  1. Never have flown a Super Cub... yet. I'll get some more pics of the Cub and post them. The restoration was done by a place at PVF (Placerville, CA), and is supposedly a well-known place. The guy that bought it is a former U-2 guy who is meticulous about his aircraft, and keeps them in top shape. He's got a Ryan PT-22. And his Stearman was previously owned by the head of the Stearman Restoration Society (or whatever it is called). As you might expect, it looks better than the day it rolled out of Wichita. I'm lucky that 1). he is allowing me to fly his beautiful plane, and 2) that he is allowing me to fly it after seeing how I flew it with him on my checkout. It wasn't particularly stellar. I haven't flown the U-2 in 58 months. I'd be way more confident in my abilities in it tomorrow than I am in the Cub. But the learning curve is a great thing. Loving it!

  2. Jealous... I’ve flown the super cub And hands down the best flying I’ve done. There’s something about doing touch and go’s at a grass field, with the windows open, and the sun setting.

  3. Won’t release your guys to staff when that is an assignment that is still a heavy discriminator on the promotion board.

  4. Aside from the pic itself...I think the Twitter handle name is just as funny. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  5. Have a buddy with a 160hp Super cub on alaskan bush wheels that I get to putz around in once in a while. That is an amazing aircraft. Its a breeze to fly and is extremely capable with the 160hp on it. He'll put it down out on the bay when it freezes over and go ice fishing. Definitely recommend flying one, low and slow. I think being able to open the whole side of the airplane is the greatest. They also own a Stearman....Keep it in a hangar at the house coupled with a 2500' grass strip. Talk about heaven. Haven't been lucky enough to go up in that yet though.

  6. Man I'm jealous, that's a good buddy to have! The panel of the Cub makes it evident that he takes good care of his planes. Post pics of the Stearman if you have some. Hoping to acquire one down the road. Was his Stearman owned by the current President of the Stearman Restores association? That dude is a real under achiever...he was a Navy rescue swimmer, then Seal, then decided to be a 160th SOAR pilot and now flies crop dusters. https://www.westpointcoh.org/interviews/a-career-filled-with-detours-from-seal-to-night-stalker https://readyfortakeoffpodcast.com/rft-284-navy-seal-cropduster-mike-rutledge/

  7. I want that to happen just so it can be the final dagger in the heart of all the “Tomcat 21!” *Sploooge* Fanboys. If we can get a Hornet shooting down a Flanker and a Tomcat in the same movie the internet will explode. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  8. I solo'd a 65 hp 1940 Piper Cub the weekend before last. Finally... flying a Cub. And it is spectacular. Restoration was done 20 years ago... and when my friend bought it, only 180 hours had been put on it since the restoration. Planning to fly it a fair amount. IMG_3152.HEIC

  11. Not how it worked when I had a seat at the table and nor should it work the way you describe. The #1 Major in the wing when I was the DS was a 2nd year Major (pilot), and he was pretty damn sharp, but was not an IDE select on his board. The #2 Major was the lead JAG and he was definitely a sharp officer...but also wasn't meeting his IPZ board for a couple years. I also saw 2nd year Captains getting a wing strat, and it's not because they were being discussed as a future GO. Only a very small percentage of CGOs will ever be a Wg CC and a much even smaller percentage will be a General. I'm not saying that senior leaders can't (and don't) highlight these individuals early on, but they only take a few of the top strats. Most top strats are earned by just above average officers...and a lot of it is luck/timing. Case in point, the MSG at a UPT base has a much smaller pool of officers compared to the OG, yet the MSG gets a higher/disproportionate amount of wing strats compared to the OG--I've seen this happen with my own eyes. The problem is that the OG doesn't completely want to piss off the MSG and tell him that more than half of his rated guys are better than the SFS Captain, so they "spread the wealth around" and the slighty above average SFS Captain gets a wing strat and the slighty above average pilot doesn't even get mentioned. Now all things being equal, which one eventually has a better chance at making O-5? Bingo...

  12. I think the frustration is that that the stratification happens when you're a senior captain, and if you're slightly below average or a late bloomer, well, you're fate has already been written and you just don't know it. On the flip side, if someone is on the golden path, they're pretty much set unless they are a complete piece of crap, and even then they may get to wreck havoc as a sq/cc before the AF figures out they are toxic

  13. For all the young guys getting their first look at school, the best gouge I can give you is to be prepared to be really pissed off when you see some of the dweebs that make it over good bros.
