  1. Also it may be the only jet flying that has turbofans buried in the wings! (At least in the US, I’m not sure if the British still fly the Nimrod)
  2. ADMIN NOTE: The drone posts from the NASA WB-57F and Iran threads were merged into this one. As they were transferred based on their time stamp, CH's original post for this thread is now on page 3 (sorry CH!). A link to this was added to those threads. ~ M2 The NASA WB-57F aircraft made the news after it was revealed that it took part in collecting data on Drone Swarms off the coast of Virginia in the vicinity of Joint Base Langley. The WB-57 has probably one of the longest service careers in the US Military, it was originally a licensed built bomber from Martin Aircraft and based on the English Electric Canberra and was one of the first US jet aircraft to drop bombs in combat. It found a new life as a Reconnaissance platform and continuously modified over the years in programs such as SECOND SLICE/RIVET SLICE, TROPIC MOON and RIVET RAP. The WB-57F bears little resemblance to the original design with TF33 Turbofans and new, outer enlarged wing sections. After being retired from the USAF, a handful of aircraft were donated to NASA for use in atmospheric research. As to the Drone Swarms, there is little to say about that story and will probably soon disappear from the news altogether! https://www.twz.com/air/mysterious-drones-swarmed-langley-afb-for-weeks
  3. Ha! In reality apparently there is an electric rocker switch on the top of the seat with a cover to move the seat in and out while your are standing. The switch was loose allowing the cover to activate the switch when the FA put their hand on the back of the seat. Drove the pilot right into the yoke and kicked off the AP with considerable nose down input to the yoke!
  4. An IL-76 was reportedly shot down and crashed. One engine appears on fire but this alone should have not caused a crash so maybe there was additional damage. https://warisboring.com/second-russian-military-transport-plane-comes-down-since-january/?fbclid=IwAR1qGCJ8p9y3aR3l4pv61kOg9aO2A0cqsxkR8654UesdBuUHlDnQsRoZiYw_aem_AaM4aJCKbEEF5pjC1t-0cIyK7ZH9AstX8CqYNQBosEK5FrsdJMUD-sCr3zPPpq06zMw#ltp4tr1qbv0ccfq0vuf
  5. My favorite 70’s movie as a child and that I recently re-discovered is “Colossus: The Forbin Project” A massive mainframe computer is built inside a mountain to take over decision making for launching nuclear weapons. It discovers a similar computer in the USSR and makes contact. They jointly take over the world. The movie has a “Andromeda Strain” tech-thriller quality to it.
  6. This is a good video of the upcoming changes coming to the AF. The two commentators are former military and their discussion regarding the reintroduction of “no-notice” inspections is interesting as well.
  7. Another spy balloon has been spotted! https://www.cbsnews.com/news/military-tracking-balloon-western-us-military/?fbclid=IwAR1KA0RNP3C7_d-9COHIa22wPTlCrqSVsOS5QSwVWh_06oSQ4eh0KgwaE4I_aem_AWr06Prmdh8nZSd_-MwrYzz5wsoN-4JE_2lkYUOPUMH_yGeoZs9n5r3n5OC32mVe3O8
  8. Mover & Gonk echoes everyone else’s skepticism on this program since there doesn’t appear to be any incentive at all that Big Blue is offering to lure you into this windowless van!
  9. And of course anti-ice valves never stick in the open position! Boeing has auto anti-ice systems that automatically turn on and off during icing conditions but to maintain the same type rating as legacy 737 aircraft, these type of systems are not installed on the Max. The Max with the LEAP engines should have had a new type certificate but Southwest would have not have purchased the aircraft to begin with and so Boeing did a lot of pounding a square peg in a round hole to emulate handling characteristics of legacy 737. Even the NG had a different wing and cruised faster than the 100 to 600 aircraft and it could be argued that Boeing should have changed the type certification back then.
  10. There is also an issue with the engine anti-ice. The LEAP engine nacelle lip uses more composite materials than the legacy nacelles and can catastrophically fail if the anti-ice is left on in dry conditions for more than five minutes! The AD warns this could result in “an un-powered off-field landing”! https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/08/10/2023-17197/airworthiness-directives-the-boeing-company-airplanes
  11. This is a good video of how those mid cabin doors are used and de-activated. I suspect that some of the bolts were either not installed or not properly torqued down and the door moved up when it hit some turbulence.
  12. Yeah, I could not get that video to load up for some reason.
  13. Timelapse video of the recovery of the P-8:
  14. And I think “Old” for a tanker or bomber is different than “Old” for a fighter. The AF has reluctantly come around to my way of thinking and will purchase some F-15EX. I always thought that Big Blue should have taken advantage of the continuing product and design improvements that Boeing and Lockheed have done on the F-15 and F-16 lines and sold overseas and have been replacing older airframes in their block groups.
  15. Well if the Belgians are trying to implement a one world government we don’t have to worry since they cannot corral their own multitude of political parties and different language regions! Belgian is like you unemployed brother in law sleeping on you couch, who tries to shoehorn himself to get invited to an event on your side of the family for the free food and drinks!
  16. People often asked me if there is anything to do at an overseas base if you could not get off-base. They were surprised that there were restaurants and clubs to go to, I guess they assumed that that it’s something like Full Metal Jacket. I joked that at Ramstein the Belgiums sole purpose in NATO was to run a night club! Apparently I’m not alone in my belief that they are the black sheep of NATO! https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2023/09/shared-threats-unequal-efforts-belgiums.html
  17. Subsequent photos show that the fuselage is cracked open so this aircraft will probably be written off. The P-8 has been one of the better DOD acquisitions and had a relatively smooth testing and fielding especially when you compare it to the KC-46!
  18. A P-8 Poseidon slid off the runway and into the water in Hawaii, possibly due to WX. No injuries reported and from the photos the damage looks minimal, but an inspection might reveal a hull loss if there is major damage to the MLG trunnions and engine pylons and wing spars.
  19. I think you would have better luck finding someone on Cults3D, Thingiverse, TurboSquid, etc and go on their message boards to hire someone out. Chances are someone has already created a file for the aircraft you want and it just has to be exported to the format you need.
  20. News Nation probably has been the leader in covering all the UAP stuff and they just broke the story that there were possibly UAP/balloons spotted over the arctic circle prior to the Chinese spy balloon incident!
  21. C.W. Lemoine breaks down the “Air Force Era of Transformation” on his podcast.
  22. This pilot is suggesting that there might be more trouble on the horizon for UPS!
  23. On a completely unrelated matter, the Navy found the poor scapegrunt not guilty of setting the Bonhomme Richard on fire. I don’t know what the rate of not guilty Court-martial convictions are in the Navy but I’m guessing they are pretty low so I’m guessing the case against him was pretty weak! https://www.2news.com/news/seaman-recruit-found-not-guilty-for-destroying-navy-ship/video_f95d432f-bf23-5bf3-944b-4d5975ed92ec.html
  24. I don’t doubt that circling approaches are a necessary training requirement, I just wonder if it’s necessary to do that type of training in a T-38. On another note, when I worked at ATA we used to regularly do a “circling” type of approach on the 727 in to Midway airport although technically it was a visual maneuver but the pilots who had training in circling approaches did much better than those who didn’t.
