  2. And we are "reverse" engineering those engines, because we've lost some of the knowledge that went into building them: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/23/nasa-engine-test-parts-saturn-v-rocket-moon_n_2534361.html

  4. Whos? Theirs? and all this time, I thought they were aircraft. This thread's going nowhere... 1 chance to save it... Ring Girls: \\
  5. If you want to fly Pave Hawks then you will already be in "rotorcraft" when the decision is made as to what airframe you will fly, so you wouldn't transfer to "rotorcraft" if you weren't selected for a Pave Hawk. Regardless, switching between the 2 is statistically possible but highly unlikely unless you went to V-22s. First choose to be an military officer, then consider being a pilot, and then when/if that choice arises choose between those 2 paths. If only there was a forum titled "What Are My Chances?" If only they would make it easier for you to find it under the "Road to Wings" section. If only there was search function to help me find the answers to my questions. Are you still using dial-up or did you trade in your $1000 boots for a couple months of DSL? I suggest you take some time and think about your next posts very carefully.
  6. I'm not too sure... my first boss at my first squadron talked about the times when they would leave on trips and toss their house keys in a hat for anyone to take advantage of. Would have been late 80s most likely based on his rank/years. That same year I showed up the IG was busted for shagging with another pilot's wife in our squadron...
  7. Obviously not an annomally however you care to look at the statistics... I still do not understand why it takes involving the Media before actual research is done? That level of service should be provided to every service member at any time, and if it cannot be provided or the situation "proven" then the default position should always be in favor of the member. I understand that the Govt has to protect the $ of the people, but a volunteer military member should never have to prove his or her case to receive what they are due. The burden of proof should always be on the service, and that is almost never true. I know everyone has a story, but I got docked $700 about 5-6 years ago, I asked why and no one could tell me over 5 visits/calls to finance... and thankfully someone saw that I was paid that $ back on the last visit, but a year or so later the same amount was docked and the process repeated. This time they showed me a "receipt" with my name and address on it and the amount paid (there was absolutely nothing else on it!) There was no reason, date, or any colloborating evidence why, how, or when I was originally paid and more importantly why I shouldn't have been paid... it honestly looked like someone put together an excel spreadsheet real quick in the back to try and get rid of me. So I am out $700 for some reason I will never know and have absolutely no recourse, except it seems for me to go to the media (*gasp) so someone will actually determine what happened. And after $1 Billion, we are no closer to solving any of these problems.
  8. Forgive the ignorance, but I'm assuming that "visor" = the pivoting knight's mask on the nose?
  9. It really doesn't matter if the board considers it, the PRF process will and the raters will continue to. As long as the culture continues to worship AAD and IDE like they are some magically-delicious vision of 10 years into the future the problem will persist.
  10. A week after a "disagreement" with a Sq/CC I was surprisingly booted to a less than "lateral" wing position (I respectfully told him that what he wanted to do wouldn't work)... two months later I was proven correct (the Sq tried at the expense of many many late nights/weekends by everyone, but they eventually returned to original operations). I served my penance for 2 years and never looked back/ had no regrets. It probably lasted a month longer in an attempt to save face for the CC. Didn't end my career, but it was obvious I was no longer seen fit to be a high performer... Ever seen Pentagon Wars? The career result to the officer in that Movie is often what happens to Jr Officers that speak their mind in the AF and is exactly why we have $34 million buildings in Afghanistan that we are going to demolish without ever using (because Jr Officers are dismissed or won't bother to speak up)... Many leaders will simply not admit that what we are doing is wrong.
  11. Another story: https://preview.reuters.com/2013/7/2/paymasters-hound-a-master-sergeant This is really starting to make me angry... you wouldn't like it when I become angry.
  12. Not sure if this needs a new thread, but interesting article about military finance: https://preview.reute...by-the-pentagon This is the first in a series to examine the antiquated, error-prone, non-auditable system used to pay our nations warriors... I am willing to bet that every single person in the military either has a story like the one in this article, or has known someone that does. It is absolutely ridiculous that it has been allowed to continue unabated for so long. I doubt anything will be fixed in my career, but one can only hope. One highlight: So, basically what I understand is if you are not getting the results you expect from the finance folks, the only way to fix it is to call a local/national news source to investigate and then the DFAS auditors will actually LOOK at your case... it is not good enough to fix something for our warriors unless it is saving face publicly.
  13. Not for sale just yet, but for $130: How long until this COTS system, or something like it, makes it into Aviation... obviously a lot more certification work is required for it to be legal for instrument work, etc... and even more for it to be military hardened, but I can't imagine that it is insurmountable (or even cost ineffective to do so). If only for a great SA tool: A/S, Altitude and heading. https://buy.garmin.c...prod134348.html
  14. By all means, we should wait to enact better draft laws until such time as they are needed. Because War these days takes months to get going and we will have plenty of time for politics while we move our horses to the front line. Preparing for the next war based on the attributes of the last and current war has worked out so well for us in the past.
