  1. I'm not so sure; how many times have you heard the new slogan of "people first, mission always"?
  2. Free national park passes. Perfect timing, mine expires next month. We thought it was a steal at $80... https://store.usgs.gov/pass/military.html
  3. On a related topic that's probably not worthy of an additional thread... Is there a reason we use the term IP talking about an isolated person when the same term will be used on the fight freq for initial points? I have seen this cause confusion when Sandy told someone "to stay 10 miles east of the IP" and the aircraft subsequently went back to their hold point when they could have continued to fight. Any chance someone here is going to the next rewrite and could maybe come up with a different term?

Interesting. I guess I just overlooked the 10/22 as a gateway gun you give your 8 year old once the BB gun gets boring but they can't handle a full sized rifle yet. Never would have thought it could be very accurate, but that was a preconceived notion on my part. I'm basically looking for a rifle that I can take to the range and shoot for a few hours without spending huge amounts on ammo. Additionally, I'm trying to get my better half into shooting. We used to watch biathlon when we were stationed in Europe, so I thought if I could convince her that the rifle was like the ones they shot, she'd be more interested. Maybe I'll have to take another look at the 10/22. Thanks for the input.

I've looked at them, I was just curious if anyone had a target .22 that they really liked.

Anyone have a suggestion for a mid-range .22 cal bolt action target rifle? I'm looking for a step up from the standard cheap .22s; probably around the $500 range.
  7. Since we're bringing up old parts of the thread... I get what you are saying and agree to an extent, but it is still not legal. It is still the US government discriminating against people (theoretically) based on what they paid for their ticket. Most people would be pissed if they made a luxury car lane on the highway, but they paid more for it, so they should get special treatment, right? But for some reason everyone blindly accepts the first class line. If they could figure out a way to make an experienced traveler line, that would be far more legit. What we really need these days is an "I actually checked a bag and don't have a full sized suitcase I'm claiming is a carry on and I will actually remember to take my cell phone out of my pocket before walking trough the metal detector" line. But that's too much to fit on a sign, so I guess I'll be stuck behind the passenger who has to go through the metal detector 5 times because this whole airport security thing is brand new.
  8. "Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad, the committee chairman, said that given the country's fiscal crisis more savings must be found in the core defense budget, and that it would be impossible to address the nation's deficit without doing so." Bullshit. If you applied this logic to the average family, people would be selling their cars so they buy a new mansion. The nearly exponential increase in the big three entitlement programs are going to bankrupt our country, not defense spending. And your reference to the $850K per soldier per year is similarly illogical. Obviously war is expensive and when fly in Baskin Robins for 800 Chiefs who shouldn't be there in the first place, it doesn't get any cheaper. But they're not talking about cutting back on downrange spending, they're talking about taking away the entitlements of the military. Finally, if we're going to cut entitlements, we should start with those who have done little or nothing to earn them rather than those who have earned them with blood, sweat, and tears.
  9. So, if person A told this story to person B, person B tells person C, and person C tells the same story back to person A, is it now corroborated from a secondary source? On a separate but related note, I heard that AFSOC has recently outfitted the CV-22 with laser equipped ill tempered sea bass. Anyone care to corroborate this story?
  10. You have the right to not answer questions that could be self-incriminating, but I bet the state law allows for the cops to have detained him anyway if they thought he had been drinking. The supervisor likely realized he had not been drinking and was just looking for an altercation, so let him go. If he had slurred his words, I doubt they would have let him go like that.
  11. It looked to me like the AIB danced around some of the important factors. Yes, the pilot was killed because he 'failed to initiate a dive recovery.' But if you think of the investigation like a debrief, it is difficult to believe the dive recovery was the root cause. If he couldn't take a breath and was hypoxic, it is hard to recognize, confirm, and recover.
  12. That's great, but why just in uniform? Seems to me if the govt trusts me to fly over major US cities with live bombs and fly with live missiles to defend POTUS, I should be trustworthy in civies as well. On a side note, I always get upset about the First Class line at TSA checkpoints. Not to encourage or bring back a certain Constitutional freak, but how can the US government legally discriminate based on how much you paid for your ticket? It is perfectly natural and expected for the airlines to do it, but TSA is federal government. It amazes me that the ACLU or a similar org hasn't cried foul over that one yet.
  13. Just keeps getting worse. Not only did they fuck up big time, but they apparently fired the dudes who called them out. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/01/31/air-force-officials-retaliated-against-dover-whistleblowers-report-finds/?test=latestnews

