  1. Spoo, do you know which third of the runway he was cleared to land on? Looking at the airport diagram, it looks like runway 9/27 is only about 2,000 feet north of R-18. Sounds like he wouldn't have much time to stabilize on final if he was landing on the first part of the runway. Did it look like he overshot the centerline at all?
  2. That rule must have changed b/c it is not required now. You just have to have your ID card on you at all times, much like a normal base. Funny how many ppl wear those goofy necklaces and armbands though.
  3. I was in a simliar situation when I started my PPL. I was just about to start my senior year of h.s. and didn't have much money so I could only afford 1 flight lesson a week. Usually flew Sunday afternoons after church, which worked out great because I worked at Chick-fil-a and always had the day off. Between work, football season, and taking some time off from breaking my left hand in the season opener, I finished 50 wks later with 41.5hrs of flying time. With that said, the more continuity you can get the better. Just fly as often as possible and stay motivated and eager and you will do well. Good luck!
  4. If you are worried about the cost, look at getting a Sport Pilot's License. Only 20hrs are required and you can still fly lots of cool airplanes under 1320 max takeoff weight. Lots of taildraggers meet the LSA (light sport aircraft) requirements including the mighty J-3 Cub! And Techsan is right, you will still have your PILOTS LISCENSE (whatever that is)! Check out this tool from AOPA to compare requirements and costs between PPL, Sport pilot license, and recreational pilot certificate https://www.aopa.org/letsgoflying/cert_comparison.html?keepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=530&width=675
  5. Nice find. I was going to recommend the F4i like I used to own since it is fuel injected but he should be really happy with the RR. Congrats on the bikes, should make for some good father/son rides.
  6. Rainman, I'm not debating the opportunities out there right now in real estate. It's a great time to buy in parts of the country, just not for me. I'm just pointing out that other investments offer more liquidity. I can make a few clicks and my stock or mutual is sold, whereas a home may take 6-9 months to sell. It's really a matter of preference and ones situation. FWIW, I've always like Warren Buffett's quote "be greedy when others are fearful, and fearful when others are greedy".
  7. Rode Deals Gap (The Dragon's Tail) in NC/TN a couple weeks ago with my dad and brother on rented Harleys and my dad's Vulcan 900. 318 turns in 11 miles. Sure wish I had my R6 out there instead though!
  8. It's all about liquid. There are always buyers for stocks. But, take a look around and see all the homes for sale and tell me what paying two mortgages does to your ROI. In this unstable market, I would much rather have cash. That way when a good deal comes along you are in the position to capitalize. Most of the profit is made on the buy, not the sell.
  9. Did you have to get special permission from the Wing/CC at Tyndall to do that? Very nice Glassair!
  10. Building sounds like it would be fun after retirement when free time is more available but that's not in the cards right now. There are a decent amount of 3's and 4's on barnstormers and I've got a friend who's cousin is selling his RV-4 in Illinois that I need to check on. Sometimes the chase is the best part!
  11. Do you really expect anyone to click on a link that says giant cock? Cock was a bad choice.
  12. Ya, I'm sure it sucks at Cannon and I feel for you guys and especially your families who are stuck there year-round. With that said, I'd love the chance to see for myself. The 318th and NSAv sounds like fun. Charleston rocks btw-but upstate SC is better. Nicer lakes, closer to the twisties, and superior schools!
  13. How many times have you had your medical checked by an FAA bubba? Not saying it doesn't happen but I've got at least 40yrs of flying left in me and I'd rather use the $4k for burning Avgas. To each his own
  14. Why is him flying again a bigger issue? Is landing gear up a trend item for him? What did the FEB conclude?
  15. Copy, need more priority club points. Now what's this SA that you guys are talking about?
  16. I'll check with the secretary but hopefully I scan it and resize it and have it printed out in card size. What are the stipulations on: Military checkride counts for BFR?
  17. Pm is on its way! You obviously know your stuff.
  18. Anyone have experience with single seat Pitts Special, the experimental type? I was surprised at the low cost (mid 20's) for these airplanes and they seem very capable. I'm looking at a couple with the I/O 320 (160hp). Basically looking for something fun to fly after work (when not deployed) and IFR and XC are not too much of a consideration. Barnstormers has several for sale.
  19. This reminds me, I need to make a copy of my FC1 (1042) and keep it with me when I fly civilian. The new guidance doesn't say exactly how to comply with the new rule that went into affect in October 09 (military physical counts for Flying class 3) but I figure this is the safest route if I get ramp checked by the nazi FSDO.
  20. Ever heard of Launch and Recovery? Not a pred guy but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
  21. Agreed. The two ears, one mouth rule applies there. Also helps to pause before switching freqs, when switching centers etc, in case the freq is incorrect. Technique only.
  22. Oh snap!
  23. Awesome patches on both sides!
  24. I was stationed at HRT and my old roomate, a gunship pilot, got sent to Cannon to fly preds. He hates it there but is making the best of it. Cannon was a horrible choice, plain and simple, and I hate to see families uprooted from the panhandle and moved over there. If I were stationed there, I would probably buy a V tail bonanza and keep a beater car at CVN and commute to work from Albuquerque. At least you would live in a real city and your family would be better taken care of when you're deployed. If that doesn't work, there's always Portales which is more tolerable than Clovis. Hopefully the AF realizes how many great people they are losing and gets rid of the base before it's too late. Until then, best of luck to those of you and your families that are living in Clovistan. FWIW, I've been to Clovis and would PCS to Cannon in a second, the people and culture of AFSOC make it worth while.
  25. I sympathize with military spouses and know it must be incredibly difficult. The majority of wives I know are amazing women and have the ability to juggle full time jobs and school while still being there for their family. With that said, there are always the few (spouses and military) that feel the need to complain about every little thing, wherever they are. Just make the best of whatever your situation is. Good point though, the wives are forced to endure the majority of the suck while the husbands get to play, hats off to all of the spouses out there
