Beaver An AK build is not something you want to undertake unless you have to tools and know-how to do so. This site gives you a good idea of what it takes just to build one. Obviously if you buy the receiver already built it's a bit easier, but it's still a lot of work that requires skill and expertise! Best to wait until some of the bigger online places (AIM, J&G, etc) have some in stock. For an entry-level AK, I would suggest something Romanian; but understand that many that are built by Century Arms have been known to have canted front sights and gas blocks, so it's always preferable to be able to look the rifle over before buying. As for a "looks decent and runs perfect" AK, as long as you don't hang all that TAPCO crap on one, it will be easy to accomplish the former. As for the latter, there's one thing that is tough to do and that is break an AK! They are definitely NOT a finicky rifle! Cheers! M2
  2. Sounds like you get it... Best of luck to ya, but always have a back-up plan! Cheers! M2

I'm good with that, just let me know where I can pick up the pallet! Damn, would've been nice. What took ya so long to find the forum?!? I've got no shortage of AKs, I just am a bit insatiable when it comes to them. I just ordered six sets of Balkans War battlefield pick-up furniture from Apex, this is the pic they had with the ad… Im hoping to do a BFPU Romanian when I get a chance, Ive got a SAR-1 and a WASR-10/63 but both are in pretty good shape and Im gonna try and find a WASR that is already a bit beat-up so I wont feel so bad when I put steel-wool to the receiver. Ive got a Khyber Pass complete with a AK-74 folding stock and Russian red furniture on it but it is in pristine condition. I also plan to build another that looks more like it was picked up off the plains of Afghanistan. AKs can be very addicting, and the thing most people find odd is that I don't own a single AR! I don't see what not. Unless you are separating under less-than-honorable conditions, you should be entitled. And even then, all those folks need is a letter from their convening authority authorizing their dependents and stuff to be moved, if I recall correctly. Cheers! M2

Brother, if you need to rid yourself some of those AK-47s before you pack out, let me know. I'm sure you'll pass through San Antonio on your way out of Corpus... Cheers! M2

Oh, and speaking of new acquisitions; snagged this yesterday... It appears one of the previous owners tried to put tiger stripes on it (barely visible in the above pic, which is from the seller), the guy I bought it from said it was painted black when he got it and he stripped it down and refinished it the best he could. I already got a cleaning rod and black Chinese sling for it at the local gun show yesterday, and spent a lot of yesterday afternoon cleaning it up. The gas piston was a bit of a mess, but I got that sorted. I snagged it because 1) it was cheap and the seller threw in three 30-round mags, a 10-round one and 90 rounds of ammo in the deal and 2) I have a SKS-M with a Monte Carlo stock and needed a thumbhole version to fill out the collection. Cheers! M2

Whoa! Wait! You get to Dobroslavtsi, and have access to AKs (plus parts and accessories)? We've got to talk, my new friend! Actually, I think I recognize you from GunBoards, right? Cheers! M2
  7. OK, if you had to do this for a living; wouldn't you wear more than a thin plastic face protector and some cheap rubber gloves?!? And WTF, the Canucks don’t use deodorizer in their planes?!?

Oh, and while not through the windshield, this one still belongs with the others... I guess it was his friend's fault for sticking his face outside of the truck like a dog. I bet he was probably puking when it happened. Lesson learned: Always puke inside someone's truck, no matter what they tell ya!

Yeah, it's pretty remarkable and disturbing at the same time!

Lots of weird shit on that forum! But honestly, there was a guy with the Wolfhounds at Ramstein back in the late 90s who had a picture of him and his kid as the background on his computer in the squadron. "Someone" did the same thing to the pic, and set it as the new background. I think they password-protected it or something, as he couldn't figure out how to swap it back. It was pretty hilarious...

That's ridiculous, I had a 1100cc Honda sport-tourer while at Ramstein back in the late 90s and it wasn't anywhere near that much. I paid something like $75/mo for full coverage, and was surprised when it really didn't drop much when we moved to Texas. I know Harleys are popular in Europe, and I know firsthand how much of a blast it is to ride a bike there (tell him to check out the Pfalzwald southeast of Kaiserslautern for some great nearby riding); but there's no way I pay would that much to insure a motorcycle! Just to note, when I was stationed in the UK in the early 80s I did buy British insurance for it. He might check the places just outside base to see if they can provide coverage at a more reasonable rate. Technically, USAA does insure motorcycles. It is through Progressive, but it is through them and I have two on my policy. You pay for them when you pay for your other vehicles and what not, but it is through USAA... Cheers! M2

  20. Actually, "will my religion effect my chances of being selected for UPT?" is something you'll have to ask yourself! First, how devout are you? Do you perform Ṣalāt five times a day? What about Sawm? Would you be considered exempt because you are a "soldier?" What about the increased study and contemplation during the last ten nights of Ramadan? Will you perform a hajj during your service? I am far from an expert on Islam, but I do know it has rituals and practices as most religions do. While the service does its best to allow for any and all practices of faith, there are obvious limitations as I am sure you can imagine. That said, you won't be the first Muslim pilot in the USAF. It's all a matter of priorities, abilities and luck! Cheers! M2
  21. From the AFA reporting on this... The 390 BG (H) "Square-J" flew out of Parham (a.k.a. RAF Framlingham) during the war, and I used to visit the museum in the old control tower when I was stationed at Bentwaters in the early 80s... Sadly enough, there is a section of the museum's website dedicated to the return of the Liberty Belle to the UK back in 2008 here. Even sadder to read that had emergency equipment been able to reach the aircraft, she could have been saved. God bless her! Cheers! M2
  22. Fair enough, I've corrected the title (but obviously the article titles remain as reported). Cheers! M2
  23. Agreed. A tragic loss indeed! Cheers! M2
