Brabus, are you really going to lead with this as your problem statement? You come across as arrogant here and blaming two dead gentlemen for legally flying their aircraft, potentially while squawking 1200 and switching freqs at low altitude to start flight following (aviate navigate communicate right?). It sounds like if you were King, J-3 Cubs would be grounded for lack of transponder and radio IVO "busy airspace". BTW, have you ever flown in SC? It's Moncks Corner, SC dude...we aren't talking about a feeder airport underneath DFW Class B here! YGBSM

FYSA, for you those of us that fly GA and use ADSB: TIS will disappear from your screen starting in 2016 from any ADSB units that do not have a 2020 compliant transponder and GPS (garmin 430 or the new $500 Dynon drop replacement for ex). The FAA has announced this to try and increase compliance ahead of the mandate. The next Dynon update will continue to allow TIS to continue to 2020 without certified GPS, but I'm not sure on navworx or other ADSB units out there. This debate is interesting but in it's context (F-16 mid-air) we can't miss the forest for the trees. Maybe others have the inside scoop and just my early opinion, but I think ATC error, Pilot error, and Task management will be causal factors. ADS-B traffic would've only improved one of these, ATC error. That's only loosely since it would've only allowed the Viper driver to do ATC's job (traffic separation). Maybe he turns 180 heading faster than 18 seconds with TIS on the screen in this accident? Could it be another distractor to bring the pilot's eyes inside? I was heads down last week entering class C and inputting my squawk for flight following, almost fat dumb and happy, and saw a glider (no radio or transponder) frozen in my lower canopy, co altitude less than 1/4 mile away. Keep your eyes peeled guys!

I could still see traffic on my Dynon ADSB module with my transponder in standby last week. Traffic Information Service (TIS-B) is a great capability.

I doubt it. I talked to the controllers and they said they rarely violate anybody. As an example, they said an aircraft would have to disregard Tower's instructions to Go-Around and create an unsafe situation. Also, of note, OSH tower operates under 72 FAA waivers to make the arrivals and departures happen. There's a 29 page document that pilots must review prior to operating into and out of KOSH. I'm not positive, but I think the dots (Orange, Green, White for R-27) are less than 3,000 feet.

Haha! Sounds like fun for you!

It wasn't necessary, but did make things exciting, especially since I already went around once thanks to ATC buffoonery. I think the dude was just so engrossed in following the procedures and lost SA.

I believe that. Happened to me and a few other friends here too, but without the stall part. Here's a video of my landing Sat. https://youtu.be/BaO0ZaftAG0

I'm sorry but ATC better have a damn good reason for having him this low at 20NM out, especially given that MSA is 3100ft. 1600 MSL is glideslope intercept altitude for R-15. That happens at 5.8 DME. Anyway, enough said. It will all come out in a few months. Just sucks 2 lives were lost and one ruined.
-
Your weak attempt at sarcasm is noted. Field Elev is -46 MSL at CHS. 10 miles x 3 = 3000 AGL. Easy. Done. No LGPOS math required.
-
Lots of factors here, just like in any crash and they will be investigated. The results will be released at the appropriate time and I look forward to it. I'm just shocked and outraged at the mistakes some or all Involved (ATC especially) would've had to make for this tragedy to happen.
-
First I'm seeing or 2-3k feet. We all know eye witness accounts are errant but I first heard 300ft from the guys at the airport who talked to locals. 2000-3000 AGL while pretty low for that far out (glide slope intercept at 10 miles at 3000 ft) is at least plausible based off controller discretion or weather that day.
-
I'm from this area, I thought I was clear. JETS (Airliners Vipers and F-18's included) get vectored over my friends house in Goose Creek near Weapons Station on radar base when landing R-15 or 21. Goose Creek, not Moncks Corner, SC. There's no logical reason for any plane to be so low, so far away from landing. This situation is really weird.

Gamecock B is 10k to 17.9K. Instrument approach vectors? 15-20nm radar downwind going into CHS??? AFSOC authorizes IFR practice on VFR flight plan FYSA.

