  2. I know, it’s tragic this is even being considered. Literally a few hundred extremely wealthy people have amassed humongous Roth IRAs and the D’s answer to that is to shut down one of the best venues for average Joes to invest for retirement and pass some wealth to their kids…

  3. My biggest and saddest realization during the Kung flu is just how many Americans happily/blindly/cooperatively (take your pick) gave up their individuality and ability to make personal health decisions. I am shocked to see how many working level law enforcement went along with the madness "because they were ordered to." The military is a little different case because they can order it and fighting a lawful order takes guts/financial resources/ability to care for family while fighting. Yet a not insequential number did so. Next big revelation was how many other "demoncracies" went the full monty fascist when given a chance. Some happy campers on this thread. Not hard to play "guess the fascist in waiting."

  5. Aaannnndddd…the inevitable pivot to conspiracy theories. You had some of them going for a while there on the religious bullshit. There are no fetal cells in Gatorade (I think you need to learn to read; that wiki page doesn’t reveal what you think it does). Still holding onto Comet Pizza and 1871 as well?

  7. Why is it that aliens can figure out how to travel across many millions of miles, over how many thousands of years, through an extremely dangerous and complicated environment...and they always fuck up the landing?

  8. "Perhaps the best Air Force recruiting commercial in history was posted to social media on Monday, but the Air Force recruiting service had nothing to do with its creation. The 14-second long video shows a pair of pilots making their way down the flight line at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, flight-suited up and carrying their helmet bags. The thing is, one of them is not walking: he’s rolling on a skateboard while holding what looks to be a cell phone to his ear..." https://taskandpurpose.com/mandatory-fun/air-force-pilot-skateboard-flightline/ 1504528583_AirForceamnncosncoonFacebookWatch.mp4

  9. Yes, NPR had an article about this three months ago. The funniest part is that the cited study makes a strong case for getting an mRNA vaccine, especially if you've been previously infected, rather than in spite of it. Since you decided that getting the vaccine was in your best interest after all, the findings of this study might be good news.

  10. Geez that's harsh. Pretty sure if you can't get Comirnaty you can't comply with the previous order..... not a lawyer though.

  12. Bottom line here's the deal regarding religious accommodation, or just accommodation in general. If maximum readiness and good order and discipline was the single pursuit of the military then it would be composed exclusively of ideologically identical people who have been baptized into state atheism. As it sits, the military has decided that is not the way to go. The problem at the moment is that is seems religious accommodations are being approved based on whatever is most politically expedient. In addition, politics are motivated by your religion or whatever worldview your subscribe to. If politics are any indication, then I would say the worldviews of population the military is supposed to reflect are trending divergent and the military is in for a mess any way you slice it.

  14. Except some religious tenets are incompatible with military service. I know of Jews who adhere to all the Sabbath restrictions when they can, but they don’t put up a fuss when they’re told to fly on a Saturday. If they refused that lawful order, they would be out of a job. Also, if someone uses the argument that “the Bible tells me to,” they’re usually cherry-picking which rules they actually adhere to. I’d like to meet a service member who actually adheres to everything written in Leviticus. And what exactly is wrong with my statement? Nobody ever got an abortion for the purpose of fetal cell research and abortion is not going away. Argue with those all you want, but you’re wrong. Even if it’s banned in the US, it will continue underground and in other countries. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. Here is a great primer on how BAH is calculated. https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/Docs/perdiem/BAH-Primer.pdf Of note, it is purely based off of rental costs. The gov could care less about home prices (although they traditionally influence rental rates, so indirectly they are related).

  19. Heady questions of Liberty and Fascism aside, I'm simply amazed at the number of people who've been previously screwed by the federal government in one way or another, yet keep coming back for more. My social circle includes folks ranging in age from early-30s to mid-40s. Some are mentally or physically broken from time in Iraq and Afghanistan. Others have incredible amounts of student debt. Many have huge mortgages. Granted no one put a gun to these people's heads and forced them to join the military, or take out student loans, or to buy houses. But in each case, the federal government was at-the-wheel in one way or another, and the end result was the individual getting screwed. Whether it was prolonging our military misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan, or federal backing of student loans and mortgages. Now, Uncle Sam comes along and mandates that everyone needs to get vaxxed (and boosted). And so many people line up to blindly comply. I'm just standing back, amazed and appalled watching it all unfold. Not saying that the federal government is some cartoon-level evil monolith, or that everyone should declare themselves a Sovereign Citizen and go join their local anti-government militia. However, you gotta ask: How many times are people going to take it in their shorts before they stop and say, "Wait a minute, maybe there is a possibility my elected leadership don't have my best interests at heart? Maybe I should look at their motivations with a level of skepticism and a critical eye?" The old shop-worn adage comes to mind: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

