New SECAF online Town Hall Meeting today 1530EST
17D_guy replied to panchbarnes's topic in General Discussion
I would have to agree. Even though I'm older, all the bosses talk about making us Ops.. which means checklists and maintenance actions. No mind set, not effects focused which you can do even as a B-shred in base comm. I blame AFSPC. Metrics are often, "how many tickets did you close" instead of, "Can they mission plan/work/be happy." I will caveat that i'm not an A shred, so perhaps I'm missing out. I'm too old for all the cool programs (15-yrs in a month). However, they sure aren't treating us like ops, nor are we getting any info about the future of the career field. The 2-star did seem cool. I did appreciate the brief. I am excited about the future. We also have some good Cyber (old-comm) dude coming up to 24AF leadership. Hopefully we'll get the last strand of Space/Missiles (we're cyber too guys!) out of there. -
New SECAF online Town Hall Meeting today 1530EST

Well at least she's in lock step with HAF on this one. They had a "cyber town hall" where they discussed the survey they sent to all 17D's. Number on gripe... what she just said. Too bad that 15yr retirement is too much of a cut. -
He also herniated a disk in his back being hunched over all the time.

So.. if your actions aren't guaranteed to effect a change, better to just do nothing at all? Nice... Yea, he could have used the NSA whistleblower program. I'm sure they're as independent as our IG. Not to mention the NSA has had to go back to the FISA many times with a "Oh.. well.. we weren't exactly truthful/complete with our last report/request." Your overlords must love you. I'm getting nasty-grams for not finishing the first module (4-months in). The extra 6 months is very helpful in my situation. Thankfully, it looks like my year-group, 09, is lagging in getting it done overall. I'm still getting the "get it done now" looks from the O6's. But everyone else seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach. For overall content, seems interesting so far. Nothing too out there.. mostly a time sink. As with a online-Masters, you'll get out of it what you put into it.

20th Air Force commander relieved of command

They've got some good quick highlights in this article as well - https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/12/19/amazing-details-from-the-drunken-moscow-bender-that-got-an-air-force-general-fired/ -
Working now with quite a few guard peeps and I've heard the "cover optional" thing more than once. It's one of those things that just.. doesn't seem hard to do and doesn't kill morale. You had to do it through initial training (Basic/OTS/etc). Perhaps that's part of their heritage?
-
I don't remember saying things supporting the crackdown where they grabbed books, family photos, whatever. I thought that was/is pretty stupid. I think the additional training is over blown, and the focus and leverage we're giving to the "victims of offensive material" is making us a weaker service overall. There are problems that need to be addressed, but rando swim suits isn't it. We had Maxim's confiscated here, but fitness mags were ok. Good job AF. I did side with Liquid on the sts, 69, etc stuff. I don't think those terms have a place in a professional environment. (I don't know how much you consider you Sq bar a professional environment.) I know many of you disagree and that's fine, you'll be leading the AF you can change it back later if you think it was a valuable part of your heritage. Perhaps it's just because I'm MSG that I don't get how "important" this is to everyone. Perhaps you need this stuff to kill people and break things, if so then I'm wrong. I do think it's sad the old songs, patches, and the like are being lumped in. That's true heritage of our former Airmen. Perhaps we don't use the same images/words anymore, but they shouldn't be buried, shunned and destroyed. That's a disgusting betrayal of what those men and women went through. My opinion on all of this has changed over the past 3 years as I've watched my wife struggle with the environment in her flying squadron and the blatant hostility that peers and leadership have directed towards her. I used to think the AF was fine with women and there were no problems. At least in her Sq I was wrong. Both words and actions have pushed half the females in her squadron to seek opportunities outside of the squadron and/or AF. This is in spite of the praise lauded on her by the people that have actually worked with her. It's doubly sad because she loves the flying job, but dreads the office. Like most of you all she wants to do is fly. The rumors are destructive, the targeting based solely upon the gender, the language coarse and sexualized for no reason. Should they speak up and complain? Sure they should.. but then they're ostracized more and become true outsiders in the office and on the jet. She just wants to be treated fairly and as everyone else. EDIT: Wanted to add that my grandfather retired from the AF and told both his daughter to not enlist in the AF due to how women were treated. That was back in the mid-70's. I'm not saying the service is the same as it is now, but I thought it was an interesting comment.

This...wait, commanders are really dedicating extra time to this? This was viewed as a positive experience with value added? Had to check what she Sq she "led", yep finance. Must have done it during one of their training windows, or querying the Service Center on why the paperwork the jacked wasn't getting paid. This made me puke - Trying has nothing to do with the percent of effort. Wonder if she'll get a Bronze Star for this.

