This war and the number of casualties Russia is sustaining will change their society for years to come. As a frame of reference the United States suffered 160,000 casualties (58,000 deaths), over TEN years during the Vietnam War. Russian casualties from their invasion of Afghanistan were at 15,000 killed and 35,000 wounded, again over ten years. Afghanistan losses caused great debate in their society which ultimately caused them to quit and leave. It is important to keep in mind Russia's total population is about 1/3 of the United States and these losses will impact a far larger portion of the population...even as Putin tries to cover up those losses. More and more it looks like Putin has bet his future on the outcome which I hope we and others are using as we calculate and employ our strategy and response.
