  1. I wasn't interested in the 5 year bonus, but 10 years sounds a lot more tempting. Where do I sign? Seriously, how do these people come to such conclusions? (If, of course, this is accurate, but it sounds like something AFPC would do). I think in a year or so they will realize that the only viable option for them is a stop loss of some measure.
  2. At least we didnt waste a lot of time and effort on the whole captain promotion thing. Bang-bang guidance, never fails to come up short...
  3. This conversation sounds somewhat familiar. At any rate, i knew a dude who was randomly accused of this type of thing in a foreign country, it usually doesnt work out too well for the accused, regardless of whether or not they are actually guilty of doing anything wrong. This poor fellow doesnt stand a chance against the sexual assault witch hunt. His career is over either way.
  4. Ugh. It doesn't matter whose rights you care about at this point, the new precedent has been set. Constitutional rights are no longer rights, they are privileges, to be assigned and revoked at will. Oh the plus side, we'll have great stories to tell our grand kids about living through the systematic dismantling of one of the most seminal documents in human history and the subsequent demise of the republic. Sorry Ben, but I think you knew we wouldn't be able to keep it for long...
  5. Thanks for the citation, I obviously needed that. At any rate, the disconnect between us is that you seem to hang your hat on modern political law, I prefer old fashioned common law-which was used as the basis for our Constitution and, for that matter, our country. I have plenty of good reads, PM me if you are interested. If not, you might start with "Three Felonies A Day" by Harvey Silvergate. And I assure you that my dismay is genuine, but it's equally divided between recent events and the unconscionable reactions of so many Americans. But, then again, I guess that's why there's a bell curve.
  6. This is one of the most frightening statements I have read in a long while-at every level. We as military officers and Americans ought to have a better understanding of how the Constitution came about and why the Bill of Rights is so revolutionary. At this rate, why should we even bother having a trial? He's already been found guilty in the media. Seig Heil? I think your witness testimony is required elsewhere.
  7. The Reichstag is burning.
  8. I would like to see some actual evidence linking this kid to the bombing. But, since they decided to take away his rights, guess we might not get a chance to. Take note, your rights are no longer endowed to you by your creator, they are partitioned to you by your government, all they have to do is use the "T" word. Plus, I've seen "combat" zones in Afghanistan with less firepower allocated to them than what we sent after a single teenager. I don't think we're asking the right questions here.
  9. I certainly agree that we will not see a return to the gold standard anytime soon. However, there has only ever been one end to any fiat currency, when exactly we will see that end is hard to say, I believe we will see it within our lifetimes-well maybe not within Rainman's lifetime-but yours and mine for sure. There are countless case studies which detail the life and times of the government printing press. Furthermore, the utilization of gold and silver coinage would certainly not be anachronistic, many everyday US coins contained actual silver until quite recently. Unfortunately, currency devaluation is a temptation as old as humanity, and eventually gold and silver coinage is replaced with fiat replicas. In response, and in accordance with Gresham's law, money that contains actual gold/silver will disappear from circulation until such a time as its use is again warranted-which usually coincides with the emergence of wheelbarrows and black markets. These economic trends are not theoretical, they are in fact quite real, and we have witnessed their existence time and time again. That does not necessarily mean however, that our country will descend into socioeconomic chaos and anarchy. More often than not, it just means that the middle class citizen will lose his shirt if he has put his savings all in one basket or bank (Cyprus?). As for the Liberty Dollar example, I highly recommend "The Creature From Jekyll Island," by G Edward Griffin, it may shed some light into how the Federal Reserve might feel about such competition and explain their actions. At any rate, while I certainly am a nut-job, the only gold I hoard is the gold I bought for my grill-which I actually paid for in gold I might add. PM me if you're looking for some more interesting reads.
  10. 5000 years of human history would vehemently disagree with you. Gold is actually the only substance humans have used as currency with intrinsic, timeless value. No it does not generate cash flow, but if you think creating a currency backed by gold is worse than creating a currency out of thin air, than I think you probably read too much from Paul krugman. I would argue that the value of gold doesn't really change, it's actually the value of the fiat currency that we use to measure the value of gold that changes.
