Well, I will probably actually not sell the house until after PIQ. My wife has a good job and can float the mortgage no problem. Vicious3027, can you explain more about how you worked that out, and provide more specifics? Thanks!
So I just got hired at a unit across the country. I currently am a homeowner and am okay with selling my house to make the move. I will need to move for UPT, PIQ, and finally to my unit. What assistance is provided to somebody in my situation? Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!
What typically happens in the gaps between OTS, UPT, survival, and any other phases of training? Are you on casual status collecting a pay check while at home, or something else?
Thanks for the info! All the people in the last year that I've heard apply for an ETP have gotten approved. That would be about 10 people including the ones mentioned in this thread. Not that it is easy to get, but it sounds more like its a paperwork burden/waiting game more than anything. Anybody know of ETP's getting rejected, or specific stats regarding ETP approval rates?
So far I've interviewed 4 times over the last year and a half and haven't managed to land a slot. My last interview was a couple weeks ago for a Reserve slot. My guess is that I might have a couple more shots at Guard units since they don't have to wait until a Reserve board to know if they can hire me. Have you seen anybody get hired at 29?
I've learned that e-mail is not very effective with pilots/squadrons, for whatever reason. Maybe because its the lazy way of communicating with people. I've found that anytime I called up a squadron or pilot's cell number that was posted as a point of contact for a hiring board, they've always been extremely helpful. When they answer be sure to let them know who you are and what your intentions are (applying to unit and would like to visit) and they will treat you like a different person from just some random individual who dialed their number. If they don't answer right away and be sure to leave a message - I've always gotten calls back. One time a Col. from a fighter wing called me back and spent a good 20 minutes giving me advice on the process and was very direct and specific in regards to what kind of person they were looking to hire.
The fact that you're still a sophomore in college is a real benefit. Don't be like me and jack around until you're 27 before getting serious about it.
I just played it safe and went as business casual and everything worked out fine. I got the impression that they probably wouldn't care too much one way or the other as long as you look tidy.
How difficult is it to leave every weekend or every other weekend during UPT (i.e. Friday night to Sunday)? I have a house within a couple hours of Laughlin and would not be selling it as I would be returning after training but would like to visit my wife.
It is to have lunch with and meet the squadron, turns out it will likely be during the week when I'll have to get off of work and will already be dressed business casual.
