  1. "One of our competitors, Orbital Sciences, has a contract to resupply the International Space Station, and their rocket honestly sounds like the punch line to a joke. It uses Russian rocket engines that were made in the 60s. I dont mean their design is from the 60sI mean they start with engines that were literally made in the 60s and, like, packed away in Siberia somewhere." -Musk in 2012 wired interview
  2. the military tends to accelerate divorces, it probably deserves some of the blame... but from my experiences with divorcees in the military it simply uncovered what would have driven them apart eventually.
  3. ...not sure if serious?

  6. https://ahrlac.com/index.php/press-releases/96-revolutionaty-aircraft-showcasing-africa-s-advanced-aerospace-capability-takes-to-the-skies Looks like a fun one to fly... might have a bit of forward wing sweep on it? Rudders just look a little small, but maybe they are far enough away from the CG. Read somewhere of a projected cost of about $10mil. From another article: The Ahrlac can fly at a maximum cruise speed of 500km/h and remain airborne for up to 10 hours with a range of about 2000km. The aircraft will primarily be used for surveillance, anti-poaching operations, counter-insurgency, armed maritime and border patrols and emergency supply missions. The aircraft has 6 “hard points” designed for weapons to be rapidly “clipped” on and off, allowing it to carry light rocket pods, missiles, bombs and external fuel tanks.
  7. There must be a plot, guess I'll have to watch the whole thing now...
  8. Sky Fighters clips:
  9. I know 2 ACs with Q3s for not calling it for crew duty day... I also know of some SOF folks that were stranded because a crew decided there day was over and couldn't wait any longer. And a crew that had to explain to the 4 star (flown to meet him in person) why they decided to not fly the last leg with a DV on it for crew rest. The best we can hope to do is break even...
  10. That was before camera phones and twitter-book-gram... Kids these days gotta show everyone, everything. Plausible denial-ability left a long time ago.
  11. So, you have to give up retirement pay for the days you work for the reserves? I know there are some GS flying jobs in AFMC & NASA, do any of the other commands/services have GS flying billets so that you can make retirement + pay? Sounds like a good rule change to me, someone retires or leaves AD we hire them back as a GS to be the line IP... We keep the experience, and don't have to invest money in training someone else.
  12. Not sure if it is totally careerist mindset for all folks. IMO (and yes I am speaking in broad/general terms), the AF does a poor job of giving aviators decent jobs with responsibility/culpability for when folks under then screw-up... until they reach DO/CC. Think of all the jobs in a flying Sqd, many are not held responsible when someone under them screws the pooch. Even when farmed out to the Gp or Wg, it is hard to pin an aircrew screw-up on an FSO, Exec, Patch, Evaluator, etc... Perhaps flight leads, ACs in large crews get some experience in "trust" but they still have some control over the situation. When responsible for the actions of people 1000s of miles away, I think the pucker factor rises and the laziest leadership-traits tend to emerge (CYA-style.)

  14. Supersonic business jet(s), 8 years out? Aerion: check out their home page intro video: https://www.aerionsupersonic.com/full-video.aspx Spike: https://www.spikeaerospace.com/ HyperMach: https://hypermach.com/ Interesting wing design on the first two; how about getting that type rating...
  15. Might get another chance next year, the panel agreed to next years' reduction (which charlie17chick reported they were seeking) https://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/04/30/panel-approves-troop-reductions-not-benefit-cuts.html?comp=700001075741&rank=7
  16. https://www.janes.com/article/37118/maiden-flight-for-mc-27j-gunship ...... The first fully configured Alenia Aermacchi MC-27J Spartan gunship has made its maiden flight from the company's Turin Test Flight Centre, it was announced on 25 April. The aircraft was flown with a chin-mounted L-3 Wescam MX-15HD electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) sensor turret, and with Link-16 datalink software and hardware provisions to prepare the aircraft for installation of the ATK palletised mission system. Provisions for an upgraded Selex ES communication system have also been built into the aircraft. According to Alenia, installation of both the ATK developed modular/palletised roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) mission and weapon system and a modified side door for the GAU-23 30 mm cannon installation will be completed in May. This will be followed in June by the completion of the current round of flight trials, which has included firing the cannon. Aside from the gun, Alenia is also looking to integrate precision-guided munitions such as the MBDA US Viper Strike and Raytheon Griffon, as well as other systems being developed by ATK. These will be carried on underwing hardpoints or internally located launch tubes. Launched at the Farnborough Airshow in 2012, the MC-27J is a special mission variant of the C-27J tactical transport aircraft that will enable operators to quickly change the aircraft's set-up from gunship and command and control to basic transport for multiple missions. .....

  20. https://www.space-travel.com/reports/Astronauts_train_at_Maxwell_999.html So apparently we are spreading this to other organizations: It took them longer than a year to redesign!! Copy, this course is designed for idiots. "outside of your comfort zone"... WOW, I've got to sit down, crack a beer and have a serious debrief after this one.
  21. Who can blame them when they fill up NOTAMs with pages of: temporary 3 foot towers, wet runways, and stupid abbreviations that save little print space but are unpossible to figure out.
  22. No words on the pilot yet...? Hopefully the Navy didn't buy cheap beacons like the AF. Here's hoping for the best.
  23. Logically you would not be able to complete correspondence to be competitive for residence if you are barred from doing both... You would either complete correspondence early and eliminate yourself from the potential of residence or you wait until midnight after your last look to register and try to complete it before all of your non-selected peers. Things will not improve by changing the rules, they will improve when it is no longer a game.
