  1. I see. Also didn't realize that the EAA prez was no longer a Poberezny...
  2. Should be the last revival of this thread... Ex-astronaut Lisa Nowak forced out of Navy
  3. IIRC, that old Bug is the EAA President's OSH ride.
  4. I think that's part of the aftermath of the DE ANG tornado incident from several years back... but we'll let nunya answer for certain. edit - Delaware Guard battles tornado, flood
  5. Some contributions to the list... War by Sebastian Junger - the basis for the movie Restrepo Islands of the Damned by R.V. Burgin - E.B. Sledge's (of With the Old Breed fame) squad leader in the USMC's Pacific island-hopping campaign Red November by W. Craig Reed - interesting account of Cold War submarine ops CW2 by Layne Heath - Vietnam helicopter war fiction North SAR and No Place to Hide by Gerry Carroll - more Vietnam helicopter war fiction, but from the Navy's perspective (Carroll was a retired LCdr with a DFC, among other things, and was a high school classmate of Tom Clancy)
  6. Just read this on my last trip. Concur that he's not the greatest writer, but it was a good read.
  7. SECNAV censures former (read: RETIRED) fighter squadron commander WTF is with the Navy witch-hunt this year... edit: needs more cowbell
  8. I've actually seen a couple TV commercials for that. Concur - WTF/YGBSM/???
  9. Latest member of the "27 Club"
  10. The Marines will be concerned with what they're told to be concerned with. They'll also learn quickly (and probably painfully) what on the aircraft can be beaten into submission and what has to be handled like eggs... just like every other airframe the Corps flies. The Osprey folks have gotten used to working on a finicky, delicate aircraft. The Harrier folks have gotten used to working on a finicky, delicate aircraft. I am certain that the USMC F-35 maintainers will get used to their new, finicky, delicate aircraft if they ever get them in quantity.
  11. This made me laugh... but it's probably closer to how the conversation actually went than any of us want to know.
  12. I've heard nothing about a hiring freeze in my SQ...
  13. A buddy of mine who's also an AK nut calls those rifles "TAPCO-fucked".
  14. The Marines were touring the boneyard as well...
  15. Happens to me as well... and only here on Baseops.
  16. IIRC, the only difference between the Sonex and Waiex is the Waiex's V-tail; the flying qualities of both airplanes are very similar (I recall reading this in a Kitplanes article - I don't have first-hand experience with either airplane in any capacity). There's a not-insignificant number of builders who won't build an RV-x simply because "they're a dime a dozen" (even if an RV-x is the best fit for their personal mission), and choose their E-AB airplane based on what's not common within their EAA chapter/flying club/airport/social group/whatever. Maybe he just liked the looks of the V-tail...
  17. Here's the American Sonex Association website, a Sonex online builder's log, and two different forum threads with some info about the Sonex vs. RV-12 debate.
  18. Jesus, what a mess for the kid. Not sure what I'd do if I were in his shoes.... never go near an airplane again, or buy every big-jackpot lottery ticket I could find. Most GA airplanes only have a couple gallons unusable, if that. 1-2 gallons of 100LL doesn't cause an inferno... but then again, one man's inferno is another man's campfire.
  19. Congrats. I finally wised up after 11 years in the Corps...
  20. CAC holder. It's an Icon vest from their "Mil-Spec" line; they're made to be "friendly" for .mil motorcycle riders and their requirements.
  21. We're not AD, so of course we know how to have a good time. *Applies to both AFRC and ANG. edit: spelins
  22. I'm thinking a #2 engine problem - the prop appears feathered on #2, while the other 3 are in fine pitch. In any case, it's a sad loss to the warbird community, but she brought her crew "home" safely. In the end, that's what matters. Tired of reading the word "crash" associated with this mishap, too...
  23. The Greatest Generation. Might be a cliche, but it's still true.
  24. I can't believe I have to ask this... Anyone with Windows 7/IE9 having issues with using their CAC reader to get on the Portal, sharepoint, etc.? I tried using the reader without ActiveClient, since I've got the newer ID that supports that with Win7. Worked for a few days, then got the "IE cannot display the website" screen. Installed ActiveClient, still the same thing. Anyone?? EDIT: Disregard. Remembered something I read in the office a while back about un-checking SSL 2.0 in the IE Properties tabs. Worked, problem solved.