I have a 26 gun fire safe that I actually bought with PCSing in mind so the movers couldn't steal my guns. It's heavy, but manageable by two people. I've moved it twice and movers have moved it once. The movers had no problem with it even though it was full of my guns. I emptied it before loading on and off the truck (to include the fire-proofing sheet rock-- I wouldn't do that again - not worth the 50lbs it saves), but still needed a friend to help. The only problem I have had is that with my current house, I couldn't get it down the stairs due to a tight turn, so its sitting in a corner of the garage instead of the basement. I would buy it; not only do you protect the guns you own from fire/crime, but think how bad you would feel if you found out some dirtbag stole one of your guns and used it to kill some family. The few hundred bucks and trouble moving it every three years is well worth it to me. Edit: Agreed with Nunya on buy bigger. It may say its a 26 or whatever gun safe, but you'll fill it up. And even if you don't load it to capacity, it's a lot easier to get to your 10th gun in a 26 gun safe than your 10th gun in your 12 gun safe.
  15. Anyone considered the 1% chance that the dude wrote an over the top bio on purpose? Ah, screw it, I'm going over to the boob, I mean Tebow thread.
  16. TMO's first answer is always no. If they say no it is less work for them. The TMOs I have dealt with do not usually read the JFTR even though that is their governing reg. They rely on their experience, so if they haven't seen it done, they think it is illegal. You will have to show them in the JFTR that you are authorized to ship from a storage location that is not your HOR. Look through chapter 5 part D, specifically U5310 A9 and U5310 J1a. I'm sure there are more references, but that second reference says specifically that an authorized origin is a place of storage.
  17. That actually seems like the proper response to abstract art to me.
  18. For fighters, probably not a replacement for a paper -1, but an easy replacement for FLIP. Not like you're going to reference FLIP with your NVGs anyway. It would be much better than fishing around in the tiny pubs case at night on a divert looking for the low approach book that some jackass lodged in sideways at the very bottom of the case.

Where do you guys buy parts for AK's? My trigger keeps not resetting after firing and I have to push the trigger forward in order to make it ready to shoot again. I'm sure a gunsmith could fix it, but replacing the trigger group sounds cheaper and easier.
  21. This program would pay for itself quickly, it is astounding that the AF hasn't already gone to something like this given our current budget problems.
  22. Maybe I'm a bit of an optimist on this one as I have done pretty well on assignments, but yes, I think they do give a crap. Do well at your job to get placed high on the VML and list your choices clearly along with your intent and AFPC will help you out if they can. Obviously if you are the only guy on your VML qualified for a specific job or you're toward the bottom of the rack and stack, you probably won't get your first choice. Remember that your functional at AFPC may actually be someone you already know from previous assignments. Hell, it could be you at AFPC for your next assignment and I hope you would care what your bros want.
  23. If people use that reasoning, then we shouldn't be able to give checkrides within our own squadrons because the O-3 SEFe might feel pressured by an O-4 ADO. We should have to have another squadron SEFE give checkrides for our squadron. But then, they're in the same wing, so maybe another wing should do it. But they might be in the same numbered AF and feel pressured because of that. Maybe we should just have only SEFEs from another service give the AF checkrides, that'd fix any ability to cheat. Or we could trust our people to have integrity and squash those caught cheating.
  24. Is the Hawk a zero-zero seat?
  25. I would start with the AVIS in the US. They probably have a better system for communicating and dealing with the Italians. Tell them you are going to file a Better Business Bureau complaint. This will also avoid fighting the Italians on their turf as they are pros at bureaucracy shenanigans. You can also try challenging the charge with your credit card company. Send them the info and they can cancel the charge while they investigate it.
