  1. Playing Dress-Up Why do I even bother looking at af.mil anymore?
  2. I'm TDY at Little Rock right now. Yes, if you are on base OR you refused gov't quarters, you get the proportional rate of $31/day for meals. If you are off-base with a non-A slip, you get $54/day. If you want to be off-base at Little Rock, the trick is to just say so the clerk at the lodging front desk that you are "TDY". If you tell them off the bat that you are a student, expect to stay on base. I'm not saying to lie, I'm just saying to not offer up any extraneous information if you aren't queried.
  3. Found this gem on Wiki Answers: "Q: Looking for answers to self aid buddy care course? A: The answers are in the course material. If you study the course and take notes during the CBT, you'll be able to pass the end-of-course exam with no problems. Have some integrity, and do what's right, instead of trying to get others on the internet to give you the test answers." Source So, the question is: who's the tool?
  4. I'm sure there was nothing that needed killing during the duration of that ceremony. Good job, Bagram.
  5. Chuck Norris was once told to "IDENT"... The reply was a fist through the radar scope.
  6. Are you in the USAF? Is this an official event? If so, might as well make it non-alcoholic... Probably something like Kool Aid and be done with it.
  7. As long as it isn't that Molson crap.
  8. CF-18? I wonder how many pallets that thing can hold.
  9. Of course I love my country, but that doesn't mean that I am not disturbed by the fact that Americans took land from natives in the name of "manifest destiny" and segregated according to race and gender. I'm also Catholic. That doesn't mean that I agree with some of the policies of the Church, whether it was centuries ago, or today. Burying the hatchet doesn't preclude knowing your history.
  10. Thanks for all of the information so far - definitely helpful. Any other Dyess-dwellers care to chime in? Also, any RUMINT about the J-model conversion down there would be appreciated. Thanks again!
  11. Same thing going on at Little Rock. Here's the thing: The JFTR can say whatever it says, but the Wing at which you are TDY can issue "more restrictive" guidelines. So, as in the case at Little Rock, it is mandated that if you are here TDY as a "student", then you must stay on base, even if that means moving you around between buildings on base if your graduation dates move back, or moving you off base if there is absolutely no room, and then moving back on once there is. It's crazy. There is no way to really barracks-lawyer your way around it - trust me, I've tried. The only thing that really works is appealing to whoever the clerk is at the front desk of the Air Force lodge, explain to him/her the situation, and they may/may not give you a non-A slip for the duration of the TDY.
  12. Fine by me. The more people presenting themselves as easy targets by walking around with "fake front tucks" (reference to base-wide e-mail sent by AEW/CV at OKAS in 2007), the less shoes there are chasing me around yapping about the length of my socks, the location of my sunglasses, or the thoroughness of which I washed my hands before a meal.
  13. Standard disclaimer: Exhaustively utilized search function and (surprisingly) didn't find a whole lot of info. I'm a Herk guy at Yokota right now, and I'll be coming back stateside in 2011. I heard that Dyess (specifically 40AS) is supposed to be converting to C-130Js in 2011. Personally, I'd much rather go to the 41AS at Little Rock, just because I know/like the area, as does the wife (no kids yet), but I want to move into Js more. I'm just trying to prepare myself (and her) with info for either place. So, that being said, what info can you guys give about the Abilene area? I'm specifically wondering about housing, and where "most" people live around the community. Like I said, I'm married, and we'll probably start working on having a youngin' once we get settled in wherever we wind up back in CONUS. While comments such as "Dyess sucks" or "Great place to raise a family" are welcome, they don't do me a whole lot of good, since that's the standard response 99.9% of the time. Looking for specifics. Thanks a lot!
  14. Or at some flea-bag motel in Po Dunk, Wherever.
  15. With a good crew and some beverages, any TDY can be awesome, despite the location.
  16. Pretty sure the whole point of waiting is so that you receive it once you are combat mission ready (CMR). In other words, you are full-up and ready to deploy in whatever MWS you're assigned. When you're CMR at your unit, you should know it. I wouldn't wear it until then.
  17. I think I'm going to get out when my commitment's up.
  18. If I see Army Brig. Gen Lori Sutton one more time, I'm going to scream (and I have been TDY to the States for almost two months now, AFN free).
  19. So here's a question: Is an E/H guy that goes to the J considered a "crossflow", with the same associated career stink that comes with it as say, an E/H guy crossflowing to the tanker world? If so, that really shows the mindset that higher-ups have about the E/H vs the J. Whether that's the CORRECT mindset or not is another issue altogether.
  20. YC-17, maybe???
  21. I think I did it earlier in this thread, but I'll send out another plug for Troy again. 9 week terms. In that term, you'll write about 3 papers or so, plus a final. You have to take at least one proctored "exam" per term, usually the final, and it's usually in the form of essay questions (no surprises - they generally come from discussion topics from the term). Instructors I've had so far have all been PhDs, and they are all very willing to teach, interact, and most importantly, work around your hectic schedule. I spend probably a collective 3 hours a week or so doing stuff for class, between the reading, posting the usually-weekly response on the discussion board, and working on papers. I don't think that's too bad of a workload. The downside is that I have to fork out about 300 bones per class, after TA, with them. It's honestly that big a deal. I put aside $75 per payday, and that takes care of tuition and books. On the other hand, it's an MS degree from a known school that you can actually walk into (ie, not just a PO box somewhere). No disrespect to TUI/AMU/whatever, but I wanted it to be user-friendly, check-the-box, and applicable OUTSIDE of my PRF. I think Troy fit the bill in all of those categories. The other programs I looked at and participated in (AMU) did not. If you are just looking to check a box, though (not what I would recommend), AMU and TUI seem to be working for a lot of people. That's what she said!
  22. Finally, a good discussion around here!
  23. Well you got that part right... You've got to talk to these people as if they were your wife/girlfriend/significant other/whatever. Isn't that what Shirts primarily do? I swear after a TDY I have to sit in front of Outlook for the better part of an hour deleting all of the pointless emails that the Shirt sent out (usually forwarded) regarding things that I'm pretty sure no one cares about.
