  1. Yes...and shockingly, got picked up 1 APZ with a 5/10 push line and P on the PRF. Sometimes there is justice in the system.

  2. I am officially a has-been. My fini flight was this morning, retirement ceremony this afternoon. Bittersweet to say the least. Getting out of that jet for the last time was a bigger deal than I was expecting. It's been a good ride - 21 years in and 18.5 of the last 19 flying the Mighty-Mighty (quick MC-12 stint in AFG back in '11). I haven't been posting much, but it's about to get a lot less. Thanks to all the warriors out there; keep fighting the good fight. Now I'm one of those guys that thank you for your service. I probably won't buy you lunch though - I'm still a cheap-ass airline pilot. Do your best to keep this place following it's roots - helping people in the fight (or trying to get there). Hasta-la-bye-bye. Evil

  3. To an extent I get what you’re saying. I don’t think all negative/refuting coverage is “fake news.” But mainstream news has completely fucked away some pretty serious stories. So much so that I have to now spend an hour or so digging through sources to double check them before making a conclusion. The number of times I’ve found BS is very troubling. Best I can determine, people are simply judging the number of outlets saying the same thing and thinking “if all of them are saying it, must be true.” If it’s on the NYT, Washington Post and CNN... then it’s basically fact. We desperately need to get comfortable saying “I don’t know, I’ll get back to you on that.” Or “I heard this, but I can’t verify it.” Instead I’m stuck trying to explain that Trump didn’t say “fine people on both sides” with regard to the white supremacists, while also simultaneously telling another person that Trump did in fact lie about the Portland sheriff endorsement.

  4. Last time we tried that was 2012. He lost to hostile media propagandists, a false narrative, and due to an accurate remark that was taken out of context.

  5. Congrats! Same story for me, although after telling me I was picked up my CC said “I know you had a grand plan but making rank tends to change things.” Not for me...still putting my family first and still getting out at 20.

  6. Also got picked up. Definitely relieved....the 20 and out plan remains unchanged.

  9. It doesn't. I thought I was clear that it's not an all-encompassing metric. However, at the moment we're lofting 2 incompetant idiots that are also human cesspools to the top of the two-party system with nearly perfect accuracy. Wouldn't it be a good start if we just went with 2 incompetant idiots that were mildly respectable human beings instead? As a side note, you should substitute somebody else for Mother Theresa in future rhetorical questions. She left a lot to be desired when it comes to morality.

  10. Since when does “being more human” whatever that means make you a good candidate to run the most successful and empathetic country in modern history. Mother Theresa and Ghandi were ideal humans, don’t think I’d want them making the important decisions tho. I hear this so often I can barely handle it—Trump is evil the other side states. He wasn’t that evil 4 yrs ago when you were inviting him onto your TV shows and staying in his resorts and hotels. As soon as he started playing the politics game and putting his foot down on things he became “evil”, and the mob media has gone to extreme lengths to portray him in that way. While yes I will consent Trump is a major asshole, needs to seriously learn how to play in the middle, be a little more decent and have some tact, but I don’t vote for someone based on if they’re nice people or if I like them, I vote based on the policies they’re wanting to implement and if I agree with them.

  11. And who are these actual proper journalists I should be following? Who are these amazing journalists who have better investigative resources than the entire US government at the behest of the Senate that resulted in an intelligence report with said "fake news findings" written by republican senators? Please I must know!

  12. Glad everyone lived, kudos to the Herk crew. As someone that refueled aircraft in the air, it's insane to me to think C-130s refuel fighters.

  14. Not to armchair quarterback but it looks like a shit hot job from the C-130 crew getting it down safe in a field. Good work!! 800mg of Motrin should work for shoulder pain if there are too many high fives.

  16. Again, let me say, this debate was ridiculous and both performed horribly, or probably failed to move the needle for anyone. Even Bernie Sanders, on Jimmy Kimmel, said it wasn’t a good night for America. I am too lazy to go back and find it, but one of the Trump fans said they liked his answers on climate change. I let it go at the time because I wanted more people to answer, but I would like to hear some reasons now for that specific callout. What about “we have to do whatever it takes to have ‘immaculate air and water” makes any sense or squares with any actions/policies coming out of this administration? That’s basically what he said, I summarized. Not only do the actions of his administration scream the exact opposite, but those words don’t lay out anything in terms of policy/future actions. So, are you just saying you’re happy with his answers because you feel climate change (something the DoD continues to list as one of the biggest threats to National Security) isn’t real, or did I miss something more specific when the two old guys were yelling at each other. Maybe Chris Wallace or Joe Biden spoke over him... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  17. I'd argue that Ghandi was a damned effective leader who faced some real significant challenges. Clearly he had some kind of leadership ability.

  18. I can't help you with Brandman, but here's some unsolicited advice from a has-been finding himself in a potentially tough spot. Get a degree employers will recognize and one that will be useful to you if/when you need it. I did like everyone else and wasted my time and money on an ERAU/Touro/Phoenix masters. Now I'm in a position where I would love to show an employer I can do stuff and I don't have a degree worth putting on a resume. I'd love to go back and tell my Capt self to spend a little extra time and get an MBA from a school everyone's heard of. ASU, Nebraska, FSU, Oklahoma State, CSU all have online MBAs. So you can't get a brick and mortar Harvard MBA. At least get something from a school an employer won't have to google (because they won't).