Historically, has there ever been a civilian vs military mid air collision in a MOA? If so how likely is this to happen? The nearest MOA (Gamecock) is almost 20 NM from the crash site. We know the C-150 departed KMKS and was headed to Myrtle Beach. Worst case, assuming a direct flight path, it would've been 30 miles was even in a position to enter the MOA via the southern border. That airspace is active 10k-17.9k. Those altitudes don't make much sense for a short hop to MYR or CRE and aren't very 100hp C-150 friendly on a hot summer day in SC either. It seems unlikely to be a factor in this crash. I'm not sure how this spawned into an airspace debate, but if people want to talk about airspace, it seems like a great time for both sides to learn from each other.

IR-18 looks to be the closest. Eye witness reports say the planes were at 300 ft but we all know how reliable witness accounts are. The SIB will look at all this and I'm sure we will all learn something and it won't be repeated. In the mean time, thanks for the info, I'll pass it to GA pilot friends in the area. I learned to fly at KMKS and never saw F-16's or C-17's this close to the airport so this is just a huge surprise to all of us. Prayers for the families involved.

I'm happy the F16 pilot got out alive, but deeply saddened by the likely outcome of the general aviation pilots involved. Crash occurred about 5nm SE of KMKS. Bad week for Shaw AFB in the news. 3 ship low pass over Greenville Downtown last week had a lot of locals very angry. https://www.foxcarolina.com/story/29433013/fighter-jets-spotted-over-greenville Question for the Shaw or Charleston pilots. Are there any low level routes near Moncks Corner, SC where the F-16 usually operate? The midair occurred well outside of the Gamecock MOA. I've got a friend who flies his Bonanza and J-3 Cub out of KMKS and he's asking if he should be aggressively scanning for military at low altitude outside of the MOA now because he's never done so in 40 years of flying.

Or better yet, honest feedback is given person-person and the OPR doesn't have special code that only CC's or execs can decipher. Ideally, it would be easily interpreted by anyone that reads it.

Good luck. You won't be the first BO.net member to run and hopefully you'll be the second to win a seat! You should reach out to Adam Kinzinger. https://kinzinger.house.gov/contact/

Maybe instead the board could ignore Majors with wing exec on their record and follow CJCS direction and look after guys making such a huge sacrifice for this program. Anyone else notice a trend of the AF marching to the beat of its own drum without regard for the rest of DoD. I think something bad happened to Buzz Moseley last time he did this by ignoring the demand for ISR...oh ya he was fired.

Planning on taking leave and flying the RV-4 up, but it's hard to turn down an all expense paid trip to OSH, even if the flying isn't as fun! What are you flying up Huggy?

Investment showdown -- beyond the Roth, SDP, & TSP
Whitman replied to Swizzle's topic in Squadron Bar
I'm deployed for 3-4 months and planning on throwing as much into Roth TSP as possible (new my pay code stops you at 60% base pay and 65% flight pay). I understand I'm limited to 18K for the Roth IRA. My question is, after I return home, can I still continue towards the 53K limit for combat zone pay or can money only be invested towards that higher limit while the member is deployed? My guess is the latter, but I'm trying to figure out a way to max out TSP for the year and go above the 18K overall limit. My pay is not making it easy for us to invest.- 1,190 replies

That seems pretty fast. Guess they had to clear out the 05 YG before the 06 YG Major's board starts 21 Sept this year.

Hacker, just a counter argument but maybe the author wrote the article so others in similar situations could learn from his story? Often times doing the right thing and sticking to your conviction carries a huge price, especially in this AF. Wouldn't writing this with that in mind empower those who have been shut down for similar reasons? I'm not a CAS dude and don't have a dog in the fight but the AF needs to find a way to encourage more disruptive thinking.

I was gone way more in AMC than I am now in AFSOC. I had 4 weeks between my 1st and 2nd deployment in AMC. In AFSOC deploying inside 1:1 dwell is not allowed without waiver and my squadron is moving towards 1:2 with hardly any flying TDYs while CONUS. Just make sure your wife isn't disillusioned by all those nice C-17 assignments to McChord or Charleston. You will perpetually live out of a suitcase.

Nitecore MH25 is pretty sweet. 960 lumens and rechargeable through USB and also has accepts two CR123A batteries if USB isn't an option. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A0N04BM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
