Saddle up for Syria? Or Op Deny Christmas '13
Kenny Powers replied to brickhistory's topic in General Discussion
Just saw this (though it was written on the 16th). Leaving F-16's in Jordan: https://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/06/16/us-to-keep-f16s-missiles-in-jordan-post-exercise.html?ESRC=airforce-a.nl -
Been drinking different beers from the Revolution Brewing company lately. Good stuff, especially their IPA, Anti Hero.

Yes, because you know what happens when you piss off an engineer: Contrary to popular belief, we are all ######ing badasses, and we are smarter than everyone else .

The disconnect is the customer. The person between the engineers designing this stuff and the end users flying it. The customer has 6900 different metrics to juggle and tries to do it all on a budget. Since they are the ones buying the shit we're designing, they get to make the calls at the end of the day when it comes to the final design. A lot of the time that means a suboptimal design to meet budget constraints.

After reading the article, it sounds like that is what she did. No confirmation on size though... ETA: Just realized I am probably the only one who read the article haha...work is slow today...

There are people at your base who can help you figure out what is going on with your packet, I would be asking them. They can follow up with the people at NGB. 7 weeks isn't that long though, so I would be a little more patient. You might get all dates at once (not likely) but I would suspect you to get AMS/IFS/UPT initially (assuming you have to go to IFS).

California ANG "toxic culture"?

I did, couldn't get it to post correctly from my phone so I deleted. Sarcasm for the grammar police but the moment is gone... -

I agree with herkbum and O, your plan sounds fine, especially if you have time on your side. Just not the most direct route to achieving your "dream". Just keep in mind the time line involved, the 30 year old mark can be somewhat misleading. When I was applying, I was older, and a couple boards that I applied to said it was their policy not to interview anyone older than 27, I was 27.5. I have seen 27.5, 28, and 28.5 in writting on a few websites for units as well. Hell, even my SQ/CC told me that he would have preferred to hire younger guys, all else being equal. He ended up hiring the two oldest dudes on that board, both with over 10 years as prior E. -

I think you are missing the point. Pilot slots are extremely competitive, any way you slice it. If that truely is your ultimate goal, you should be focused solely on that. To what extreme is really dependent on how bad you want it and other responsibilities in life. While I personally think being prior E has its advantages, it's definitely not a must and some dudes will tell you it doesn't necessarily matter at all (plenty of dudes get picked up off the street). If you want a pilot slot, start putting packages together and applying. Rinse and Repeat, learn, get better, get hired. It can take time, some guys apply for years, flying to interviews on their own dime and spending every dollar they have on making their application better. -
AMS (Academy of Military Science) Questions
Kenny Powers replied to a topic in Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves
Are you starting in the next class (13-04)? If so, I would bring them so you can function. Nobody really gives a shit if you are sick unless it creates a situation where you cannot participate in the course. I think you need, as a minimum, to be able to participate in 85% of the training to pass. You will take a UA, so I would bring them just incase there are any questions about whether or not they were prescribed to you, that way you can just show them the bottles. Thats probably documented in your medical records from your last base but you never know. -
IBS/IBD (Irritable Bowel Syndrome/Disease)
Kenny Powers replied to Spartacus's topic in Aviation Medicine
Not a doc but my wife has UC. All the civilian doctors we have seen wanted to do this, pretty much saying it's too difficult to determine what is going on without actually going in and taking a look. Feeling "better" is subjective, hard to determine if you are fully in remission. Based on the results of the scopes, they adjusted her treatment (more aggressive at first to help get into remission, then backed it off once in remission). Pretty sure doing another scope one year after initial diagnosis was their standard. Also, now that you have UC, they claim you are at much higher risk statistically for colon cancer. Annual scopes starting at like year eight (since initial diagnosis) have been highly recommended by our docs. -
AMS (Academy of Military Science) Questions

Change in regs. as of Oct. 1 2012 requires you to do a PT test before you go. It's worded something like "no sooner than 30 days prior to AMS but no later than 14 days prior to departing your home station", which might mean, if you cannot pass that test, they probably wont send you. Might be the "solution" to what mp5g is talking about... -
Guys at my unit (pilot selects) are getting $10K after graduating AMS as a bonus. Not sure what the stipulations are but I have heard of other pilot selects from other units/states that get it as well, but not all. I also have friends who have gone through AMS (non pilots) who are in different states and not getting it. Think USAA has some kind of starter loan for newly comissioned officers, not sure about the exact details (would help you out more but I have a terrible internet connection at my current location).

Just a data point here. Myself and six of my friends got hired last year with ANG units. We are all prior Mx (Avionics or Crew Chiefs), minus one civilian non prior. All of us came from fighter squadrons, so I don't have any insight on enlisted flyers. The majority of prior E types that have been hired in the two ANG fighter squadrons I have been in have come from the flightline. Not all, but a significant majority.

Just wear PT uniform. They will have you guys hanging out in a room dedicated to FC-1 applicants in between exams, so you will have a place to leave whatever you bring with you so you dont have to carry it around everywhere.

Spoke to base housing at Sheppard today, they referred me to this site to get all the paperwork and everything started: https://www.housing.af.mil/sheppard/ Looks like base housing is contracted to another company, Balfour Beatty Communities, their website for Sheppard is: https://sheppardfamilyhousing.com/defaultFamily.aspx?cid=15

Any updates on the on base/off base conversation? My wife and I are headed there in a few months, I just assume we would stay on base for the convenience. Reading through this thread, it sounds like base housing for O's was either renovated or some new housing was built. Is it all updated now or are some houses renovated and others aren't? I plan on getting in touch with the base housing office after the holidays but figured I would check in here for advice from dudes out there currently.

Whhhaaaat? I haven't even called the number yet to triangulate the position...

Whoops, I quoted the wrong post originally. What I meant to quote was: 10 digits, the first three are the same as an area code of the state your profile says you live in, and the number doesn't change when someone likes one of your posts. Maybe it's all a coincidence.

Almost seems like a phone number...