This is due to the ACA, or some other change?.

How bad are the briefings/CBT's for off-base driving?

Nice article covering the overall failings of the Guard in AZ, from over a year ago. If it ain't broke, don't fix it I guess. https://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/20121013national-guard-republic-special-report.html?nclick_check=1 My personal fav

Knew someone in this exact situation. He let them repo it, still got a clearance. Handed them the keys when they showed up for the vehicle. You just don't want a bankruptcy and I have heard of that causing issues.

Doesn't highlight her "victim" status enough and the writing's not masculine enough. I'd like to meet the person that can complain about something like our promotion/PME system and know how to fix the whole thing. Or how about this, the AFI to wear "not loud" shoes at a PT test. What's the fix action for that. Allow all shoes, determine the brands/models we're allowed to wear, issue shoes. Or we could just do what we did before and not give a damn what shoe you're running in. Add sock color to that as well. Guess I'll stay in till 30 to fix that. /Done with troll On a side note talked with some squids about their rating/promotion system and didn't hate ours as much afterwards.

After the mother came forward, the AF didn't just go digging. See below - https://www.stripes.com/news/us/wilkerson-had-affair-that-produced-a-child-air-force-confirms-1.225660 https://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2013/04/25/help_wanted_at_the_pentagon_wilkerson_being_investigated_for_an_extramarital_aff Nobody knew about it until recently, so it wasn't exactly covered up. The woman was disgusted with how it all turned out, also probably with the fact that he was portrayed as some kind of integrity king. Dude should have just opted for retirement right after it was overturned, or did he just forget about this large, and growing skeleton in his closet? It smacks of arrogance, or naivety ,that this wouldn't come back with how public his whole thing is/was.

There's provisions for an officer to be retired at the last rank he served honorably if there's been problems.

Well sweet, we've got those too. Has the vending machines, microwave, vision and mission statement and squadron picture from 4 commanders ago right?

Possible correction: I think the promotion was red-lined upon original conviction and/or legal proceedings. Because Gen Franklin in one of the articles was upset Wilkerson wasn't going to have the promotion re-instated. Possible other: Didn't the woman he had the affair with come forward and that initiated the second investigation? I don't feel like reading through all the pages again.

Yea, As I've said before my issue wasn't with the conviction being overturned, I think that was the right call. It was with Lt Col Maj Wilkerson leaving the Gen hanging with his omission of any other things that could get him "in trouble". He could have retired after the overturned conviction and this additional headache, and hit to the integrity of Gen Franklin been totally avoided. Rules pretty clear about last rank served honorably and he's certainly not the first I've seen get popped. I think he's somewhat lucky since he had the affair as a Maj, they could have conceivably dropped him to Capt. I hope this issue is done with, and the damage it caused can start to be repaired. I don't know how it is in your communities, but with my peers/year-group this caused a lot of negativity. BTW - how much would the flight pay have been?

Thank you, and I knew this was somewhat the answer. But I thought, apparently incorrectly, that there would be more feedback among the pilot types to your bosses about who is/is not a leader. I figured around the bar, or debriefs, or whatever that a Sq CC would get the straight info. I've done this in my MSG Sq's and among peers, but I've also been counseled numerous times on a lack of tact. I figured you guys wouldn't have that limitation/concern.
-
So, as a non-pilot... how is this guy still getting promoted? If he's such a joke/ass to you guys, and you're bros.. why is he where he is? You guys are a small community, you know each other. I'm not trying to ask in an asinine/shoe/douche way. I just have a hard time understanding how a tight knit community has these issues. Isn't there some other O6 who just throws this bastard into the fire? How have his failings in the aircraft not been reflected in some career impacting way? Please note - small community isn't meant in a derogatory manner. I'm also on some good meds currently, so sorry if it don't make no sense. EDIT - Saw the bronze star in medals. Is that.. legit? No "V". Heard other stories on here about terrible circumstances with senior officers trying to get shiny chests.
-
Wait.. he's part of the problem for pointing out that "fair" is a matter of perspective? Not the people "making it fairer" for themselves (R or D)? Or you just mean all liberal thoughts, and/or thoughts you don't agree with, are the problem? Of course this happened - The GOP changed House rules so only the Majority Leader can bring up bills that would end the shutdown. They removed that privilege from the rest of the Reps. Guess it's a good thing the Senate will get some work done.
