  1. Having taught pilot training, and taught specifically in VR/computer sims with exactly the equipment you listed, I can tell you with 100% certainty you can get training value out of it.. but only if you approach it seriously and methodically. If you play fuck fuck games and yank and bank through downtown Dallas or the Grand Canyon it will give you zero training value. But if you get your hands on a UPT base inflight guide, a t-6 or t-38 sim model and start trying to actually fly military style overhead patterns you will get something out of it. Both from a pacing and cross check perspective. Don't try to practice aerobatics, it's garbage and negative training. Look up what a vertical S maneuver is and try to do that. Also try turns at different bank angles 30, 45, and 60 while trying maintaining your altitude +/-150 feet.

  2. First drop I witnessed at SPS was 5 x UAV, 5 x U-28/PC-12, a FAIP, 1 x B-52, and 1 x F-15E. I also say this as a graduate of ENJJPT, the fact that people are much more likely to drop fighters based on their ability to do well in college/OTS is a joke. It’s how you end up with folks that fly fighters instead of fighter pilots (massive difference). I stopped through SPS awhile back and overheard a student say something to the effect of he didn’t have to excel just survive to end up in a Viper. I wanted to choke slam him.

  3. I disagree From the article “In letters the Army sent this month to the affected aviators as well as to members of Congress, which were obtained by NBC News, it said it “realized” after conducting a “legal review of this policy” that the three-year BRADSO requirement has to be served separately.” I don’t think they knew. I would put money on the fact that, when they signed up, they asked if this commitment would be concurrent and I would put money on the fact that some personnel NCOs said yes. How many times have you talked to someone at MPF and gotten a confidently wrong answer from someone and gone with it only to find out later that the info was incorrect? I can give you multiple examples of personnel inconsistencies When I was awarded a Nav slot in 1994, the commitment had changed from 5 to 6 years. I had to cross out every 5 in my contract, change it to a 6 and initial it. One of my friends was at a Det that didn’t do that. Guess what? She got out at the 5 year mark. My kid was told in Jan 2021 that he could commission into the ANG from ROTC in 2021 under the Bow Wave program. Everyone was on board, he found a unit and got hired…then in April 2021 A1 ended the program and didn’t tell anyone…not the gaining state recruiters, not the ROTC det, not the unit. They did all the paperwork to submit in May only for AFPC to say “sorry, that program is over, the moose out front should have told you.” I could go on and on. So to make a blanket sweeping generalization that every single one of these aviators read a contract that apparently the entire Army didn’t even understand and they all need to man up? It’s another case of the member getting screwed and the incompetent bureaucrats run free. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network Forums

  4. I love your enthusiasm. I think unsupervised use of a sim without direct context from a UPT IP, no matter how much you try to follow some YouTube video, is not going to make a difference, and at worse could unintentionally build some bad habits you’ll have to break. I also CFI in civ world, and even there sims have their utility, but when I get a guy who’s done “no context” flying with MS Sim or something like that, it 100% has not helped, and in fact has usually hurt as I come upon mistakes that they self-reinforced while using a sim environment. Do the sim because you have fun with it, but don’t expect it to be a measurable help in prep for UPT.

  5. Of course this shit happens when I'm set to retire. It wouldn't be a fitting end to my career without one more admin fuck job lol. At this point, I really shouldn't be surprised by any of this. The first time I submitted a batch of orders for early retirement (circa 2017), I received the results in about 10 days. I submitted another one in early Feb (assuming same timeline), and I have yet to receive a response. I wanted to add another order (just completed) but it won't let me because, it's still "work in progress." It's been in that status for over 2 months now. I called and asked about the timeline because I retire in 2ish months. The VPC lady had no idea and couldn't get me in contact with those who may have an idea...good talk Russ! She did say that I can still work this issue in retirement, but she said, "it's more painful." So I got that going for me, which is nice. Fuck, at this point I've already totalled my days and know what my early retirement should be. They should just take my data and call it good. I mean, we already do everyone else's job as it is, why would this be any different?

