  3. You can get a civilian permit via the DoD and FAA. You have to do a crap ton of paperwork but you can find all the info at the faa website. There is a list of approved pilots and companies with military permits. Like Phoenix, Lockheed, etc.

  6. Thats a great headset, I once knew of someone that sent his mil headset to DC and they converted it to GA for him. I believe it was free or maybe twenty dollars. It wasn't much.

  8. Oh, sorry. I'm talking about acronyms that are used when flying IFR to set up approaches and stuff. P- positional awareness (30 mile NNE) A- ATIS (get the info) I- Instruments (DG to mag compass, altimeter) N- Navs (tune in nav frequencies and set OBS,HSI RMI, etc.) C- Comms (tune in all your frequencies for com) A- Approach brief (MICEATM) L- Landing checklist L- Landing light or land the plane Approach Brief M- magnetic Compass/H.I.   9. What acronyms, if any, do military pilots use for IFR. Do you guys use PAINCALL or MICE ATM? I've heard that PAINCALL was from the military.

  13. Ive seen a few trike RVs. Ive also seen some tailwheel Grumman conversions. They look like a six.
  14. You might want to look into an old Grumman Yankee, Tiger, Cheetah or something like that. Almost all are IFR equipped. They are very efficient and very comfortable for XC. I was going to buy a Yankee and I test flew it. The thing has better response than a Decathlon and only uses about 6 gallons an hour. Throw in a handheld and you are set. Good luck! If you have any specific questions, just send a PM. I've hung out at the airport long enough to have seen/flown/heard of almost every civilian plane on the market. LOL!
  15. I flew 2.3 solid IMC at night right before I got my ticket. I scared the shit out of myself because I forgot to turn the strobes off before hitting the clouds. You are right about spatially disoriented. I definately reccomend trying it out just for fun. Do some Dutch roles and then look into the clouds. Talk about serious leans.
  16. I think that those of us who learned instruments in a 1972 C-172 are already accustomed to old out of date instruments. LOL. Gotta love those NDB approaches!
  17. The ATP test sucks. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter where you got your hours for ATP. It takes a lot more than an equivalency sheet. How many microphones must be on a plane carrying 99 or more passengers? What are these powered by and where are they located? What is significant about the power and their location? Typical ATP question. Start studying, good luck.
  18. FYI: I think there is some confusion in this thread. A low approach is far different, excuse the pun, from a short approach. A short approach is done in a VFR traffic pattern. If there is someone on final and ATC wants you to scoot in front of them, they will say make short approach cleared to land. If you are a student and the instructor wants to pull your engine, they will either ask for a short approach, and hint you of their plans, or just ask for the option so that you don't know their intentions.

  20. The option is great for training because the instructor can throw things at you last minute. Short approach is also approved in the option in the civilian world. Not sure about military.

  22. I am absolutely trying to convert you guys. ENJJPT picked up on the subtle messages, but heres one thats not so subtle. TODAY is the last day of truckfest. If you are looking or even considering a new vehicle, you can get an awesome truck for very cheap. And I use cheap loosely. :D
  23. Yeah, there are a ton of videos out there aof people thinking that H2 can do something good off road. They were made to be huge and comfortable, not replace the H1. I think they are cool, but I like being able to off road safely in my truck.
  24. I respectfully disagree with you jtpuro. While I agree that laughing at resemblence to genitalia is somewhat overdone and kinda stupid, I find nothing wrong with the names people use to describe things that might resemble something. I love that the military is full of slang names and things that only those in the military understand. It kind of separates those in the service from civilians. I look forward to learning all of these terms while I'm in the Air Force.
