We just won the national drill competition at Indiana University this past weekend. It is our 3rd straight national championship at Clemson University. I pledged 2 years ago so i don't remember ever little specific but basically you have pledge practice at your discretion (2-3 times a week for us) and then there is a a hell night which kicks off the bullet phase of hell week. Also there are two boards, one halfway through and then a final review board. Our "rats" as they are called are almost complete and will have hell night very shortly. Let me know if you have any more ?'s Brian. [ 11. April 2005, 19:47: Message edited by: wnanna ]

Great advice from the old heads out there. -
Blood issues (tests, waivers, platelet count, Factor V Leiden)
Whitman replied to a topic in Aviation Medicine
Flight Doc, A friend of mine at my ROTC detachment was told by the commander that she can't fly b/c of the blood clot in her arm/upper chest. She got the blood clot after getting her wisdom teeth taken out...the nurse didn't clear the needle b/f giving her the IV. Is this DQ? She's on cumadin (blood thinner) right now. The blood clot has deteriorated for the most part but not completely gone yet. What are your thoughts? -
I CAN verify that it is not 1 or 5. When I was practicing the test at the clinic I asked the tech if any of them were 1 or 5 and she said no. I told her what I heard about the theory behind it and she thougtht it was interesting. What is the Navy version C-17?

Thanks man, I'm not suicidal or anything just looking at all the risky activities I do right now (motorcycle, flying, etc.) and considering giving it up. I know that's probably overboard so I'm just trying to calm down and reflect. Thanks for the support

Actually he crashed yesterday in the old Texan (WWII trainer) he was giving rides during a community festival and we think he lost an engine on takeoff. A lot of speculation right now though. The passenger (39) was killed as well. It's crazy cuz Curtis has given me 2 rides in the same T-6 that crashed. He was a great pilot and it is just shocking to see a 22 year old who has everything going for him die. https://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/10000959.htm

For all you military pilots out there. I was just wondering how common it is for you to have to deal with losing a friend to an airplane crash etc. I just lost a friend in a T-6 Texan crash and I am having a hard time with it. It has really made me start to question flying fighters in the Air Force. How often do you have to deal with aviation related death in the Air Force as a pilot? I just found out so I am thinking really off the wall thoughts but maybe I'll be over this soon. Thanks

Can anyone shed some light on the ABM selection process? Medical requirements, board dates, competitiveness??? I haven't heard much about ABM and was wondering what exactly they do other than chill in the back of the awac/jstar. What part of their job justifies the rated status they have? Deployment cycle? Length/location of ABM school? thanks

Metalhead, I'm all for a ROTC subset of baseops forum. I think there are far too many ROTC questions about flying or ROTC related issues. However, that doesn't mean you have to be such a prick about it. If it kills you so much to read all these posts non related to Metalhead, get a life and do something better with your time. Loose the arrogance too while you're at it.

Deweygcc, why nav? You mentioned you didn't even submit a pilot package. What about nav attracts you to the point where you go insane and don't even want to be a pilot?
-
Sorry I'm a little slow but where's the flying connection? Isn't that why we're all here?

Hacker, we train the member candidates 3 mornings a week. We put them under pressure and assign positions such as fc, deputy, stando, safety, guidon to the candidate flight. We teach them road guard procedures, how to march a flight. It also helps build their confidence so when they get to FT they aren't afraid to be FC. Also, they are responsible for all the FT warrior knowledge. We quiz them religiously at nightly meetings and verbally in the mornings. Pledging AAS was by far the best FT prep I have ever received. They have to pass a warrior knowledge test and a written national test. Also there are 2 mandatory briefings required. Birdie- I pledged Pershing Rifles too. I'd say AAS is plenty though. Although PR's is much more exciting. No offense but I'll choose a 21-gun salute any day over highway cleanup

AAS will help you a lot. Our Member Candidate Season prepares candidates for FT and helps them stand out in the Cadet Corps. Aside from that AAS carries strong political implications. At my detachment the majority of the wing commanders and group commanders are Arnold Air. Networking also goes a long way too. You get to know people and they get to know you. Bottom line: it will help you but you have to weigh out the pros and cons.

Thanks Major, I've been to that website but couldn't find any info on courses being offered at military installations. I'm actually a dependent and contract cadet in ROTC so I guess I could contact CHS wing safety and maybe get in a class down there. Safe ridin'
-
Does anyone have any information on the riding course that is required to drive on base? How much is it? I will be taking it at Charleston AFB and cannot find any information on class times and dates. Also, can you get your license if you present the card of completion to the DMV or do you still have to take the road test?
-
C17, I had a new development in my depth perception episode. Last week I went to Charleston Air Force base to re-take the circles test. As usual I failed it miserably and only got through line B like before. However, since I am a dependent they said I could get an appointment at optometry on base. The next day I went to optometry and had the full dp work up done. The doc threw every test he had at me (roughly 10 or so). At the end he said I had normal depth perception. I was relieved. Monday I will submit the paperwork to my det and go from there. I'll keep you posted. Thanks F16 for all your help. Keep pressing on C17 and see if you can beg someone to let you get an appt at optometry. They have all the tests and will give you the most thorough dp review. I struggled w/ the same thing and could not find civilians with all the tests. Good luck

While we're sort of on the topic.....is it hard to convert from fighter to heavy? What would it take? It seems like if you can fly the 38 and make it through fighters they wouldn't mind letting you cross train into a C-17 for the guard/reserves or even active.
-
Is landing the T-38 really that challenging? I heard that's what washes out the most guys in 38's.
