  5. Large scale RPA tankers makes a ton of sense. Maybe a couple operators manage several aircraft at a time, much like airline dispatchers - don’t exceed a 4:1 ratio or something like that. I’m surprised we haven’t come further on this topic; the MQ-25 is nothing more than proof of concept.

  7. I remembered when we were deployed we used to prank local workers and TCNs, grease toilet seat lids so they would slip if they tried to squat crap on them, or some other buffoonery. In light of reading this I sort of feel bad about that now. Imagine being coerced into modern day slavery via indentured servitude only to be humiliated and made fun of by uniformed members of a rich country that you will never hope to enter one day. I'm going to go drink some hard alcohol now. Good night.

  9. How about a crew rest waiver? I’d rather have a tired pilot sit next to me than no pilot. Wars over….people are bored. Bad idea fairy is working overtime…..

  12. Those NGAD timelines aren’t rumor. The 7th Gen Army attack helos (AH-69 “Elizabeth Warrens”) from the 1/1064th CAB are the rumor.

  13. Yeah but the offload is crap (10-15K total). I would think is a business case in the INDOPACOM fight for larger attritable tankers...or at least unmanned that could help with the pilot shortage and be pushed closer to the threat ring. We are in serious lag pursuit in this CONOP and I am for out of the box thinking that flips the calculus back in our direction.

  14. Something overlooked is the single seat vs crewed aircraft mentality. I’ve flown some version of crewed aircraft since 2007. This year I switched to a single seat airframe and I just finished a T38 qualification. The stick and rudder was fairly easy, however the part that absolutely kicked my butt was getting past 15 years of crew mentality. That included things like not having the other dude talking on the radio, setting up approaches, running checklists, dealing with emergencies, etc. In a perfect world, a single pilot can fly the -46 without issue. When shit gets busy, it’ll be sketch at best, to downright dangerous, for that pilot to deal with the issues happening with the jet, and this whole experiment is geared towards the SHTF scenario. Without a lot of practice, I’d hazard to bet the guy flying the -46 by himself will have some subconscious crewed aircraft habits creep back in, which could be disastrous. And no offense to booms, I’ve flown with some really sharp dudes, but a boom isn’t the same as a pilot. The boom can help but it’s not the same as having another pilot in the seat. TLDR; crewed to single piloted ops is not as simple as it seems.

  16. Well I started a new thread about single pilot ops not realizing it’s being discussed here on this thread. Is this exclusive to the KC-46 or being tried on other aircraft? I would think some platforms like the C-17 would be more difficult due to the width of the cockpit and trying to reach the gear handle, etc. If it’s exclusive to the KC-46, the obvious question is why? Is there really that much of a need for this? I’m sure restrictions for crew duty day, flying with pax, etc. will all have to be rewritten. And just ask the pilots of United 328, United 1175, and Southwest 1380 just how busy it gets when you shell out an engine at cruise let alone at V1!

  20. When did this “dude from the right” stop being a supporter of the Green Party (hardly a right wing organization) and become a member of the right wing? Was it before or after he became a nudist in the Bay Area and a hemp jewelry maker? Doesn’t really sound like a hard “right wing” conservative militia type to me. “Listed years ago in voting records as a Green party supporter, DePape said he also took to the streets with activists who opposed a successful push to ban public nudity in San Francisco, the Chronicle also reported.” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/oct/28/paul-pelosi-nancy-pelosi-attack-david-depape?fbclid=IwAR2A4USEQJm6RWCNU3DXdkedzmvofF39O_HZ-x7BGrI-kGMIe2gqjYaG8sE&fs=e&s=cl

  21. This. As long as expectations are set that's it's a contingency only thing to train for, sure. However, the retards that infest AMC as "leadership" will make sure it becomes a normal currency due to a pilot shortage.

  22. I’ll probably get flamed for this, but if this is truly a response to a pilot shortage, then I’m glad it’s being looked at…AS LONG AS it’s part of a holistic approach. The root cause of course has to be on retention efforts, but if the reality of the situation is we don’t have the pilots needed to meet the frag and lose the war, then we have to accept reality. I’d personally rather have a bunch of single pilot KC-46’s passing gas to the strikers required to actually meet the night 1 goals than get a ton of folks killed because we can’t get everything needed to the fight.

  23. One thing I don’t think a lot of people realize about your Berkeley type nut jobs is that many of them would be pretty similar to this dude if you started asking them what they believe. Yeah this wacko sprinkled in some extra right wing type garbage, but a lot of these crazies have no love for any people in our government. Nothing short of a totalitarian state that only caters to their narrow world view is acceptable to them, and people like Nancy Pelosi aren’t viewed as on their side either. In fact, the Pelosi house has been targeted several times since 2020 with some pretty nasty stuff, this one of course taking the cake. The real thing that people should be looking at here is that the political system in a place like Berkeley, CA let’s losers like this proliferate. Mental illness is not only ignored, it’s often celebrated; and drug use is essentially decriminalized, further fueling the mental death spiral of people like this to the point they feel like acting out on their deranged conspiracy fantasies.

  24. Starts that way. But then you have to practice it before you do it in wartime. Then the practice becomes a currency. Then it just becomes standard operating procedure to make the pilot shortage seem less severe.

  25. I agree and it is reflective an earlier time in our history when political violence was not just the norm, it was almost celebrated. Of note some very famous politicians took part in duels, many to the death: 1. Burr v Hamilton - a sitting Vice President killed his rival in a Duel 2. Jackson v Dickinson - over an insult to one man's wife 3. Benton v Lucas - Benton was basically Andrew Jackson's Chief of Staff while in Congress. 4. Graves v Cilley - two sitting Congressman fought a duel, Cilley was killed. 5. Lincoln v Shields - President Lincoln as a State Rep showed to Duel State Auditor James Shields, luckily thier seconds talked them out of the fight or he may have never become President. 6. Clay v Randolph - Clay then Secretary of State and Randolph a sitting U.S. Senator fought a duel where thankfully one purposely missed and the other was a horrible shot. Not meant to be a history lesson but clearly we have a history of political violence in this country and I hope cooler heads will prevail and dialogue will ensue before we ever get close to the days of old.

  33. What's the latest on this program? Are the 6 initial cadre still all going to Laughlin? The first 3 of 6 are supposed to be hired in the coming weeks... but it's been rather quiet. When I inquired back in June, I was told I was 35 years beyond the cutoff. As you might guess, I was triggered... but I'm ok now.