  11. Actually, I get tinfoil hair extensions woven directly into my luscious locks. It helps tremendously.
  12. Disagree. By the time you retire 3 mil will be a lot of change...it just won't be measured in US dollars anymore, at least not in the contemporary sense. Not sure what exactly it will be, maybe "IMFs", maybe bitcoins, who knows. But 3 mil USDs certainly won't get you 3 mil of whatever they fabricate to replace it.
  13. So why are you paying double on your mortgage payments on property that your renter will pay off for you? At 3-4% interest, and ~5-10% inflation, I'm in absolutely no rush to pay the bank back. A second mortgage should be easy, tons of guys have 2 or 3. Take the extra cash and use it for a down payment, or top quality scotch. Just don't use USAA. As for tax questions, a tax attorney is probably your best bet and definitely worth the few bucks (don't go cheap and use a regular tax accountant, that can bite you). I do my own taxes but I make most of it up as I go along, probably not the best route for most people.
  14. They have nuclear weapons!?! Oh, that old chestnut again. I think this administration is probably just trying to play their cards better than W did in 2003.
  15. Good old battleship diplomacy hard at work.
  16. Our entire medal/recognition program is an embarrassment. Like so many other aspects of our military, it has been perverted to serve the interests of careerist. Our modern generals look more like third world dictators than leaders of the "free world." Dig up a picture of General Eisenhower, conqueror of half the world, and see how many medals he wore on his chest. Just another symptom of the dysfunction that exists in our military.
  17. Hate to initiate bad rumors, but B-1s going away under sequestration? Can anyone in the know provide further details? Am I way off the mark here?
  18. Yes, properties are currently priced according to market. However, this is not the same as properties being priced according to a free-market. Clovis real estate is not a free-market. In the end, the free-market always wins. Keep that in mind when you decide to buy a house and temper your decision with how long you expect to be here. Also, the base is building a significant number of new dorms and houses, upon completion, I estimate that it will noticeably change the market. Yes, rentals are priced high however, that doesn't mean that they don't exist. There are actually a decent amount of rentals within the O-2 and up budget. You just need to spend some time looking, and it helps if you don't have pets. But yes, most clovis landlords are slumlords and I hope they burn in hell. As far as local watering holes...ha. You would be better off opening an old fashioned speak easy here than trying to apply for a liquor license. Unless your last name is curry... Yes, there are actually options here. Have you considered living in a trailer? My last year here I plan on living in my truck in the squadron parking lot.
  19. Not sure if you have read Bleeding Talent yet, but he addresses the common notion that military recruits are uneducated bottom 15 percenters, and categorically disproves it. And, while walking around an Army base will certainly make you second guess it, I think you have to compare that to walking around some of our nations finest educational institutions.
  20. He chooses to use our failures in Afghanistan as evidence of the declining efficacy of our military, which he links to the growing percentage of females. How then does he reconcile our performance in Vietnam? I don't like having women in the military, but neither they, nor gays, nor navs are the root cause of our modern woes, they are merely symptoms of much larger, systemic problems. And Canada certainly has this one figured out, their advon combat unit is a Tim Hortons on wheels, which they asked us to transport for them. Edit to add additional spear.
  21. A fellow subscriber to Wu Tang Financial Quarterly perhaps? I follow their investment advice to the letter. Gold, guns, and diversified bonds and shit. Just dropped 5k on a new grill as well.
  22. A little tongue in cheek there. Values are a characteristic of humanity, not politics per se. Politics is the game of imposing (by force if necessary) your "values" on others.
  23. I feel somewhat badly for insinuating this, but preemptive assault comes to mind here. What's the best debate/argument tactic? Deny, deny, counter-accuse. Maybe he's trying to get a head start. After Petraeus nothing would surprise me in this arena. Neither the current situation, nor the sexual assault statistics support these actions.
  24. Nsplayr, if you consider not having any values a type of value, then I'll more or less agree with you (but that would sound like fascism wouldn't it?) If not, disgruntledemployee has it right. Politics is about power and the ability to use it.
  25. This discussion of course assumes that the government still exempts the Roth withdrawals from taxes in 20 years (if they haven't completely pilfered the TSP that is). I wouldn't summarily discount the value of tax deductions today versus possible tax deductions in the future. Furthermore, tax bracket predictions are rather futile. That being said, they are not mutually exclusive and are both good options. Bottom line, you should properly diversify, and that doesn't mean just a nicely divided pie chart on the homepage of your account.
