Let us know how it goes, I've never gone on a Sunday. I'll be a Class B bachelor next weekend as the wife and kids are off to my mother's for a week. Anyone interested in meeting up to shoot let me know... Cheers! M2

Update From the Bentwaters list...
-
It has been in my very limited experience out there. These last two Saturdays I was by myself for the first hour (and I usually don't stay more than an hour). I would expect that to change as we get closer to hunting season, but for the most part it doesn't appear to every get too crowded! But the other ranges around here tend to be crowded on the weekends as well, that is why I love this "exclusive" range! Cheers! M2

2 Nope, just call the Hunting Lodge to see if the range is open, then get onto Bullis and stop at the Range Control office (the gate guard will give you directions if you need them). Go to the Hunting Lodge and sign in. If you get a season pass ($25), then bring the name, caliber and serial numbers of all the weapons you plan to bring out to shoot. I just gave them a printed list. If you get a season pass, you'll also get a range decal so you won't have to stop at the Range Control office again. If you 'pay as you go,' it's $4/day and you get no range decal. I went out again this morning at 0800 and was alone (except for the RSO) for the first hour. I brought my four 1911s and he never looked up from his newspaper. The guy might think I am a bit of a nut, as even if I am the only one on the range I ask for a 'cease fire/range cold' as well as a 'range hot.' I just prefer to keep the same procedure no matter if I am by myself or if the range is full of shooters. One of the main reasons I am so happy shooting at Bullis is that my previous range, the Bullethole, has gotten very lax in enforcing range safety and it seems like every time I went there I witnessed some buffoonery and it was only a matter of time before someone would get accidentally shot or killed. Therefore, I am steering clear of the place. Cheers! M2

Since there were questions concerning calibers allowed at Bullis, I found the reg (FSH Reg 350-2) that listed what can be shot: Cheers! M2

T-bonez Thanks, the good news is she now said I could have it as a "gift." The bad news is I had hoped my wife could just bring it back with her when she and the kids visited next week; but I found out that Federal law prohibits any handguns from being acquired outside of your state of residence being brought into your state without going through a FFL: Sure, it is a commonly ignored law; but since this is my sister we are talking about, and my wife is also involved, I am taking the 100% legal route. As such, my wife is going to pick it up and ship it to a buddy of mine who has a FFL. So it'll cost $60 or so to UPS it, but at least it will all be above board. Also, she says she's kept it cleaned and oiled, and that it is in good shape. But I did go back and ask her if she knew she could shoot .38 Specials in it as well. I am not sure she realizes that, and the lighter round might make it more tolerable for her; but knowing my sister she probably isn't too big on having it around the house so if she wants to give it to me, I am not going to argue with her! Cheers! M2 p.s. Oh, and it is a GP100!

OK, I can research this (and I will); but I thought I would seek the collective wisdom of those here... My sister has a Ruger .357 magnum revolver, 4 inch barrel, blue steel that she bought back in 1990 when the Gainesville murders were going on. I suspect it looks like this one or is pretty similar... She hasn't shot it in five years and wants to get rid of it. I've offered to take it and although she hasn't mentioned a price, I wanted to figure out what would be fair. The pistol probably doesn't have 50 rounds through it, and I don't know the condition as she isn't a gun aficionado like her little brother! I would suspect it isn’t that bad, and the wife and kids are heading out her way to visit next week and she offered to have my wife bring it back with her if she’s willing. As such, if anyone has any idea of what a good price range would be, or any experience with this particular gun, please speak up. I have a 1954 Colt .357 (pre-Python) that was my late father’s and I would like to put it in a display case and have this Ruger to shoot (the Colt is a hoot to shoot!). Cheers! M2

Oddly enough, we were discussing this very thing this morning. The only explanations we could come up with are either a) he was a victim of a Marine Corps drawdown after Vietnam, or b) for some reason life in the Army looked better than the Marine Corps! The Army was grabbing all the aviators it could after Vietnam, so maybe they made him an offer he couldn't refuse! Still, it is a classy way to end a career!

Next Saturday I am taking my four 1911s out to Bullis. If anyone wants to come out, I'll be there around 0800 and if you want to shoot them, bring some .45 ACP with ya! And if you plan on going but haven't gotten the info from me yet, once you are on Bullis you will need to check into Range Control before entering the range (the training range, not the shooting range) and the Outdoor Recreation Center before going to the shooting range. The gate guards will direct you to the Range Control office (easy to find), Range Control will give you directions to the Outdoor Recreation Center (it's a short and easy drive) and the Outdoor Recreation Center will give you directions to the shooting range (again, not hard to find). Cheers! M2

T-bonez It has 50, 100, 200 and 300 yard berms; I shot the SKS there again yesterday and was restricted to 100 yards. For pistols, you can set your target anywhere within the 50 yard range. By the way, I had the place to myself for an hour yesterday. Another group showed up as I was getting ready to leave; but for my time it was all mine! Cheers! M2

I don't remember the dates of the C-rats we ate at Basic (I went through in Oct 81), but we were given them when I was a SP augmentee at RAF Bentwaters from 82-84, and we used to joke that they were the ones our fathers refused to eat during the Korean War! I don't think they were that old; but as long as the can wasn't bulging and they didn't smell bad, we were told to eat 'em! Cheers! M2

Forty years later, Army colonel Henry Moak still loves his pound cake! Moak capped off his retirement ceremony by digging into an old can of military 'C' rations pound cake from 1969, which he brought back from Vietnam... :salut: to you, COL Moak, on your retirement! And for using a vintage P-38 can opener to open the cake! Cheers! M2 "Get some!"