  8. 11Rs generally struggle to gain relevance in the flying community. They are continually relegated to bus drivers with little buy-in to the mission, very little tactical mentoring, and low opportunity for career broadening. They also tend to get pigeon holed into assignments because according to AFPC there is 0 transferability from an RC-135 to a KC-135. So unless you really love Omaha you really don't have a lot of future to go anywhere else.

  10. Ive seen a few YouTube videos on t-38 check rides, and the requirements needed to perform maneuvers. Videos and info like you suggested would be exactly what I would like to practice on, but who would I be to not dick around and fly 600 knots around the map. appreciate the advice!

  11. That would be an amazing parody skit. Imagine the perpetual second place guy scrambling to get his cut off in a slapstick way, bursting into the room to make the announcement, only to find out the careerist already being congratulated on the transition and awarded the job

  13. 56.7% and 56.1% in 2022 and 2021, respectively, in the zone. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2022/08/03/over-500-airmen-promoted-to-colonel-as-open-slots-stagnate/ Someone might drastically increase their chances by doing SDE in-correspondence, but even with that, those numbers are more than fogging a mirror. I don’t plan on doing SDE in-correspondence. The jobs I’m being asked to do and the people I’m being asked to lead at this stage, and my family, deserve better. I’m not going to divide my time further. But I’m also not going to take a dump on the people doing it and getting promoted. I’ve not once been able to say this life is easy, and if they want more of it and can, or are willing to do what the system is asking of them, good on them.

  16. I don't have the defender, but I do have another vortex 6 moa red dot and I'm not impressed. Rather than a single dot, it is actually a ring of about 6-9 dots with a single dot in the middle. I bought it for an AR pistol and it is only OK. Assuming this is the same thing in a smaller frame, might be OK for a short range defensive pistol, but I don't know you'd extend your accurate range that much more than some quality after market iron sights.

Definition: An inquiry used to determine whether a service member incurred an injury or disease while in a duty status; whether it was aggravated by military duty; and whether incurrence or aggravation was due to the service member’s intentional misconduct or willful negligence.

  22. Their inability to get a bonus out before the 8th month of the FY, is a perfect metaphor for how things go in the AF. Nothing like spending a monumental amount of effort on TDYs that just get cancelled. Not knowing if the money will be there for a TDY until the day prior to leaving (true story). Even then, the money didn't flow, just told, "Trust us, it will be there." Fuck it...let's roll! $50K isn't enough, not in today environment. It will be a nice perk for those who were staying anyway.

  23. @Padres02 That’s probably the best setup you could possibly have. Even if you had a tight schedule one day, you could square the corner by finishing a flight and powering up the civ job laptop for a teams meeting at the squadron if you didn’t have time to run home in between. Keep your civ job calendar accurate (e..g not avail 0700-1200 X date) and your civ counterparts won’t care (or shouldn’t at least). That hypothetical is just a minor example, you’ll have no legal issues taking multiple days/years off for training, deployments, etc (at least USERRA-wise).

  24. Seems like a weird comment. Trolling? The data shows that back in your day the promotion rate to O-6 was 45%. Today the promotion opportunity is 50%. Also today, most pilots are promoted within the same competitive category, so they’re mainly competing against each other and not the bigger Air Force.

  30. How much of your training was on VR? How many real airplane sorties did you get? Did you have to wear the sombrero? How do the instructors feel about the new training (from your student perspective)? Are FAIPs tools? *it's a yes or yes question* Does it suck?

  33. Not sure I fully agree based on research. Got my PhD with a dissertation in predicting pilot training performance. Lot's of research, including my own findings, revealed use of computer-based simulation had a correlation with improved UPT performance. It's a similar correlation (although not as strong) as overall flight hours entering UPT. Can there be negative transfer? Sure, but generally it was beneficial. If you want to turn over every rock to make your dream come true, it is likely to help. Personally, I'd spend the cash on strippers and whiskey but that's just how I roll...

