Let me say this first: I support diversity & inclusion. Some of the best officers and commanders I know aren't white males. Pick a race & sex combination and I've served with them. Personally, I'm also an advocate for girls in Boy Scouts of America and had all three of my daughters in BSA programs for the last decade...nothing against Girl Scouts, I just like the BSA programs (Boy Scouts, Venture Crews, Explorers) better. Now...I think both sides have missed the point. POTUS was at the ceremony for the 2x women 4-Star Combatant Commander. Of course his speechwriter, like all speechwriters, was going to throw in something with wide-spectrum relevancy, so highlighting the pregnancy flightsuit and other uniform changes was on there. Based on the speed of government efficiency, I'm assuming that development started under the Trump administration. If you watch the entire segment, not just the Twitter clip, Tucker was making a comparison to China, which is going through the same issues the US is...and in a potential response, built up their navy to over 350 ships. So Tucker, an opinion show, missed the point and tried to connect two data points that aren't directly obvious to fit his particular narrative. Who at MSNBC, CNN, print media hasn't done that? But...so did SecDef and the rest of the Senior Military Leaders who commented. Or at least over-reacted IMO. It seemed like thy were punching down to me, and I'm not sure they would have been better off keeping their powder dry...but the reaction above "Fuck this elite, pandering piece of trash" seems to be the GO#1 for both sides of the aisle. Everyone has their Ego involved and no one is willing to realize they aren't 100% correct. Critical thinking has been abandoned. Again, this is just my opinion, but by responding so aggressively to this Tucker story, it's made it emotional on both sides of the argument. Every advancement for diversity in the ranks will be met with comparisons to China's growing military power. Every question will in-turn be viewed through the lens of regressive, "Neanderthal" thinking and disregarded and attacked. A question for the SecDef, @17D_guy, and every one who agrees with him...did you have as much vitriol over RPA crews being called "baby killers" when they were listed as killing 1,700 civilians/400 kids? https://www.afsc.org/blogs/news-and-commentary/us-has-killed-thousands-people-lethal-drones#:~:text=According to the Bureau of,400 of whom were children.1 point

I assume you’re referring to GWB. Never met/worked with him but he struck me as a good person overall and certainly not as dumb as some pundits claimed. More of a practical common sense guy. On the other hand, I have spoken with Biden within the past 18 months. He was sharp, made good points, and had good insights at a new tech event. However, at this point he’s a 10 hour a day guy rather than 18 hours. Similar to Reagan in his last term.1 point

That was a moronic decision to target for his opinion piece. Especially when there are so many other legitimate things you could target about our lack of mission focus as China seems to strengthen theirs that have nothing to do with making it easier for pregnant service members to come to work every day.1 point

Good article and although I am not a squid, the Proceedings Podcast is worth a peruse, just listened to this episode and it's relevant to the article and the greater subject of preparation / deterrence of conflict with China: Proceedings Podcast Episode 212: China's Desert Storm Education (usni.org) From the article: On a sober note, Hinote pointed out that the Blue Team force posture tested in the recent war game is still not the one reflected in current Defense Department spending plans. “We’re beginning to understand what kind of U.S. military force it’s going to take to achieve the National Defense Strategy’s goals,” he said. “But that’s not the force we’re planning and building today.” That's true (as to no significant change in AF force structure) and over-arching paradigm for air, space and cyber power into a joint/coalition fight. As there is likely no enormous increase in appropriation likely now or in the near future and it seems we are not well configured for a fight in a theater with the tyranny of distance and the long range/cyber/space capabilities of our foes increasing, what are we willing to give up to become that force that can deter/win this fight? Or more broadly beyond more of this iron and less of this type, as an institution are we willing to become that force? - How many of us (manned vehicle aviators) would be willing to re-train to Cyber, Space or RPA if the AF determined that growing that enterprise / capability was what the Joint Team required? - As of now, the AF is fighter-centric in terms of force structure, cultural hierarchy and operational planning . A fighter is a medium ranged at best platform (without AR but that carries risk & cost) and probably not the best platform for deterring a massive Naval and Amphibious assault with our current basing/dispersal operations capability. Are we willing to become an AF that changes from that? To an X-centric force, probably quite different in terms of force structure than now. Just rhetorical questions to spark discussion but I have seen this idea that we as an AF and the US military are generally ill prepared to fight China / Russia, so what are we as military professionals saying to policy makers, politicians and the general public that will change that? Are we willing to say, cut my MDS because it's no longer relevant for the Big Fight(s)? Change the AF radically even though it will kill X jobs in Congressman X's district? I feel like this guy is staring at us from history looking for a leader in the AF to break from the herd and say that which may be personally and professionally damaging but must be said.1 point

