  1. It is not about masculinity, nor is this a problem intrinsic to the United States. It is people and how they respond under the fight-or-flight mechanism.
  2. There is no guarantee of success, but in the very least you provide a temporary distraction and draw his fire from the people trying to exit. That might also give other people a chance to follow your attempt in subduing him. I would be very disappointed in myself if I made it out safely while people's husbands, wives, and children were gunned down. I would rather die trying to do something versus living with the conscience of a coward or being shot running away.
  3. Thanks to all that responded. It has been awhile since I have been to DC, so I was not sure. I thought Silver Springs was right outside and Crystal City was fairly far South. I will need to be around Georgetown for a semester. The most I want to fork over is $1,600/month, so the cheaper the better. It does not have to be nice since it is only temporary. Though I do not want it to be in a shithole just in case I need to take a one-year lease and sublease the apartment. Is DC more expensive or cheaper than Boston or NYC, or about the same? Yeah, right. I do not mind it if it comes from good intentions.
  4. Actinium, aluminium, americium, antimony, argon, arsenic, astatine....
  5. I have heard that too, but I do not know how applicable it is. I looked up crime on City-Data and compared it to some bad neighborhoods I am familiar with. Columbia Heights seems OK, but Hillcrest Heights is a little shaky. Though I am not too sure it matters since I will only be there for a short while. I am most concerned with the best deal. Good to know. Silver Springs appears closer to where I need to go than Crystal City, but I may very well be wrong about that. Foggy Bottom is very close to where I need to be, but I only have so much money to work with. I have heard it is a very expensive area.
  6. Or confident. It was hyperbole for humor, but I do think being accustomed to either city has developed me further than if I learned anywhere less populated.
  7. I have to find temporary living in the DC area and I found some areas: Silver Springs, Hillcrest Heights, Columbia Heights, Falls Church, and Roslyn. Is anyone familiar with any of these and does anyone have any recommendations? I am not able to get down there to thoroughly search the neighborhoods, so I am relying on online reviews. Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the Metro pass really $230? That would be more expensive than the T and MTA combined. Is the metro worth it or should I bring a car?
  8. Thanks for all of the recommendations. I will look for some of them on Amazon since none of them were in the bookstore. I did acquire Operation Overflight by Francis Gary Powers though.
  9. Because I learned how to drive in the Boston area and NYC, therefore I am a phenomenal driver.
  10. Does anyone know of a good book about the Tuskegee Airmen? Or any good books about the Vietnam or Korean wars.
  11. By the end of my second term, a moon colony and a death ray.
  12. I think women are more likely to not pay attention and be distracted by another activity (talking on the phone) while trying to drive. That is really the only way I can think to explain problems with parking. It is not a difficult thing to do (though sometimes parallel parking is a bitch when other people do not park within the lines), so I find it hard to believe it is an actual mental problem for some women. Yeah, I noticed. I agree, but they are people who try to assess one's abilities based on genetics before giving that person a chance.
  13. "No and I cannot remember/do not think so."
  14. What does that have to do with gender equality?
  15. If you are only talking about ROTC scholarships, expand your horizons and look at all that are out there. There are thousands of scholarships available for college students, so I would assume you can get at least one. They have books at Barnes and Noble that detail a good number of them and outline what you need to do in order to be competitive for one. And like Rainman said, get a job.
  16. It does deal with particles on a subatomic scale when you consider the dick size of men who believe that tripe. Women are terrible drivers. Men are terrible drivers. In general, people are not very adept at anything that requires their attention and foresight. Am I the resident feminist because I am the only female? I only expect equality and not special treatment, therefore I am the opposite of a feminist. It is a sexist comment, but somewhat accurate. Generally women are not as good at spatial relationships. Of course there are many exceptions.
  17. It is a legit organization. The $30 membership for students seems a little high, but it is a good way to meet hopefuls and people in the industry. They have a large pool of scholarships, but I think you can get access to those without being in WAI. I have paged through the magazine and it is of a little less quality than AOPA's Flight Training. Nuggets of knowledge, and sometimes poor articles. The Ninety-Nines is a really good organization, and they have a chapter in San Antonio. You need to be a rated pilot to be an actual member, or hold a student pilot certificate to be an associate. Same scholarships listed.
  18. Then why Weyland? The human-like android? The Space Jockey wearing a similar suit in Alien as the one did in Prometheus? The scene of the alien at the end? It seems like despite all the avoidance to being an episode in the series, there are too many parallels drawn between Prometheus and Alien for it to not be a direct link. There were a lot of lapses in logic that I did not like, but it was a decent movie. Not worth seeing in 3D though, since there are only about four seconds of 3D footage.
  19. It was OK. It ended up raising more questions than answering them. For those that have seen it, here are some thoughts/questions (SPOILERS for those who have not): -Did the Engineers create that black mass or is it a naturally occurring substance? If I remember the really shitty movie (Aliens 4) right, they try to create one of the aliens by using Sigourney Weaver's DNA. They also managed to clone her by using part alien DNA? If the Engineers made that substance, then it would make sense why we would share common genomes. If not, then what the hell? -What was the point of the scene in the beginning? Where was that Engineer and why did he drink/eat that stuff? -Who decided to bring all of the flamethrowers aboard Prometheus? -Why did that medical pod have a preset procedure to remove parasitic entities from the human body? -They found six different cave paintings with the same constellation and think "we should keep looking," then find a seventh and say "we should find this planet?" -Who thought the cave paintings were an invitation? That is a huge leaping assumption on the part of that redhead chick, and the dying old guy decided to spend a ridiculous amount of dollars on sending a crew of people 3.27 x 1014 km to find the planet?
  20. No. I am quite alright without such things.
  21. "Napalm Girl" photograph turns 40. Interesting article about the subject of the picture.
  22. Who? Vertigo or me?
  23. I defend why I do not think it should be done in public and why businesses should not be forced to allow it in their establishments. It is about public decency and discomfort. It is not important why I think it is indecent. That is not up for debate since I am set in that belief. This discussion is over though. It was not going anywhere. Anyways, WTF... Wolverine impersonator died wrapped in three rolls of cling film and nylon sheet when bizarre sex game went wrong.
  24. Why not just keep your room clean? Funny you asked me if I watched Nat Geo. A quick search brought up a variety of articles and documentaries not just about Asia as a whole, but where I am from in particular. Expand your horizons, unless you only watch it for the nude tribes. People are bitter and spiteful. It is not restricted to one gender. Your last sentence backs that up, unless you are admitting to being a woman. Why would that a bad thing?
