would you feel the same way if the government closed your business and drove you into bankruptcy? i'm genuinely curious. because that's what happened to hundreds of thousands of your countrymen. you don't think there should be accountability for that? or for firing people from not taking an experimental vax that has been proven to not work and/or cause deadly side effects in some people? you also think it's "Ok" that the white house used twitter and facebook to censor and ban doctors/citizens who had options contrary to the CDC? Opinions that turned out to be 100% correct. you think it's "ok" that doctors who spoke out against mandatory covid vaccinations and mandatory masking had their medical licenses revoked by their states? you're good with saying "eh... fuck it let's move on"? i think you're missing a lot. this isn't over. not by a long shot. lawsuits are just now being filed and the truth is starting to come out.3 points

Seriously? I mean, the entire country (and the world) was thrown into 2+ years of chaos. Lives ruined, and the after effects of it all are going to be felt for the rest of our lives. Side effects from vaccines, the reshaping of the economy, the mental damage its caused people, etc, etc. To say nothing for the subset of politicians out there that are spring-loaded to move back to lockdowns and masks just as soon as Covid numbers "spike" again.2 points

You're not wrong. Social media censorship is always bad. The wrong decisions were made by government in a lot of cases. Closing peoples businesses on the grounds that they're non essential is horseshit. Masking kids for years on end is pointless. Vax mandates for civilian workers is a huge violation of medical autonomy and privacy. But when you have a country of 320 million people in a patchwork of 50 states you're going to get a wide variety of responses. And cobbling together the ones you don't like into a big laundry list doesn't constitute a conspiracy. My state (Texas) did almost none of the things listed above. And if I asked you pre-pandemic which states would go batshit with regulations and mandates, you probably could have predicted it with high accuracy. But that's the cool part of the United States. You can choose where to live. It sounds like the voters in California and New York value perceived safety over freedom. I think that's ass backwards and it sounds like you do too. So shocker, I don't live in California or New York and I never will. On the flip side of the coin, the 5 worst states in covid deaths per capita are all Republican. I'd bet there are plenty of California and New York people who think these states' covid response was batshit. The lesson learned here is that there are trade offs between safety and freedom and you should live in a place that aligns with your values. edit: and if the federal government response is your primary concern.. maybe the Republican party should kick their trump addiction. Because no one in the history of the United States drives Democrat voter turnout like he does. Hitching your wagon to the mid 70's orange clown who denies election results, mishandles classified, and has zero appeal outside of the far right is not a way you get the things you want at the federal level.2 points

When Trump and his supporters say the election was stolen it’s anti-democracy, fascism, etc…but when the Dems say an election was stolen, well then that’s different. “White House Press Secretary Called Out for Saying Trump ‘Stole’ 2016 Election“ https://www.nationalreview.com/news/white-house-press-secretary-called-out-for-saying-trump-stole-2016-election/?fbclid=IwAR1DySUnay0jMN9T1CJWQMq6qMuHGUbT5tO-0qlqL-nCbuAYxGZo4RCflhU&fs=e&s=cl2 points

Got kicked out of the base gym last week for no mask. They are mandated at a decent amount of bases I would assume besides mine. Just a small snapshot that it is still affecting decisions and people sadly.1 point

I thought of this thread when I saw this reported yesterday. She can’t respond to anything without referencing her notebook. A Press Secretary should be able to address at least some portion of topics extemporaneously. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app1 point

You’ve got the living in domicile part figured out, so you’d probably be right to just go with your gut and not overthink it…even though we all do. As far as forecasting the future there probably isn’t a more stark comparison of company financials than between AA and SWA, and yet the sense here at SWA is that we struggled just as much as everyone else and don’t have anything to show from our $16B pre-pandemic war chest…might as well have bought those 300 Dreamliners! There’s no harm in applying to all three and seeing what you think. Worst case you get some bonus interview practice. FWIW I had SWA maybe #4 or 5 but changed my tune after digging into it post-interview. I’m not pitching SWA over others, but since most of my mil buddies close the door on it because it lacks the cool factor I’ll offer up my standard spiel: in my 5-year experience all the knocks I’ve heard have pretty much been overblown (except for the long upgrade). Schedule flexibility, time off, and ability to make extra when desired has been surprising. I’ve had no missed Christmases/anniversaries/birthdays (even first year), which is kind of the reason I left the AF in a nutshell. My AF years were my time for strapping into cool machines and putting pins on maps, but now my QOL criteria is less about enjoying my time at work and more about maximizing my ratio of dollars to days off. Not saying that can’t be found elsewhere, but just bringing it up to answer your question on whether you should at least consider SWA.1 point

TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics) reactors are small and I can see them modified for power generation. I hear they're safer safe compared to the bigguns (different fuel). For example, the Mechanical Engineering building at UW Madison houses a 1 MW TRIGA. The building occupies a block and one wouldn't know there's a reactor in the building when passing by. Anyway, just shows that many small power plants could work, just add a steam generator system. Oh, and I know nothin about this stuff, so.... https://reactor.engr.wisc.edu/1 point