I shot my SKS there last Saturday and the RSO didn't bat an eye (except for all the brass it was spitting!). Cheers! M2

Toro Just to dogpile on the minor point you started... Whereas what you stated is correct under Arabic naming conventions, the "bin Laden" family appears to have adopted the "Westernization" of a family name due to business reasons. Osama's father was Muhammed Awad bin Laden (Muhammed son of Laden), killed in 1967 when his company Beechcraft crashed during landing at Usran in southwest Saudi Arabia. As such, Osama's name--under conventional naming practives--should have been Osama bin Muhammed; and his son, as you said, would have been Saad bin Osama. But you are right, most Americans do not understand Arabic naming conventions. What the NPR source should have said was "We make a big deal out of him because of his father." Either way, the little fucker supported his father so pin a medal on the glorious bastard that shot the HELLFIRE! Cheers! M2

Lord of War, great movie... is one of my favorite scenes... (I guess the embedded YouTube feature no longer works! I will write it up) Cheers! M2

HOSS I think you need to go, and take your camera with you. This will be a monumental event, and needs to be documented for the world to see! Let this forum serve that purpose... Cheers! M2

T-bonez That .375 H&H is sweet! Just when I finally got all my itches scratched, I now may have another! Honestly, you may want to just bring it out and ask the RSO if you can shoot. I understand the month prior to hunting season (October) is a bad time to go out there as the place gets packed with hunters dialing in their rifles; but outside of that timeframe you might just find yourself the only guy out there and the RSO will allow it. Worse case, you don't shoot it. And I don't think the two-gun rule is strictly enforced, I plan to take my four 1911s out in a couple of weekends and I will just have two out at a time. I also don't see any problems with swapping weapons out from your vehicle. As for the Glock kB issue, I believe most of it was due to overpowered reloads and as a former Glock fan (since owning an XD I now have a new favorite), I wouldn't let it stop me from owning one especially considering the military sales program they have. That said, for the money I think the XD is a much better pistol! Maybe I should start saving for a XD-45 Tactical next! Cheers! M2

Concur, you're not my Mom, so don't use the title! Seriously, I suspect this is someone dicking around with us. Who could be offended by such lovely examples of humanity?!?

Replied, as with the other two. Perhaps a BaseOps day at Bullis is in order for the near future! Cheers! M2

For anyone in San Antonio who is interested, we recently got information on how to shoot at Camp Bullis, the Army training post in NW SA. They have range open to DoD ID card holders on the weekend that--depending on circumstances--can include targets up to 300 yards out. Annual fees are a mere $25! I shot out there this past Saturday and it was great. PM me and I will send you the details. Cheers! M2

Yes, Wolf's got a good point; you get your masters the first couple of years you are in, then you retire 15+ years later and it is somewhat dated. I got my first masters later in my career than most (I finished it when I was a major), but I still went after a second one after I retired as: 1) it supports what I do as a contractor, and 2) my company sponsors it. That is not to say you will have the same opportunity when it's your time; but it is just something to consider. That said, don't let anyone convince you that a masters degree will ever do you harm, no matter how old it is. As someone who looks at a fair amount of resumes, having that advanced degree will always put you above someone without one (as long as there isn't too much difference in all other areas of experience). Plus, unless I am mistaken or the policy has changed once again, you'll pretty much need one to make Lt Col. Again, none of the above is all-inclusive, YMMV and all that other crap! Cheers! M2

I had two E40s (mid-80s 3-series) while I was stationed in Germany. Great cars, very balanced and a hoot to drive. The first one took a Land Rover head-on and I walked away, combined speed of the accident had to be 70-80 MPH (fucker drifted into my lane on a small mountain road). No airbags, no ABS, just solid German engineering! While TDY to Patch in 93, a Lavy LT, Army SGT and I stopped by the big BMW dealership right outside the gate. There was a beautiful 850i on the floor that we figured if we pooled all our paychecks, we might be able to afford it! Unfortunately, I was heading to Slovakia, the SGT Albania, and the LT the Czech Republic if I recall correctly; and we couldn't figure out how to time-share the car! One of the reasons I love my Jeep so much is that it reminds me of my BMWs. RWD, everything’s mechanical (no power windows or locks), and an engine I can do most of the maintenance on myself. Of course, it doesn’t drive anything like the Beemer (“the Ultimate Driving Machine”), but it is just as much fun. Cheers! M2
