squashed ASAP. Offer to take the FM on a TDY and see if the perspective changes. This is not how an ANG unit should function. Full timers forget their job is to SUPPORT the part timer. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app1 point

This "new normal" of guilty-until-innocent-but-still-treated-guilty is in large part a result of politics becoming team sports, where winning is the desire, instead of compromise. I think... How many Republicans defended Al Franken when he was drummed out for nonsense? How many excuse Trump when he says things that are obviously false? Both sides are doing this because we've prioritized winning over the truth. I don't think it's a new phenomenon, but the internet, social media, and the 24 hour news cycle has made it worse. Each side is convinced the other is stacking the deck, so they take their wins wherever they can, even when it's disingenuous.1 point

There's a thing in fiction called suspension of disbelief. Basically, tell us the rules of your world, and then follow them. In Game of Thrones, it's made clear early on that dragons and black magic exists. It was only recently made clear that the pirates had heat seeking scorpion bolts.1 point

Piling on, I have the Citizen watch ("previous version") as well; it's my second one (I had the version before that, too); when it's time to replace it, I'll likely get the one that JeremiahWeed linked as its replacement....1 point