I think what you're alluding to is the so called small, modular reactors. In my estimation, the primary advantage of these is less their size, and more the standardized safety design(s). In other words, a 300Mw reactor could have 1-4 pre-approved configurations (# of reactors in the facility), which would hopefully make the regulatory approval process shorter, and allow new facilities to get started in a reasonable timeline. In any event. Agreed.1 point

When getting my type rating, our FAA examiner told us from his experience something to the effect of “all it takes is one big furlough to derail an otherwise good career progression at your airline”. YMMV, but that comment stuck with me. Sounds like Huggy/TreeA10 would agree to varying degrees based on their experiences. And I’m not insinuating that there’s gonna be a big furlough upcoming at any of the legacies…like most here I have a lot of friends at all of them, and for everyone’s sake I certainly hope each company can weather any storms they may have on the horizon. Of the 3 things listed in priority order (living in domicile, seniority progression, job security), I used to rank the companies I applied to in that exact order also. In the end I actually ended up turning down a job with an airline in domicile with great progression in favor of a different company that’s historically been a LOT more stable (but is still gonna have great seniority progression), even though I’m now gonna be a forever commuter. As they say, won’t know if that was the best choice until I retire. Unfortunately for 95% of us there isn’t an airline that perfectly checks all the squares in our order of preference.1 point

I like Gov Abbott’s gameplan applied to this problem; OK “homeless advocates” guess you guys are right, we’ll just make sure the homeless have comfortable places to set up surrounding your backyard and sidewalk out front. “BUT, BUT, NIMBY!!!!!!!” Hypocritical dumbasses, all of them.1 point

Not to mention "homeless advocacy" seems to amount to "let them stay on the streets, putting them into shelters is harmful".1 point

Watching Seattle politics on the homeless was insane. You have an entire spectrum of people who refuse to even acknowledge a connection between addiction and the homelessness up there, and some of them will consider it a form of bigotry to even suggest it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I’m still relatively new, so don’t claim to know that much, but I will say APC must be taken with a massive grain of salt. Many of the same individuals with non-stop doom and gloom messaging, how the company screws everybody, lots of 100% false info on there, etc. APC is not a great reflection of reality, and I think that applies to every airline out there. AA’s financials are not nearly as good as others, but I think we’ve seen the legacies really are too big to fail at this point. So, if living in DFW is what you want to do with life, then yeah, go for AA and don’t look back. For SWA, I’ve heard good things from friends there for the most part, but I personally didn’t want to be stuck in a 73 for my entire career flying to meh places. Variety over the course of a long career was worth something to me (and to many people); seniority is also a relatively slow progression there vs. others from what my friends say (friends came from SWA to DAL). There will always be good things about an airline and there will always be things to bitch about; there is not a perfect airline out there and APC is full of shit 99% of the time!1 point

Anybody with half a brain knew that would be the case. Of course a decision this momentous has to come from the president. But the current president looked right in the camera and lied about it, and some people here on this board are actually OK with that.1 point

Yeah, this is key. Everybody’s going to have to come to terms with the fact that we NEED new reactors. A lot of progress has been made over the past 40 years and it’s my understanding that smaller, regional level plants are probably the way to go. We should start a massive PR campaign to get people on board & start building the things ASAP. In related news, the French have apparently come to terms with the reality of Europe’s energy predicament and decided to re-start all of their reactors: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/edf-restart-all-its-nuclear-reactors-by-this-winter-minister-says-2022-09-02/ Over/under on how long it takes them to start selling electricity to the Germans?1 point

that's all well and good....IF people hadn't been forced to close their businesses, IF people hadn't been forced to take an experimental drug or get fired, IF kids hadn't (and in some states STILL) been forced to wear masks in schools, IF big tech hadn't censored only ONE side of the argument AT THE FUCKING DIRECTION OF THE US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AKA CDC hell NYC and LAX STILL "require" MASKS in the airport. thankfully people with a brain don't wear one. but hell man it's not fucking over. IF all those things hadn't happened i'd tend to agree with you...no problem. But all that shit did happen. and the decision makers were wrong. hundreds of thousands/millions of lives were fucked up. there needs to be accountability.1 point

*citation needed. I know joe and Jill Biden are important and I'm no scientist but I'm pretty sure one old couple with repeat infections is not a statistically significant data set. Also I've been reliably informed by far right pundits that getting covid isn't the concern. Dying from covid is. So what's the problem here? Biden got the vax which was designed for and was far more effective against the early variants. (Which were also more deadly.) This boosted immunity in the early stages of the pandemic when it was particularly dangerous for the elderly. Now that the virus has had 2+ years to mutate, the vaccine is less effective, and the strains are more contagious but thankfully less virulent. (Something literally every scientist worth their salt predicted..) And as the data changed the CDC and basically every state has lifted mandates correspondingly. Turns out the dems are still in charge and we aren't descending into a "zero covid or bust" 1984 hellhole. Things are just kindof going back to normal now that it isn't as big of a threat. You guys so desperately want there to be a conspiracy but I'm just not seeing it. Perhaps the one valid complaint you have left is how slow the military has been to get their policies in line with emerging medical guidance. But if you expected timely policy updates from the military I have a bridge to sell you.1 point
