What option is available to the 1-year takers from last year? If it's the Tier 6 (CE) option that forces at least 22 YAS that's not a nice thing to do to folks that gave you the benefit of the doubt to stick around to see if you fixed things. I know last year's PSDM gave no guarantees but extra mandatory years tacked on the end just because that's what's normally given to 5yr contract expirees is an insult and oversight if you ask me. I suppose the devil is in the details of this year's PSDM. I'm not a 1-year taker but I know quite a few that are anf would go to 20 years military service but not 22 YAS that'll now probably punch and look for AFRES options to get to 20.

I'm in the 12-14 year block that got the double raise. Was $265 more after taxes this month.

Whatever you use, make sure there are 6 to 9 references to the low level entry time on there because that never requires last-minute changes.

The website says "late Spring" I'm expecting an update on June 20th to say "mid summer" followed by release of the Bonus on Sept 15th with a due date from applicants of Sept 30th.

Running functions in Excel is nice for making numbers match a desired reality. By his description, that's what A-1 has been doing. Actually solving the problem would take talking to and listening to folks who are bonus-eligible and finding out what it would take to get them to stay. (Hint: it's gonna take more than money)

Not specific to the SFO 777… I don’t think a lack of hand-flying skills is entirely the problem. Rather, it’s a lack of SA on where a pilot should be on the automation to hand-flying spectrum. As a T-1 instructor, I was often the first IP to teach students how to use the autopilot system. At first, the system isn’t intuitive and almost without fail, they would end up fixating on getting the damn flight director to do what they wanted it to when hand-flying and looking outside would’ve been more appropriate. Later, when they could use it right, a simple misplaced button push or unexpected value spun in would again cause automation fixation. Often, they wouldn’t even realize they were so fixated. Hell, I can remember a few times I fixated on it in the C-17 and T-1. I doubt any pilot with an automation system has never unknowingly fixated on it. Sometimes automation is appropriate, sometimes hand-flying is appropriate. Knowing how to use each is relatively simple to learn; it’s knowing WHEN to use each that’s the hard part. That said, obviously a baseline knowledge of how to fly through the entire spectrum of automation/hand-flying is fundamental here, and sounds like it was a contributing factor to the specific 777 situation.

Any chance of getting the unrelated crap moved/deleted from this thread to clear it up and stick to the subject? On topic: We talk a lot about how getting a Masters degree takes away from our ability to be good pilots. Totally false. It's the pointless additional duties that are taking valuable time away from our ability to be good pilots. I simply don't have time to plug away on a masters at work with all the other pointless stuff I'm doing. What the AAD really takes away from is quality family time with the wife and kids. When I'm not being overworked, I ended up spending far too much of my "free" time working towards a degree I never wanted or needed. I'm nearly finished with it..and now I doubt I'll ever finish. If they change the rules on me again, so be it.

Don't be afraid to say "no" when asked from above to do more with less. Doing more with less is a slippery slope in a time of dwindling resources. Don't be afraid to say "yes" when asked from below for support to fix a broken process. It'll empower your people to want to solve problems rather than begrudgingly live with them. Cut the fat that wastes everyone's time...including and especially your own. Budgets matter, but it's not our money. Time is ours. It's our most valuable possession. Don't waste it.

When does he PCS? You have a lot riding on variables you can't control. Not that AAD is the be-all, end-all. But, if you're worried about when it will show up in your records, you'd think the sooner the better for you.

What board? There is no Maj board this year. It's posponed to a TBD date in CY2014. How do you know you'll be done a month or two before the board?

Hoss, I'm with you. The promotion rates are pretty high. Most dudes are gonna make it. And AAD, SOS, etc. don't tell the whole story. AFPC perpetuates the BS by publishing the numbers broken down by PME and AAD (and nothing else). They are the ones turning it into a numbers game and leadership does nothing to fix that perception among their people. While we're on the subject of Commanders...you bring up the no-frills push notes that go with OPR/PRFs. Those are great. Usually tell the no-kidding story. Good AND bad. That's the kind of stuff that gets a dude into a wing or group exec job or shuffled into a dark hole somewhere. Wouldn't it be great if THAT was the performance report? We wouldn't give a shit about all these PME and AAD numbers. Why is it we're so afraid of giving honest negative feedback? If the Sq or Group CC will say it up the chain, why not down?