  26. It varies from 10 min turns to up to an hour or more depending on how far the incident is from the nearest base. In the S-2, the basic pilot math is 1/3 the distance in minutes each way, so 30 miles away is 10 min or about 25 min turns including ground time. For state incidents, it's usually no more than 30 min due to the location of our bases, but for federal incidents the times can go way up if they are remote. Especially anything on the east side of the Sierras (i.e. Owens Valley) since we have to cross the Sierras for each trip. We had a couple fast moving fires within 5 miles of the base this year where it was straight up 10 min turn arounds including the 3 minutes to load. Think I did 19 drops in about 3.5 on the Hobbs. We had five S-2s on the first fire and pounded the shit out of it that afternoon. Next day, same thing on the second fire. Kept them both to reasonable size and they were done by the morning. We prefer to keep them under 10 acres, but sometimes that's just not in the cards, so beating them in one day with minimal structure loss is a win too. Now, the Scooper aircraft that use lakes can have extremely short turns if there's a useable water body nearby. But that's another subject... This pic is the first fire after only 20-25 minutes after initial report...explosive to say the least. Terrain and up canyon winds were fueling it. We held it on the ridge to the left and stopped it in the small valley center-right of the pic. View is basically from downwind leg at the airport. It's a fun and rewarding job when you get to make an impact and see results!

  27. The California Fire Pilots Association (CFPA) has created an updated website with much more information than previously available. Some of which is the path to a career in fire aviation. Here is a link to the careers page: Careers | California Fire Pilots Association (calfirepilots.com) Also, this season a couple of our pilots participated in an episode of the Pilot to Pilot podcast. There is a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in the topic. CalFire- Fighting Wild Fires by Air by Pilot to Pilot - Aviation Podcast (anchor.fm) Here's a badass photo of my fellow Columbia Air Attack Base tanker pilot Ken, saving some structures near Clear Lake last summer...

  28. 1. This thread is just as bad as barracks lawyers. Go talk to the ADC and get a real answer if you need one. Ask about Show Cause Actions if you are concerned about your immediate future in the AF. 2. Your characterization will almost certainly be honorable if you serve for ten more years with no disciplinary issues after your 15.

  29. You’re going to piss off at least 1 of the 3, accept that, and don’t make that 1 your family. As long as you take that approach, you’ll be fine. If you’re lucky, you’ll have good leadership at both jobs and you may actually not piss off any of them, but that wouldn’t be my expectation, especially if one boss has never done the other job.

  30. When were you at Whiting? I was there March-Sep of '09. And yes, for career fields out of TBS (Infantry, Logistics, Artillery, Intel, etc...) there is a quality spread. The top third of each third tend to get their first choice. Kind of confusing but they don't want all the type A dudes going infantry. Absolutely. No one is getting preferential treatment for being slightly above average. You had to show that the Marine Corps would be losing a really talented guy for the fighter community. The Marine Corps lost an F-35 last WTI due to loss of SA on the tanker. There have also been numerous canopy strikes. That being said I'm aware that Navy and Marine Corps tanking is significantly different. Proud to admit I was always doing the plugging and not vice versa. 😉 I'm not sure what you guys are seeing but we are having issues with FRS/FTU students trying to fly form by being glued to the glass in ATC spread on a 10nm scale TSD transiting to and from the area vice simply looking over his/her shoulder.

  34. He's a twice passed over nav that has no identity to latch onto but his military service. He can't just punch at the first chance like most of us to go to a more lucrative job where we can make decisions on our own. Of course he's going to die on the vaccination hill because if he wasn't vaccinated, he wouldn't have a paycheck. You can keep feeding the troll or just pat the nav on the head and smile and nod.
