  4. We have age requirements for drinking, voting, signing contracts, etc. In recognition of the lack of decision making skills that might prevent you from doing something stupid. Sex change or hormone treatments? No worries. A 4 year old or hormonally challenged adolescent going through puberty has the rational mental capacity to judge a life altering decision.

  5. Autopilot in the jet kicks off sometimes too. Sometimes it's completely INOP **gasp** Should we scrap the entire concept because it isn't absolutely perfect? If I was trusting Tesla autopilot to transport my family, I'd do exactly what I do in the airplane. Monitor it. Trust but verify. Because I'm not an idiot. As for other drivers on the road, I would trust Tesla autopilot software over their awareness and reaction time 100 times out of 100. Do you live in a strange alternate reality where people are really courteous, attentive, skilled drivers? If so I would very much like to visit.

  7. I'm baffled that there's virtually no cost to filing a false report. If during the course of the investigation there's incontrovertible evidence the accusation was contrived, the legal consequences of the original accusation should be transferred to the person who falsely brought up the claim.

  8. Units differ. At least for us, local guys get an interview regardless of package (that’s the one perk they get). Off the street guys’ apps and face time get them the interview. Now everyone is at the interview as equals - interview performance is what gets the job. Our local guys performed extremely well at last year’s board, so we hired 3 of them. We’ve also passed on many local guys over the years, including some who have tried multiple times. While this doesn’t apply to every unit, there is not some secret huge leg up for the local guy.

  16. He really might be the worst CC I’ve personally heard of. Godspeed Spang bros. Don’t let the young guys give up, make sure they know this will pass and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Help reinforce this with awesome no-bob parties and max emphasis on tactical badassery at work. Edit: It goes without saying we don’t have the whole picture, and something likely happened as a precursor. But, this is a clear example of epically failing to deal with the problem appropriately. I don’t care if someone wore a Jerk MeHoff name tag TDY or the boss was gone when they named someone Eat a bag of dicks. Those are things that should be dealt with in ways other than full scorched earth on morale and traditions (of which are entirely clean in nature).

  18. @Royal I love flying the decathlon. Full aerobatics with good handling and performance, while also a nice VFR cruiser to go grab some lunch. I found it to be a good TW to learn in as well. My buddy also jumped out of it (STC for door off flight)...lots of fun to be had in that airplane. For reference, this is a ‘91 8KCAB. Hoping by summer of 22 to also have a Stearman. I rent 4 place airplanes when I want to take the whole family somewhere; not a lot of rental opportunity for the 2 seat “non-standard fun” airplanes. That was primary driver for why I’ve gone this route in GA vs. the traditional 4-place Cessna/Piper direction.

  19. Interesting note on that recent story about the Marine mentioned sharing naked photos within the unit. She makes a tiktok where she’s crying and talking about facing the accuser and all that. Turns out, the pictures he shared were from this girls only fans account (aka she made them herself for sale if you subscribe to her site for $4.99). The real part that pissed her off was all of this “exclusive content” was showed without people paying. What a world!

  20. Read my original comment is this thread: Pitt4401 made this comment: ”You forgot the part where people claimed the convicted was morally impeccable...while having a previously undisclosed love child.” I then replied: “Kind of irrelevant as to if one committed rape or not, right?” The whole reason we’re even talking about Wilkerson in this thread is because he was convicted of rape, and then the conviction was dismissed by Franklin. So again, discussing Wilkerson’s character on a completely different matter (cheating on his spouse, etc) is irrelevant as to whether or not he raped someone. Franklin dismissed the conviction because he said the evidence presented in the trial didn’t lead to a conviction. Now if we want to argue that point then that’s totally fine—I have yet to comment on whether or not I believe Franklin was right (not to mention I haven’t seen the evidence presented in the trial). But bringing up the fact that that dude later was shown to be a dirt bag should have zero relevance on whether or not that guy raped someone earlier.

I have tons of respect for Rep. Kinzinger for sticking to his principles, ignoring the conspiracy theories, and fighting for the soul of conservatism. The GOP needs as many Adam Kinzingers as they can find.

  23. Question for our fighter pilots. I personally hate to see precious F22’s being used to intercept Bears off Alaska. Homeland defense does not need LO. Would not an F-15X be a better choice for that mission than a single engine F-16?

  25. Well Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) is slowly stripping the rights of the accused slowly away to try to gain more convictions. Currently, Article 32 hearings are nothing more than a paper trial that lasts maybe 5-10 minutes (mine lasted about 10 minutes). The complaining witnesses (defense name for victims) don't have to testify anymore at an Article 32 hearing, thus not subject to be cross-examined and possibly have their testimony impeached. Regardless of what the investigating officers finds (for Art 120 offenses, it must be a JAG) and recommends, no convening authority in the USAF is not going to refer the charges to a general court martial if a Art 120 charge is attached. Gillibrand will get her way of changing the UCMJ, or she'll continue to ruin senior officer's careers for making legitimate decisions within their authority, but against her wishes. Much like she did to the 3 AF/CC's career for overturning the verdict in the U.S. v. Wilkerson case.