It's also interesting to look back through history and see how different cultures borrow from other cultures, and how there are some pretty off the wall appropriations that may not be initially apparent. Like tacos al pastor, typically thought of now as a Mexican dish, was borrowed from Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Stereotypes are the same; can often be good or acceptable, but can be used badly. But eliminating the stereotypes for a certain group in media means applying/assigning other stereotypes to that group, usually from a majority group.1 point

The thing I've never understood about "cultural appropriation" is that the same people who will drag a white guy over the coals for wearing a sombrero will complain about the lack of representation in the media. Of course it isn't represented...you want to fence off culture based on race, rather than share it with the rest of the population.1 point

Anyone else think we should just start giving doses slotted for anti-vaxx holdouts to the next-lower priority? The goal is herd immunity. If a 55+ year old guy doesn't want his dose, let's stick that shot in some college kid's arm.1 point

Much like the O community, there are a lot of dirtbags that make it to the top towards Senior and Chief (if you have ever deployed, then you know). They look good on paper because they’ve stepped over their peers who are hacking the mission. Then they become SELs who have zero credibility in whatever technical mission and compensate by going after mustaches and short lengths instead of helping run the squadron.1 point

Because not getting the vaccine could cause you much bigger problems... I'm sorry your friend got brain fog from the vaccine. That's a new one I haven't heard about. But I would urge you to weigh the risks of the two options: Option one: give yourself ~95% protection from the virus and risk hypothetical long term side effects and the occasional case of brain fog. Option two: risk it with a virus that's killed half a million people in a year. Oh and we also don't know what covid's long term effects might be either. And If we're doing brain fog anecdotes, I'll chime in with my anecdotal evidence too: every single person that I know who has gotten the vaccine felt slightly off for one day, had arm soreness for a few days, and then went about their life.1 point

Seriously? It starts with a reading room in the library, it evolves into a CBT and culminates with a new policy requiring the same in every squadron. Slow erosion of common sense often goes unnoticed or unchallenged until you wake up in a dystopian world where the laws of physics no longer make sense.1 point

An Illinois county that he doesn't even represent voted to censure him. Which shows how seriously we should take county party organizations. Maybe the 4H club two counties over will censure him next! It's refreshing to see a true conservative refuse to go down with the ship. He also won his district by a substantially higher margin that did Trump, so his constituency is clearly well represented. I hope he's the future of the party. If not, God help us all.1 point

Adam is a great American and I hope he wins another term. He has done a LOT behind the scenes to help the men and women who serve....many of you on this forum have benefited from his efforts and don't even know it. He was right to vote his conscience and stand on his principle.1 point

I hope/believe Rep Kinzenger will make it through these times, and remembered for his courage to take on the party. The rest are spineless or complicit. I remember a class in school where we learned about mass hysteria and some examples in history. These times sound a lot like a mass hysteria event/s. Its a psychology problem I guess. That so many are influenced is quite amazing. And our foreign adversaries are probably grinning and chuckling, giddy with joy. Out1 point

The GOP contingent in the House is now largely ballless Betas afraid of their own shadows. For proof look no further than this weekend's Hunter S. Thompson fever-dream that is CPAC. I have tons of respect for Rep. Kinzinger for sticking to his principles, ignoring the conspiracy theories, and fighting for the soul of conservatism. The GOP needs as many Adam Kinzingers as they can find.1 point

Don't know him personally or professionally as I'm not in his district, hope he's an ok guy in person and will accept those testimonials about the many things he's done for service folk. Appreciate that. However, his constituents, the ones he's elected to represent seem to disagree with his stance rather strongly to include at least one county, I believe two but stand to be corrected, GOP committee censuring him for his vote to impeach Trump. The one county I am aware of is LaSalle County which is part of his district. Other county so censuring Iroquois which is also within this district. His choice to roll the dice to see if they either forget by next election or whether his district gets dissolved by the Illinois legislature as is likely if the state loses a congressional seat due to redistricting. I do take issue with his vote to strip the bat-sh1t crazy Georgia congresswoman of all her committee assignments. He helped deny her constituents their effective representation that they knowingly elected her to. As always in politics, IMO, it's a case of follow the money. His just started anti-Trump PAC combined with his many appearances on liberal media looks like a way to set up a comfy post-congressional lifestyle, either via K Street and/or TV gigs. Don't blame him a bit but it just strikes me as the B-model Scarborough. edited to add the specific counties which is in the district being discussed.-1 points

Sorry I thought the intent of this forum was to be like the squadron bar.. you know the place where you bitch, moan, argue, and solve world problems. If it would bother you less, I could just agree with everyone. But that doesn't sound like any fun at all.-1 points
