Drone Pilots: We Don’t Get No Respect
guineapigfury replied to HercDude's topic in General Discussion
From what I've seen it's worse. I've seen 3 first term SOs reenlist in my 4 years in RPAs. I've lost count of the separations. My understanding is that Cannon had a 0% reenlistment rate for 1st term SOs last year. RPAs and Active Duty just do not mix. If we had any sense we'd hand a CAP to each state's ANG, supplement with contractor CAPs and get the regular Air Force completely out of the MQ-9 business. -

Wasn't the selection rate 95% last time? -

I think peer and subordinate review would at least highlight some of the douchers. You could put Jefferson on both sides of a nickel and he'd still be less two-faced than some of the SNCOs I've met in this career field. And we wonder why SOs don't reenlist. -

I don't dispute that, but I'm thinking of a swiss cheese model. 2 slices, or even 3, might close some of the holes that our current crop of O-6s slipped through. -
This is a fairly common attitude amongst brand new 18Xers. 6 months flying the line changes their mind in about 90% of them. Maybe you'll be different, but probably not.

I like the idea of peer review. Maybe give every officer of similar rank (+- 1) who's been in the same unit for at least a year a vote on whether their peer can have a DP. 75% required to promote, or something like that. -
FWIW, I have 2 friends in RPAs released back to their functionals (135 & 130) for the current VML. I'll standby and notify this board what they get. There may be hope, if only for a lucky few.

The term you're looking for here is "daywalker". -

Joining the active duty Air Force was the biggest mistake of my life. I wish I had joined the ANG; hopefully I'll be able to do just that in the next year. I graduated UPT, got my dream job flying the tanker then had it yanked away a couple years later when I got nonvolled to MQ-9s. -

RPA operators are home more, but it's a dogshit quality of life. Would not recommend, 0/10. -
Where do they find these guys? I'm starting to think ACSC stands for Airpower Clown School Course.

A suboptimal technique, but it appears her aim is impeccable.

What's not surprising is the absence of MQ-9 guys selling their souls at a discount. -

Where should I begin? What do I need to do? And other such questions.
guineapigfury replied to NorthCW's question in Q & A Forum
If you are set on a particular airframe, find a guard or reserve unit that flys that plane and start talking to them. -

I think these studies and surveys are sadly necessary since the higher-ups seem to be impervious to bad news delivered in any other format. Perhaps this is laying the groundwork for making pilot compensation competitive with airline compensation as the only feasible COA for pilot retention. -

If you want to see how 6 year commitments for pilots will work out, give it 2 years. Thats when 18Xers start hitting the end of their 6 year URT ADSCs in large numbers. -

Duck, you're on the right track. It's only 40ish pages and worth the read. On the plus side if they can't keep people in AGR slots, maybe there will be one open for me when I pull the ejection handle next year. After 4 years in RPAs I'd take any plane at any base. -

TLDR. The USAF would love to "collaborate" with the Airlines; the Airlines have no incentive to do so. -
Visit both campuses and choose the one with the higher density of beautiful young women.

If you can't kill people, don't join the military unless you're going to be a medic or chaplain.

Glad it all worked out.

ANG UAV to manned mission change
guineapigfury replied to 12xu2a3x3's topic in Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves
There won't be any of these changes in the foreseaable future. The demand is too high for RPAs. Local politicians likely doesn't care what kind of squadron they have, as long as they've got one. They might even prefer RPAs since they're less noisy. Some people just don't appreciate the Sound of Freedom and the sweet smell of JP-8. As far as facilities changes, you won't see any on the flightline since most units will be RSO only with no need for local aircraft. -
I want to be a military pilot. What can I do to start now to achieve this?