  26. I'm not sure where you're driving but all I see on the road these days are compact SUVs and crossovers. If you exclude pickups, the top 3 selling vehicles in America for 2020 were compact SUVs: the rav4, the crv, and the equinox. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/wheels/news/best-selling-cars-suvs-pickups-2020/%3Famp You can't spec any of those three to be even remotely close to the level of luxury and tech a Tesla has. So the Tesla costs more. This is not difficult to understand. Tesla makes luxury electric cars with preposterous performance. So yes they're going to cost more and sell fewer total units than the companies making econo boxes. I will admit they're not for everyone and the infrastructure isn't full up in some parts of the country. But it's pretty cool that the premier electric car company in the world is American.

  27. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/02/man-who-refused-bow/618156/ “Kinzinger’s stance has earned him some critics. One of Trump’s fawning court pastors, Franklin Graham—the son of the prominent evangelical preacher Billy Graham—attacked the 10 Republicans who supported impeachment. “It makes you wonder what the thirty pieces of silver were that Speaker Pelosi promised for this betrayal,” Graham wrote on Facebook. “He said we took pieces of silver from Nancy Pelosi because—what?” Kinzinger asked me. “Trump is Jesus Christ? Christians have got to open their eyes and be like, ‘What is happening?’” ... “But while what happened to Kinzinger may be extreme, he is hardly alone; politics is placing stress on countless relationships among friends and family, and shattering more than a few. “Do you have any advice for people struggling to reach people they love at moments like this?” I asked. “What would you say on the interpersonal side of things? How can repair and reconciliation go forward?” “It’s a tough one,” Kinzinger conceded. “Because I say, on the one hand, try to have compassion for them; they’re brainwashed. It’s true, but I also know truthfully that if I’m talking to somebody that is saying what they’re saying and I know they’re brainwashed, it doesn’t help me look at them any better. I’m just being honest.” As we spoke, it became clear that Kinzinger was still trying to understand what’s going on beneath the anger and the hate, even as he has become its target. One clinical psychologist told me when the letter was published that Kinzinger was on the receiving end of a textbook cultlike response: remove yourself from the devil, cut the person off from the family, prove devotion to leader and mission.”

  30. In the past month the warhawks have also lost - Their hand signal/gang sign (used to be a W by lowering the ring finger - reason given was that it looked too much like the shocker) - "FNG" name. Previously new pilots were referred to as Filthy Beans (FB) until named. The new "new guy" call sign is New Warhawk ________ (first name only). NW is not an accepted abbreviation for "New Warhawk" as it may be misconstrued (???) - Top 6-9 meetings are no longer referred to as Top 6-9 meetings due to the sexual nature of their name. They are now Top 4-8 meetings, "or commander, DO, ADO, and Flt CC meetings - no other names will be accepted"

  31. Also strip that dude of his call sign...everyone forever more refer to him as rank and last name, even when talking about him in a conversation. His call sign should cease to exist and never be spoken by another individual again. He doesn’t deserve it.

  33. There is no world in which fighter pilot callsigns will be run by the EO office. It's hilarious that this dumbass of a squadron commander thinks that would ever be a thing that anyone would agree to. I would 110% prefer to not have an official callsign than to do this dickdance and I know every single other pilot in the entire CAF feels the exact same way. The predictable result of this is that squadrons are just going to have secret roll calls and namings off base with no bobs invited. Those will be twice as rowdy and irresponsible as if they just let us have our fun in the bar. If I was the mayor during this train wreck I would, in order: -resign -cancel all future rolls calls and namings -tell everyone in the squadron to stop wearing their callsign name tags -and then I'd coordinate on the bro level to throw the biggest effing offensive secret naming rager of all time.

  35. Finished listening to One Billion Americans. Not convinced of his argument and don't support it, shocking I know. Mainly I found it naïve and assuming, in that the problems that would accompany a policy of rapid mass migration could be solved with the central planner solutions he proposes. That pretty much sums up my main critique of his book, there is SO MUCH DETAIL he goes into that could be discussed and not all of his ideas are bad, but no thanks. I would recommend it for a Nationalist / Conservative looking to see how the other side is thinking and what is behind their ideas.