  35. Real talk now - The current administration has a laser-like focus on identity politics, and no where is this more evident than in their political appointments, particularly in the high profile positions. And it doesn't get much more high profile than a service chief. The talk about qualifications and experience of different candidates is laughable. The next CSAF is going to be chosen based on which box they check. Given the current field, I assume it's going to be "First Female CSAF."

  37. If you want to go the ANG/Reserves, enlist with a Guard unit in your area, or a unit you would like to fly for one day! Most units have great educational benefits with tuition assistance that you could use to help you achieve your bachelor's degree without incurring debt. Then apply to every Guard unit that has a UPT board. Most units will give automatic interviews to unit members that have all of the boxes checked. Like Kilo said get a private pilots license, or as many flight hours as possible. I recommend enlisting because as most people can attest here it is very hard to get hired off the street, not impossible though. This is the route that I took, and I got hired my first interview. Best of Luck!

  38. What Matmacwc said is correct. Tolerating G's is more about having good AGSM technique than anything else. Second most important is having an ATAGS (the new g-suit). Third is being physically fit. Being tall, short, fat, or skinny does not affect your G-tolerance enough to concern you. Also, the only times you pull 8-9 Gs are during BFM & ACM. And even then, it's only for 6-9 seconds at a time (unless you're messing it up). Bottomline: Stay generally physically fit. Don't skip leg day, but don't stop upperbody workouts as well. And for your own health, you should be running 1-2 times a week. https://distractify-media-prod.cdn.bingo/1558806-980x.jpg

  39. Pulling G's itself does not physically hurt in my opinion. For me, 6-7.5G is where I G strain but don't have to put much effort into it. The 7.5 to 9G+ area is where I really feel it and have to really focus on my G strain before laying on the G. I'd say above 8G is where it gets uncomfortable but not necessarily painful, just feels like a lot of pressure I guess. Trying to move your nugget around under G is where guys get hurt. Don't do it. If you lose sight, big deal, you're going to get gunned but thats better than screwing your neck or back up. I've lifted my entire life also and after my first exposure to BFM in IFF, I transitioned to a crossfit style workout. I don't follow their programming or do anything I think is stupid but I do spend time working on mobility, heavy barbell movements (think sets of 3-5 reps squats, deads, O-lifts), and conditioning. I think, if you're going to be a fighter pilot, you really need to focus on those 3 things equally to stay healthy in the jet. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

  40. Jump on a trampoline 20 minutes a day while clenching all your muscles and holding your breath. It'll add up to 2 G's to your strain in just 6 weeks.

  41. I think the consensus is that more core strength and less aerobic fitness. Long distance runners tend to have larger blood vessels in their legs (and lower heart rates/blood pressure) which promotes more pooling of blood. It is also known that shorter individuals theoretically can handle g's better than taller individuals. Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

  42. I just had my initial solo in the 38 yesterday. It's a tricky airplane to land, for the reasons that Toro said. The numbers that Toro gave were for touchdown speed. I'm not sure about the numbers that Fluff gave, unless he's flying the 38 C model and it has different speeds. In the A model, full-flap and 60 degree flap final approach speed (or bug speed) is 155 plus 1 knot for every hundred pounds above 1000. Below 1000 pounds total fuel, approach speed is 155. Final turns are flown at 20 knots above bug speed. Touchdown speed is computed at 25 knots below final approach speed. No flap finals are flown at 170 plus one knot for every hundred pounds above 1000. Again, with fuel below 1000, 170 is used. Final turns are 20 knots above that. Here at Sheppard, the T-38 washout rate is relatively low. I don't have statistics to back it up, but if I had to guess I would say that on average each class of 25-30 coming into 38s (STS) would lose 1-2 studs by graduation. Flaco