  20. We’ve missed you Chang. And as one of those “barrel-scrapers” vectored for MAJCOM staff, it would have been nice to have someone in a position of leadership explain the rules. The vast majority of us don’t ever get the secret decoder ring brief.

  21. It is another way to get an “across the board” unofficial stratification early in your career (first vector as Major-select). Ensures we keep our bottom of the barrel-scrapping officers from being considered for joint jobs (can only go one up & one down). Also serves to start delineating who truly has the potential to become an HPO. Learn the system, folks!

  24. I worked in a SOC (Security Operations Center, think of a NOSC with cyber) for a software company but recently was hired as a contractor on a MAF program. I will say cybersecurity, with education and experience in artificial intelligence, is a great sector to be in the new few decades. I'm currently applying for a doctorates program in aviation and space at Oklahoma State and I hope to use my cybersecurity knowledge with advanced persistent threats (APTs) with modern aircraft computing systems.

  28. CE guy here. FLEA’S words check. The money for barrier MX flows through CE channels. The CE squadron will often fund it out of pocket at bases where it is not authorized at the expense of other requirements. Extra cables are goodness to give you guys more divert options, but they are equally important to keep engineers trained on them. Arresting gear requires daily, monthly, and annual MX. The Airmen installing mobile arresting systems at a contingency location may have only touched them at tech school and a couple of exercises if they deployed from a base without barriers. A lot can go wrong on if you catch a cable that is installed or maintained incorrectly. Something to consider when you guys are running the AF someday.

  30. What I took from the debate, beyond the antics, was that Trump was generally optimistic about the country and Biden was pessimistic. Biden's tone to me was: America is jacked up and therefore needs more big government to intervene into everything." At least that's my impression. I'm sure Harris will echo the exact sentiment that Biden did: America is racist, America's economy is in the toilet, America's health care system is the worst on the planet, etc. And she'll need to reign back in the green new deal people that Biden stepped on. I was on the fence about whether or not I would even vote this time around. I'm definitely showing up to the polls after watching that. And I will certainly admit that Trump behaved like a child. For some reason that doesn't bother me anymore - a lot of politicians behave horribly and say horrible things and encourage horrible behavior.

  31. I don't think there's anything a rational person can take away from this debate other than trump being completely unhinged. His interruptions and constant riffing overshadowed any possible Biden missteps and was the absolute driver of chaos throughout the debate. No one is talking about joes policy stances, or his mental slips, or his refusal to denounce antifa because trump simply would not shut up. You know it's bad when you're the republican and the Fox News moderator is fed up with your antics. On top of that, Trump had a few good lines here and there and joe definitely tripped up a few times but it was all lost in the ever-present cacophony of his stream of consciousness jabs. Maybe this style would have worked to dominate a stage of 10 candidates early in a primary. Maybe it would have worked with a large audience with applause breaks. But this was not that. It was a one on one debate with clearly defined rules and no active audience to pander to. He ended up looking like an unruly toddler and that is THE story of the debate. You can say that this is just trumps schtick, and you'd be half right. But this was a uniquely bad showing and perhaps the schtick is getting old.

  33. SEF guy (not working this incident) and HC-130J guy here. I agree with this assessment. Left AR pod and #1 prop likey contacted the ground during the forced landing.

  34. Since the fuel is still leaking and assuming this pic was taken shortly after the incident, I would imagine the tank on the left wing separated on impact with the ground or soon there after with a prop blade coming off the #1 engine. The right side was probably strictly F-35 damage. Just my opinion, of course.

  35. Sort of. To his point, he is absolutely right. You are correct from a holistic point of view that 100K/yr is a small investment to save 33M. However, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul. The airfield portion of an airbase has something similar to a doc statement just like units do that specify what capabilities they are supposed to / not supposed to possess. These are usually codified in a base support plan and they are driven by the NAF or the MAJCOM. If AFMC or whatever NAF this base falls under don't have a requirement for arresting gear in the BSP, then SAA has no obligation to maintain the cables and they area using money that has been appropriated for other things to do that. In the BSP there are usually agreements with supported units though and this is where you would find something like 12AF or ACC giving X$/yr to support whatever function in case of whatever contingency.

  36. This next week is going to be many peoples high, and many peoples low. If you happen to be one of the latter, don’t despair. Not getting promoted doesn’t define you as a person, it is a big kick to the junk. However, dust yourself off and try to focus on what’s good about your situation, versus what could’ve been. Good luck folks.

  37. That’s a pretty incredible feat of airmanship, putting a -130 on the ground that well in an asymmetric thrust situation. Hopefully the Marines give that guy some serious recognition.

  38. Buddy of mine was flying the Navy helo that picked up the F-35 pilot. The dude walked to the helo from his parachute and was freaking out because he thought there was no way the C-130 could've kept flying. Incredible work by the aircrew to get this thing on the ground. *Edit* ATC audio as well. Around the 2:30 mark, the C-130 pilot sounds surprisingly calm for having just lost two of his four propellers. https://www.liveatc.net/recordings.php

  40. They both did terrible, there was no winner, only losers. I’m embarrassed for my country after that shit show. As far as voters, I don’t think last night moved any voters one way or the other...they both sucked so bad that no rational person would have watched that and thought, “yeah, I’m going to switch to B” or “well I was undecided, but now I’m voting for A.” If anybody thinks one side won, then you simply are experiencing your own confirmation bias towards who you were already going to vote for anyways. No minds changed.