  37. Welcome to the party Brother. Last year my wife said, you are grumpy since you retired, just go buy your damn airplane. Yes Ma'am! I almost bought a Lancair 4P, had a deal in place, but during pre-inspection found out the airplane spent a few years of "unexplained" and unlogged time in Mexico, the maintenance log books were shit. I am 69% certain that plane was flying drugs into the U.S. and had no idea what shape the wing spars were in. Additionally, the insurance on some of the Lanceairs is outrageous because of their accident rate. I was very enamored with the performance of the Lancairs, especially the 4P, they tend to be sleek machines, fast and economical but most models have a high wing loading requiring some extra attention in the pattern. The insurance on the 4P was triple some of the other airplanes I was looking at and ultimately a big deciding factor. I ended up buying a Piper Saratoga TC II. I wanted to fly but also wanted a travel machine for the family. The guy that owned it before me dumped about $120K worth of glass into the airplane (see below). I flew steam gauges most of my career and was shocked by the SA the Garmin offers especially when it is integrated with the autopilot. I put about 180 hours on it in the last year. Four trips to DC (In-Laws live there), A few to Miami (my parents live there), and a lot of shorter trips in between. Once at altitude I typically I can lean for 13-16 GPH and see around 145-155 TAS. I started off using my IPad Pro, but found it too big for the cockpit. There was no place to put it so I kept it between the seats and pulled it out to review. I ended up buying an IPad Air with cell service which is still big but I can mount it with a suction cup. The cockpit of the Saratoga is a bit odd around the windshield/Dash and ideally the IPad Air would be more friendly for space, but we have decided to upgrade to a new airplane and it will accommodate the IPad Air. On trips I can do all mission planning on the IPad and I use it in the airplane with Foreflight running as a back up. As folks have stated above the Bose A2s are great, pricey but they fit is great and the ANR is superb. I tried a few in-ear options, forget the brand name, but didn't like them. My wife's college sorority was having a big get together in the Fall so I flew her to Tallahassee. She is a nervous flyer and at one point said, "it would be a lot better if you had a plane with two engines"...Again Yes Ma'am so I started an upgrade search. I looked at a bunch of options and I am signing a contract for a new SR-22 this week. Yes I know single engine but with the CAPS system I think it hits her "safety button" STS. I'll share my thoughts on the upgrade search and what lead me to the SR-22. We want to travel and we have another couple that usually goes with us. Useful load and range were driving factors. I was going to buy a Baron G-58. Great airplane, fast, and a fully integrated G1000 system. It also has better takeoff performance than the Cessna's. My home base airfield is only 3700' and while I could safely operate a 310 or some of the other Cessna options, the margin would be much smaller. I knew the cost factor would be higher for maintenance and fuel, but again it was insurance that was double that of the SR-22. It has a great useful load until you start accounting for all the extra gas you have to take. It was also the fastest option, although at double the fuel burn. I really wanted the Diamond DA-62, in fact, it wins hands down on all the performance, fuel burn, and operating cost factors. Single engine climb is well over 600 FPM, Cruise speed is superb, great useful load, tons of room inside and it sips 11.8 GPH of Jet-A at altitude. It has one major drawback that for me was a show-stopper, it has a HUGE fucking footprint. With a 49'3" wingspan there is only one hangar on my field that it will fit in and that hangar has been rented by a company for 12 years. They are building a bunch of new hangars on my field, but they are all too narrow...I will not leave an airplane that expensive outside. Finding a suitable hangar was going to create an hour plus drive at about triple the hangar rate I pay now. Previous to this I was not a big Cirrus fan to start with. A great friend and UPT classmate was their chief test pilot and was killed in one. They have come a long way and as I started to look the SR-22 met all of my performance wants. It is FAST for a fixed gear airplane...170 TAS at between 16-17GPH. Faster by far then my Saratoga with a minimal increase in fuel burn. Reasonable insurance (as long as you do the training). Also, depending on configuration, it has the best useful load of any of the other options I looked at. I am getting a new normally aspirated SR-22 G6. Flying in the south I don't need the turbo or icing system (which is very high maintenance by the way). I will still have oxygen if I want to jump up to 16K and grab a tail wind. Dropping the turbo and FIKI icing system bumps my useful load to 1269 pounds. I will be able to easily take my wife and our friends, all their bags and almost a full bag of gas which lets us range Charleston, Key West, Charlotte, DC, Nashville, Dallas non-stop. One other thought in my long rambling post, airplane prices are high right now because of USERRA. If you purchased an airplane by the end of 2020 you could use it as part of a business and go back five years of offset profit on your taxes. Baron Prices are very high, same with the SR-22. I was looking at a 2018 SR-22 G6 and when compared to a new one I can get a new SR-22 for about $60K more, but it will be in my color scheme, have zero time and Cirrus is throwing in a five year tip to tip warranty. Good luck brother and hope to see you out there.

  38. Welcome back to the GA world, I started back up last year and have been having a blast, while making lots of new friends. Was driving home from the rents today and stopped by an airport because I saw a Stearman inside an open hangar. Wandered up to the hangar to say hey and walked away with a bunch of ideas for my Stearman (plus their offer to help), and a planned 3-ship Stearman outing next weekend. As I was leaving I ran into a retired UAL Captain I know, so we took his Cub up and bounced around the local grass fields. Great people that just love aviation. Did you say air conditioning? Little bit too much AC this day...hoodie wasn't quite enough!

  41. Show me in the leave AFI where it says leave is automatically approved when submitted. I know someone overseas and the quarantine/testing/zero leave actions make our military people almost prisoners. If "exposed" they quarantine you for 2 weeks in your room... can't leave at all. Which I hear is the runtime of watching every Simpsons episode. One finds the end of the internet pretty quick like that. If and when a mandatory vaccinate order comes, the order will be fully vetted by DoD/Executive level legal. And there is a waiver for anything, except physics. PS, the things people lose their shit over these days is epically amazing. Out
