Mattis: pensive, scholar of war. Trump: stupid. But yes, somehow Trump and I have wound up at the same Middle East policy. Let the mfer burn.

I would be surprised if that memo were real.

Commanders are dropping like flies this year
Homestar replied to MDDieselPilot's topic in General Discussion
I guess I’m of two minds regarding the posting of a DEOCS survey. Yeah, I understand that I asked for it. Just thinking out loud here. The guy should have been fired, clearly, based on the comments by the squadron. But command is a game where the best you can hope for is to break even and finish command before you get fired. I’ve benefited from good commanders, sure, but the older I get the more I wonder why anyone would want to be a commander. Maybe the (former) commanders here can chime in with all the wonderful aspects of command. -

At what point does it make sense to refinance or do a IRRRL? I'm currently at 3.75%.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Nothing replaces reps in the jet. But chair flying in a VR environment is a gazillion times better than the eyes-closed or poster flying I did. And it can prepare someone to take reps in the jet more efficiently. If I don't have to explain the nuts and bolts of a pattern because you already know them, I can focus on getting you to land and go around single engine and 0-flap, etc.

Teachability (willingness to learn), and dedication to study and preparation. Like someone else said, you can teach a monkey to fly with enough bananas. The smart ones know that they get a finite number of bananas in the jet and that further bananas have to be earned in chair flying (and other forms of preparation).

Just curious to know how many students you've helped through UPT? I've been doing it for a couple years now, and I simply do not see traits like "lack of drive, effort, and aptitude" as common in UPT. I am old enough to have flown a fix to fix in a Tweet and I really don't see a massive difference from then to now in aptitude. It basically follows a bell curve. I will say, however, that some of my peers believe that there isn't a top third/middle third/bottom third anymore....more like middle third/and the rest. Not sure I agree with that assessment, but I don't have a lot of involvement with MASS scores. VR has a world of potential for T-1 students IMO. I sure would like it if a stud could actually fly a decent pattern by T5005 by getting a few hundred reps in a VR sim in addition to the 40 or so patterns they get in the first block of trans. PTN is an experiment. If leadership is concerned that it didn't work, well, that's how experiments work.

Couldn't find a relevant existing thread for this one: https://taskandpurpose.com/military-children-born-abroad-citizenship The part that seems confusing to me is making the child take the oath before the 18th birthday.... So, sometime after learning how to understand human speech and learning how to speak English but before 18th birthday. This would have been interesting for me since I had a kid in January 20XX and moved back to the States two months later. Would have had to apply for an immigrant visa or something?

Did anyone who signed the bonus in 2014 renegotiate in 2015 to 20 YAS? Did that cause a delay on any of your payments after the first 5? This will be my first payment of the "extension" I negotiated in 2015 and I can't shake the feeling that I'm about to get enrolled in the Jelly-of-the-month Club.

Funny, NHTSA has stats on this as well. 795 deaths in 2017. https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drowsy-driving Get yourself the FO. -

I agree that the problem isn't black and white. A major difference is that driving sleepy isn't per se a crime, despite being dangerous. Driving drunk is. If your squadron sends pilots home often after 24 hour duty days, your Sq/CC should probably establish a crash pad/room in the building or agree to pay for an on-base room. -

straw man /ˌstrô ˈman/ noun 1. an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument. ***************************** If you wanted my opinion on distracted driving you should have just asked. But that's not what we're talking about. Distracted driving killed just over 3,000 people in 2017 https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-driving Drunk driving killed nearly 11,000 people in 2017 https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving I'll allow for nuance in this discussion and say that not all drunk/buzzed/high driving events are all the same. And I'd allow that jail time for a first offense is probably a bit harsh. Since our prison system couldn't handle the sheer number of drunk drivers, I'd have to settle for a year suspension of driving privileges. But drunk driving is in a different solar system from distracted driving. Since you asked, I'm in favor of suspended driving privileges for distracted driving convictions. -

I don't drink. For whatever the state says is illegal. I can't believe this this position is so controversial. You put lives at risk when you drive drunk, buzzed, or high. Period. -

I have a pretty low tolerance for O-6s that drink and drive. Did he blow a marginal BAC that might be overturned by a blood test? Maybe. I’ll leave room for nuance. I personally wouldn’t write NJP till proven guilty or if wrongdoing is admitted. But I’d also remove him from any position of leadership until a conclusion is reached. Not driving drunk is one of the most basic of social responsibilities. An E-3 gets a chance to learn his way out of drunk driving. An O-6 has much, much higher expectations. Drunk driving convictions should have a mandatory 1-year jail sentence with driving privileges suspended. It’s one of the most deadly things in n the country. -
In my mid/late 30s I had completed several full Ironman races, was in Ironman shape, and could still only run a 10:20. /endhumblebrag. Your 10:16 is an outlier time, and I commend you for your old man fitness. Yes, it felt great to lap kids half my age, but I, for one, welcome my old man 40+ fitness chart! 😄

Question for fighter pilots... The abrupt pull of the stick at 0:33.... Aren't we talking black-out city pulling like that? I mean, I only flew Tweets but that kind of pull would have earned me a helmet smack from my IP. It's been a slow burn. 😄
